Slow and dull. I only kept watching to see which way the ending would go. Very disappointed. The acting was fine but there was nothing new in the plot. Being based on a true story doesn't make it good. Don't waste your time.

John Travolta is cold and tough but heartfelt too in this courtroom drama that makes one think about corporate society. Are the big companies ruling our lives and should we fight back. Based on a true story Civil Action is essential viewing.

I am pleased to see that other Quickflixers like this film. For some reason it has a worse reputation than it deserves, probably because of the muted ending which may come unexpected after a long buildup. It tells the story of a lawyer (Travolta) who starts a case as a reasonable gamble for the money but along the way finds a more genuine inspiration, which leads his firm to bankruptcy. If you can swallow the American melodrama and sit through the somewhat lengthy second act, you'll get an exciting look into a character questioning the reasons why he is doing the job he is doing. And aren't we all at some point... Splendid acting talent galore: William H. Macy, James Gandolfini, John Lithgow, Stephen Fry and a brief appearance of Kathy Bates.

Brilliantly realised dramatisation of a real case. Cleverly condensed so that the dull legalities become dramatic counterpoints.
