Cloverfield (2008)

The concept of the movie being shot as a "youtube" first person style was interesting, however too much was left unexplained ie the "monsters" and why people were exploding. Hopefully rumours of a sequel are untrue.

I gave it 1 star but only for 1 reason so they can make some money back on the film they wasted shooting it! absolute rubbish!!!!!!!!!!

Absolute garbage. Not only is the picture quality crappy because of the camcorder concept, there is absolutely no plot and no acting ability. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

I wished the DVD release gave us more, like other perspectives. It just seemed such a waste to produce such an awesome film and only let us see everything through a camcorder. JJ Abrams is quite the genius though, what he did with Star Trek is amazing and has converted many "non-Trekies".

not the best alien movie but if you like alien movies is def worth a watch

I expected to hate this but found it most enjoyable. Its a good fun old fashioned horror!

I normally love sci-fi/horror etc, but I found the charaters so inconvincing and irritating I had to fast-forward through the conversations, which did not leave much else.

As far as the story goes this is a fairly standard city under attack by gigantic monster movie. The only thing that makes it different is the hand held camera which from the start is annoying. Some nice touches but ultimately a bit daft.

I only got 15mins into this film before I started hitting the cue button. I never finished it. I found the hand held camera style of filming VERY annoying.

Not as good as expected, not really scary, out of time storyline.. (If thats what you could call it) One of those movies where you have to leave your brain in the next room.

I really enjoyed everything after the 17 minute mark. It was an excellent depiction of a home video. The odd occassion blatantly reminded me I was watching a film but overall I think it stayed true to its format. I loved the mix between teasing glimpses and graphic shots of the monsters. Overall I loved this film. I watched it twice which is a rarity.

This is a really likeable movie. I'd avoided it like the plague because of the hype but I'm glad I didn't miss it altogether. Seeing it on the small screen probably enhanced my liking of it as it is VERY shakey. On the big screen I'd probably have been sick half way through. However seeing this is a movie about a disaster, captured on video you really have to view it through the camcorder. There's no other way to do it. I pity the actor behind the camera though, you only see his 3 times, that's gotta be bad for his CV. Cloverfield is a geniune mouth dropper in some scenes and casting unknowns was a stroke of genius. It doesn't matter who they are, the total destruction of NY is what we came for. I really enjoyed it.

Unique movie from a first person perspective, quite gripping tension and action. You'll really enjoy it especially If you can put up with the constant movement of the camera but that's what adds to its uniqueness.

Very good movie, the acting gets you really involved with the people and you kind of struggle with them as the movie progresses; you feel their losses, triumphs and rushes as your own and is very interesting how a fiction "monster movie" can change when focused on the civilian's side instead of the military/hero point of view.

really really bad

this is the worst attempt at a godzilla/alien movie I have ever seen. What a complete waste of film. Not sure what the director was hoping for but the result was poor.

Very effective. Pleased to see it not have the typical Hollywood ending. If a monster was to invade a city, this may be what realistically happens. Liked seeing the statue of liberty's head roll down the street.

This movie is awesome! Don't let the concept of the "hand held" camera put you off. It adds to the thrill ride. And no music (outside of the party scenes) - it's all sound effects. This film rocks!

If I saw this on the big screen it would be good but unfortunetly I saw it on the small screen and it's not the same, the story was good about survival.

Fantastic watch. 911, king kong and Blair Witch comparisons aside this movie more than truly stands up on its own. Some very interesting subtext, good plot and believable characters keep this movie moving along at a good pace and make it extremely watchable Did I mention the special effects? I drooled. If you have ever been to the big apple then this adds another dimension to the movie and to the realism of the flick as you spot locations and start planning escape routes in your head. all in all an extremely entertaining flick

Different: The style of filming ( handheld videocam ) gave the feel of being inside the disaster and apart of the action and this thing was happening to you.

I was a bit apprahensive about seeing this movie as everyone was saying it was filmed like blair witch with the camera moving all around, But i must say I was plesantly surprised, really enjoyed this movie, recommend it to everyone

The hand held cam effect is essential in this subversive attack on US involvement in Iraq. Taking a bystander view the central characters are caught between a monster and misguided American military might. The more hits the beast takes only serve to spawn smaller more deadly offspring. It is on this level more than pure entertainment the merits of this movie lie.

I enjoyed the action sequences and thought they were pretty well done. I just can't believe that someone would be so keen to keep the video camera running as they fight off multiple beasties... As usual, a dumb cast that doesn't make very good choices. But the special effects were quite good.

Great suspense, thriller/horror movie. A bit like "Blair witch" as it's done in the style of a hand-held camera showing it "as it happens" - but works quite well.

Great Friday night flick!!! Cast give solid performances. Nice and short and just keeps you interested the whole way through. Any longer and the hand held camera would of got to me. 4 stars from me.

The storyline is reasonably interesting, but the characters are all idiots. This is what would happen if a monster invaded your major city and complete morons tried to get somewhere for a 'rescue' attempt. Can't recommend and the jerky camera work make the characters look even stupider.

