In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. If he is to save the life of the beautiful Princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), the valiant Perseus must lead a team of intrepid warriors on a quest to battle a host of powerful, beastly enemies.

I should have known better than to look forward to Clash of the Titans, a film that unironically employs the tagline ‘Titans Will Clash’. I can only assume the same amount of time and energy that went into writing that snappy little pitch was also spent on the film’s script. Now, it’s one thing that the film fails to deliver any interesting characters or any narrative innovations. That’s to be expected. But director Louis Letterier and screenwriters Travis Beacham, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (yes, I’m naming names) can’t even deliver on the promise of the film’s title. At no point in this film do titans clash. Spoiler alert, I guess. Recounting the film’s plot will help no one, but I’m a sucker for tradition.

It stars Sam Worthington (who is fast becoming the most inexplicable movie superstar ever) as Perseus, a demi-God living among the mortals. You see, in this universe, there are actual Gods who watch over our every move. Zeus (Liam Neeson), the father of all men, is powered by the prayers and adoration of his children. When the people begin to curse Zeus for not providing them with wealth (or whatever), he gets a little testy. He employs his brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) to teach his minions a lesson: worship the Gods or get ready for a smackdown, Old Testament style.

So let’s stop for a second and work this out. I have no problem with the fantasy of several Gods literally sitting atop the clouds and watching everything we do. Hey, for all I know, that is actually going on. But here is my problem: In a universe where the existence of Gods is fact, and the open cursing of one leads to instant violent retaliation of horrifying proportions, why would anyone curse them? If I were a fisherman, and there had been a shortage of fish, I would probably want to question the Gods about their seeming desire to make my life miserable too. But if I knew that that question would lead to my instant electrocution and death, I would probably keep stumm.

Anyway, Hades kills a bunch of people, Perseus’ family included. Following much wailing and gnashing of teeth, Perseus teams up with a bunch of other poorly defined characters (I think they were soldiers) to stop the Gods from unleashing the most horrifying beast imaginable - the Kraken - upon the rest of the heathens. Yes, Zeus himself, the jilted ex-lover of man, specifically instructs Hades to unleash said Kraken. So this is a story in which God is willing to scare people into praying to him, instead of letting his creations enjoy the free will which he originally bestowed. Therefore, can we assume that Clash of the Titans is an atheist manifesto, painting God (of whichever denomination) as some spurned cuckold out for revenge? Does the film encourage men and women to free themselves from the shackles of organised religion to live out their mortal existence feeling empowered? Well, no, because this film isn’t about anything.

Sure, I can rattle off the film’s plot and list the famous characters from Greek mythology that feature in it. But it’s all for naught. This picture has no weight. There are themes, I think, but they’re muddled and incomprehensible. There are certainly no characters. Sam Worthington, perhaps also betrayed by a weak script, does nothing but glare. His battle speeches are neither rousing nor particularly intelligible. Ralph Fiennes simply trots out his Voldemort shtick for Hades (although he employs a nice Batman-rasp) and Liam Neeson, ideal casting for Zeus, is also confused as to what the motives of his character are supposed to be. Even a film like 300 - which prioritised character development behind slow motion decapitations and rampant homoeroticism - even that film had some characters to grab onto. Clash of the Titans can’t even muster that much, assuming that famous names such as Hades or Andromeda or Perseus inform the audience enough about who these characters are and what they want. Well they don’t. And now you have a bunch of motiveless characters with stupid names. When they die (and many characters do), it's difficult to care.

I asked whether Clash of the Titans is an atheist manifesto, but how can any film that openly accepts the existence of Gods be atheist? Yes, I know, this is a dumb action fantasy. But dammit, I’ll read into things as deeply as I please. And frankly, considering the lack of action sequences to distract me, I had to find something to keep me awake. I was left grasping at the multiple theological conundrums posed (and almost immediately dropped) by the film. I can only conclude that the film is completely unaware of the gravity (and bottomless potential) of exploring these subjects. Instead, Clash of the Titans is the cinematic equivalent of a fart. It’s loud, it stinks, it’s completely devoid of substance and thanks to the wonders of 3D, it is actively, physically annoying.

