Wow, should be rated R18 just for the language... but hang in there - a GOOD film. Great acting and a story which could be used as "what not to do" in dating. Interesting play with the "typical male" role using women for sex, casual sex, flirtation, cheating, marriage... Nice exploration of alpha male posturing and some very well thought out scenes showing the deeper aspects of relationship dramas too. Watch for the London-sex internet cyber scene - classic funny. 4 stars.
An interesting vehicle for an actor with little audience appeal
" I cant take my eye's off of you" This movie is more powerful than your avg romance story with stand out performances from all. The perfect mix of sex, desire and the simple notion that one always wants what we don't have. When we do have it we still want more. More of what???
Faulty disc - couldn't even watch the movie. Made a report but yet to receive anything for it!
I wasn't sure I'd like this considering I usually feel a bit sickly when I see Julia Roberts in another romantic comedy post 80s but this was quite watchable. It is a romance movie that isn't too conventional and a bit murky up which I liked.
Not what we'd expect of a Julia Roberts movie - all good actors but not a good script. We watched it as there was nothing on TV, but I can see why other people could not go the distance.
It was unfortunate that yet again we received a movie that we couldn't watch. Too many stops and fracturing of the film. Very disappointing. it is getting to the stage that we are thinking of canceling our subscription. You never seem to refund for bad DVDs????? or send a new one.
This film was frustrating and annoying at times. The back and forth of the couples cheating on each other was dizzying. Clive Owens made my skin crawl and one particular scene of his character in a strip joint , crying and begging was the worst bit of acting I've ever seen! Cringe worthy!
This is a complicated love quartet played by 4 excellent actors. They make pretend love and have extreem rows.
I only watched the first 20 minutes if that. It was slow, boring and just not worth watching more. It is rare I do not finish a movie. Cast was promising but do not let yourself be fooled by that
OMG cant believe i bothered.
Interesting, neither liked or disliked it. Calibre of actors kept my attention.
What was Julia Roberts doing in this movie - just disgusting
this truly has to be one of the most totally boring, movies I've had the dis-pleasure of watching. I mean non of these characters could not keep their pants zipped for more then 5 mins. before they're bed hopping and stealing each others partners. Bit like tit for tat. I screwed your partner so you can screw mine mentallity!
The movie was ok. Not as good as I was expecting. The movie is about a love "square" involving four people and a lot of deceipt and unfaithfullness between the couples. I thought it was interesting that a movie so heavily involved around sex didnt actually feature any sex scenes. Natalie Portman was an interesting choice for the stripper character.
just could not get into this - shame as its a great cast but for me a real disappointment.
And so it goes.....Closer is not your average Julia Roberts Movie. Its full of sex, sexual conitations and vulgar language..having said that I think its a great movie and worthy of my 4 stars but if you do get offended by crass coments then dont watch it...the blowers daughter...Love that Damian Rice O song
Very Good. Probably Julia Robert's last good movie.
Engaging and interesting characters. I'm not sure it came together convincingly, but worth a look.
Excellent! well acted, good story, apt ending
Not quite my type of movie.
Was all over the place and at times a little slow to get going
I needed to watch it to the end, but I'm not sure I got the point. It's deep, but it isn't, if you know what I mean! Pretty rugged language, but that seems to be necessary for the complications of the relationship. The casting choice somehow made it more credible.
This is a clever movie. Much more than meets the eye. Very deep. All four lead actors are great - even Julia Roberts who I normally can't stand. Not for the romantics though. This is not a romantic movie (thank goodness).
Insert disc, press play, watch half then fast forward to see if anything actually happens, eject disc and send back asap.
Probably not to be watched with your elderly Mum (like I did!)The landuage is very raw in parts but may make you think about the choices you make with relationships!!
Oh GOD I was bored. Prententious, unbelievable and unlikeable tripe.
a bit boring my suit a teenager.
I found it to be slow moving with stilted and unrealistic dialogue.
Only if you're a Julia Roberts fan.