Good movie, if you've seen the Blair Witch Project, then you know what to expect. but this movie has a lot more suspense and atmosphere. Very well done.

It is sad to see the devolution of the film industry in America encapsulated in this film, now lowered from the mediocre into the abysmal. Put in the vernacular: a load of old cobblers! If another director thinks of shooting a whole film with a jerky hand-held camera, a friend should think of reaching for a relvover.

I've never stopped watching a movie halfway before, so this is the first. If you like the watching a shaking camera throughout the movie, then this is the movie for you. If you're like me and get a headache from it, then don't watch this show!. I found it slow moving, hated the hand held camera effect, and gave up after 30 minutes when I realised the plot hadn't moved on yet.

Unexpectedly brilliant. Done in Blair Witch camera style but so much better! Well worth it.

Dont watch on a full stomach due to the shaky camera angles. Apart from that it was very enjoyable.

well what do i say about this. Dont try to watch it when your tired it just wont make sense. It is probably one of the worse movies i have endured. the camera work was terrible i understand the hand held but it made poor tv something i would have expected from a b grade movie. Even my kids had a hard time watching this movie and they are movie addicts. give it a go but dont get disappointed as it was a very hard watch.

This makes you realise,exactly what it would be like in real life,not Hollywood perfectly timed and filmed.I thought it was outstanding and so realistic from a day to day persons reaction to how you would really act.It makes you feel like your there. I could watch it over and over again.

At last, a truly frightening "monster" movie. A terrific surprise as I didn't know what to expect. See this one.

In the first 15 minutes I didn't even care that a giant monster was about to burst on screen because I was enjoying the amateur camera work, the characters and the setting. Then it was a nice rollercoaster ride of action and FX. It's like a 1st person version of The Host which I loved.

A hyped up movie that turned out to be a waste of time, but not that much time since it only goes for 70 minutes. Who makes a 70 minute movie ? The end was so abrupt, I was asking myself hangon is that it ? Nothing was finalised, it was almost like the last act was dropped from the film and they stuck 15 mins of credits in to fill it up. The only reason I'm glad I rented it is because it saved me money buying it. LOL.

I got this movie with very low expectations but it really surprised me. The footage is very shaky so if you've got a weak stomach then you should give it a miss. Otherwise, check it out

Not that great a movie. Only way you enjoy this movie is by coming into it with really low expectations or none at all, which wasn't the case for me. It's different but different is always better. It could have been so much better. Potential was there....

Excellent action/monster movie, taken from the point of view of one of the main characters with a handycam so it is jerky and obviously not filmed like a hollywood normal blockbuster but the effect makes the movie more thrilling. Definitely worth a look and very good.

Brilliant use of the central idea of characters employing a handheld movie camera, compared to, say, Vantage Point which was ordinary. Fine cast of young actors. A must see monster movie!

Godzilla + The OC = Cloverfield. Truly tacky plotline fused into what could have been a good monster movie. My eyes hurt from rolling them so much. Some really good action sequences secure a star though. If you are looking for a good monster movie with a good plot, grab The Host instead.

Horrible. Lame. Stupid. Cloverfield is pathetic. It is nothing more then a rip off of Godzilla and the Blair Witch Project, even the Decapitated Statue of Liberty head is a huge rip off of Escape from New York. Cloverfield is completely CLOVER-WOVEN from other great movies and put together to make this appaling movie. It is overrated and doesnt live up to the hype. Yet somehow people are taken in by its ability to rip off the documentary gimmick completely stolen from the Blair Witch Project and another giant monster attacking New York City (Yeah, because that hasnt been done before) This movie is filled with several continuity errors and massive plot holes and a magical camera which somehow holds battery power of twelve hours, and can survive being thrown around, helicopter crash's and of course, Nuclear explosions. It just goes to show what someone can do with a lack of talent and a camera. The most unoriginal boring piece of crap Ive seen in a long time. Dont beleive the hype.

Really cool, albeit shallow entertainment. Really exciting and a fun watch, a unique concept that would have been mind blowing if it wasn't for its predecessors (blair witch, cannibal holocaust etc).

This is my first review and I felt that I must do this after watching this "home video" Here are my thoughts: 1. Don't expect anything from this "home video" 2. You have to be physically fit to watch this movie because it made me very very dizzy as the screen is never stable. 3. There is neither logic nor explanation throughtout the movie. 4. I have never seen a movie worse than this. 5. It is totally sux.

I think I needed to watch this on the big screen, as it just came across as one of the most poorly filmed movies I have ever seen. I was looking forward to seeing this, maybe my expectations were too high? Parts were good, however the hand-held camera style of filming was a little confusing and nauseating at times.

Besides from the nauseating feeling of watching a whole movie through a hand-held camera, the most irritating aspect of this movie is the characters. Still worth a watch though.

One of the most intense movies I think I have ever seen. The impact may be lost on the small screen but watch it at night with the surround sound up.