1.5/5

I'm not a fan of remakes, and wasn't expecting much. But overall it was enjoyable. No clockwork owl though was very disappointing.

I am a Greek Mythology Major and the inaccuracies even though they were not a lot (as compared to some movies) it still really bothered me. It was a slow paced film for me too

I really enjoyed this movie. The sequel is garbage but this was really good. The story line is not the greatest, but good if you are interested in greek mythology.

Was something enjoyable too much to ask for? This film is empty. Dull performances, weak script and it relies on effects that are pretty bad anyway. Just don't bother with this.

Another movie shot in the dark! I don't suppose cinematographers stop and think about the much smaller screens we all use at home! I would be able to give a review if I'd been able to see it ... but it sounded pretty stupid.

It's a good action movie with some excellent special effects. I liked seeing all the mythical creatures and characters. From the title you can expect it's not a deep and meaningful movie, so don't expect it to be! :)

Really not the best action film I've seen. it was cut short to me? the film was too short to even remember ANY of the other characters names? so if they died? I don't even remember; it's supposed to make you feel like they'll be sadly missed? but it didn't spend any time at all getting to know these characters? or finding a way to convince us to feel like they'd be sorely missed? Action good but Storyline was disappointing.

Very Good Special effects ... otherwise just the same old Greek Mythology Story. They could have done more with Hades, his character was under-used and his ending left no closure.

Good special effects, which a movie like this must have. Sam Worthington, good lead but if I shut my eyes sounds almost like Russel Crowe. Other leads well chosen , story of creation by the gods explained at beginning, almost storytale in manner, which was a good lead into the film. Any movie with Liam Neison and Ralph Fiennes together has to be a winner.

Well, as much as I hate to say it, Sam was a bit wooden, wasn't he? But the other actors held up their end and the visuals were great. There were a few shaky bits of script and ideas that just didn't quite work. I hated the Gods' armour. (Reminded me, horrifically, of Excalibur.) This movie wasn't bad, but it just didn't quite gel.

I dont know the Greek mythology this was based on, so I dont know if they stuck to the story. I just judge this as a movie without looking at truth or fiction... This was a good story about a reluctant hero, with plenty of very good sword fighting, the special effects were excellent, Pegasus was very realistic (I know horses) Medusa was very well done... There was no over dramatising.... So: good (albeit bit short) story line, good fights, excellent special effects.... Definitly recommend this movie !

Special effects much better than the clat animation of the original, but in all other ways this was inferior. I mean Liam Neeson as Zeus?? Story? there was no story, this was just a series of battles placed one after the other.

this movie was ok , but took a long time to reach a conclsuion. I suppose these begining of time movies always do , and all the cameo roles made it difficult to keep up with who was who amongst the gods . Still worth the watch on a Saturday night.

I don't know why they couldn't stick to the actual myth so that the film would be educational instead of just an excuse to watch people fight monsters with swords (though I enjoy a good monster fight much as the next gal). It was also a little disapointing that almost nothing is seen of the other gods besides Zeus and Hades and that the ending (slight spoiler) gives the impression that you could defy the gods without any consequences. The giant scorpions and the kraken are pretty cool, though.

Terrible. Not even the special effects hold this one together - Worthington does not work as this character - the direction must have been equally poor. What could have been a stunning epic was instead a miscellaneous hodgepodge of mythological concepts - which made little sense all crammed in together. Absence of a cohesive plot, interesting characters and any sort of respectable diaglogue make this one of the worst 'films' of the year.

While not closely resembling the original classic, I still found this to be an enjoyable film. Fun action, good effects, interesting characters and all wrapped in a classic story. Only real downside was Sam's thick Aussie accent but that's really no worse than the dozens of varied period films crammed full of bad English accents because no one bothers to try for whatever the real one should be.