Poignant and realistic, this is as interesting as it is depressing in it's accurate portrayal of the darker side of relationships. A welcome change from fluffy, pointless rom-coms everywhere.
Was a little stranger than I expected and a bit coarser language wise, but still an enjoyable watch!
One of the very few films that I have not been able to force myself to see through until the end. Unbeleivably painful. Such talanted actors wasted on this peice of rubbish.
We really enjoyed it! Especially the internet chat scene at the beginning! LOL What a hoot! But yes... this is a movie about love/lust and trust and the dialogue is absolutely out of this world.
I teetered with this one. The good cast kept me watching, but I almost switched off many times. It didn't seem to be going anywhere and did not make you feel good. I wouldn't watch it again. The final scene just tipped it into the no 3 rating. Clean the language and it would be better to watch.
Clive Owen was fantastic as per usual... I won't try and hide the fact that I had serious issues with Natalie Portman.. Who in my opinion wasn't suited to the role at all... As well as Julia Roberts.. Surely there were better options.
I hated this, it was sex sex and more sex with a lot of dirty words and not much story
Not really enjoyed as very SLOOOW and not a lot happen, but if a fan of the stars would probably be worth watching.
Disapppointing, unbelievable characters, painful acting. Didn't care about any of them enough to enjoy the movie.
This is a confronting film, if you don't like your drama raw, then avoid! If you're up for it though, it's quite a ride. Great to see some big names getting their teeth into something gritty, it's obvious they relish the experience, and you will too!
Waste of time, couldnt watch it after first 30 mins I thought the talent might make it worth watching but dont bother
A story of truth and lies with lots of twists, not for the youngters with a lot of swearing in this one. A good plot and good acting that will keep you involved through to the end.
The movie was hard to follow and i'm not too sure they got their point across, whatever that was.
A cleverly written and well crafted film, exploring the intricacies of relationships, sex and betrayal.
Closer to what? Apart from some infidelities I can't remember much of this film...Maybe I fell asleep.
This is a movie I cannot really describe without sounding bland saying its queer and complicated something like love or wishing it was quadrangle.
Had me interested from start to finish.
This was excellent - great cast (although Julia Roberts was a bit wooden)and great script. Clive Owen was fantastic.
You can tell right away this movie was adapted from a play. All actors are good looking and the story is short and sweet.
I was expecting something better than this. Natalie Portman and Clive Owen were excellent, and Nat's character (Alice) was one of the better ones there. But seriously, the characters were SO self-absorbed and selfish, so always into considering only their own feelings, that I found it hard to warm to any of them. Definitely the sort of people you'd avoid at parties! The dialogue was stilted and stagey - top marks to the actors for somewhat overcoming this limitation. And I agree with the person who said it was difficult to believe the basic premise of the story.
There were two things I really liked. Alice's assertion that there was always a point when you could say 'yes' or 'no' to a relationship and the twist at the end (WARNING! plot spoiler here). The one character who seemed to have a shred of honesty about relationships was shown to have lived a lie. Intriguing.
interesting adaptation of a stage play. Clive Owen was outstanding but Natalie Portman seemed a bit out of here depth as did Jude Law. I'd love to see it on stage where the style of delivery which seemed so weird in this ENGLISH movie would probably be better suited
Good movie, good actors, the ending wasn't as i expected, which is always a good thing.
I'm surprised to see Julia Roberts in this film. The language was pretty atrocious. I did watch it to the end but it wasn't one of the better ones. I guess the acting was pretty good but the story left a lot to be desired.
A really quite depressing look at human nature when it comes to love and lust. It's a horrible movie but like a car crash you can't help but watch as these people tear each other apart. Very well cast and totally engrossing for a movie that fundamentally only has four characters. Definitely worth watching but maybe not if you are into romances.
Not my scene. The actors are good looking but as happens often with American movies, I find them as expressive as cardboard cutouts.
Not a movie to watch if you are feeling glum but excellent acting and keeps you interested to see how the characters deal with infidelity.
Fantastic screenplay, direction & brilliant performances by the 4 stars. Don't miss it!
