Vince Rizzo (Andy Garcia), a family man who makes his living as a corrections officer, longs to become an actor. Ashamed to admit his aspirations to his family, Vince would rather let his fiery wife Joyce (Julianna Margulies) believe his weekly poker games are a cover for an extramarital affair than admit he's secretly taking acting classes in Manhattan. When Vince is asked to reveal his biggest secret in class, he inadvertently sets off a chaotic chain of events that turns his mundane suburban life upside down.

A good cast in this movie but the storyline was a bit too dramatic for my liking.

Don't know how this one escaped more notice. Very quirky and entertaining and so amusing with all the family foibles and everyone keeping secrets that make them feel inadequate. The son, with his penchant for large women and watching them eat, is probably the standout understated performance here. Garcia and Margolies are at their best in these non-mainstream roles. City Island is a real place and it looks really rather idyllic.

A great little movie with touching characters, simple storyline, great dialogues and acting. A real surprise to see Garcia in an average Jo kind of roles and it suits him well. Had great fun watching this.

An entertaining movie about tangled webs and avoiding telling the truth. Andy Garcia is excellent. City Island looks like a great place to visit if I ever get to NY.

I thought at first this was going to be yet another over-wrought, schmaltzy Yank film... but even after only 15 mins it becomes watchable... right to the end!

Not a worldbeater but deserrves a look. Not as cheesy as a lot of yank rubbish in similar vein with generally tight acting. Enjoyable. Barely heard at the box office but deserves better than some that made it. Love eat Pray for example.

This is a refreshingly good film and well worth persevering through the initial feelings of doubt and questions regarding the 'tacky' nature of the characters. It all resolves beautifully and in fact has a great deal of moral merit.

Not as good as I was expecting. A bit like a French comedy - fairly contrived and ultimately not all that funny. Some strands of the plot were likeable (Andy Garcia's bits) but others were lame (fat girls and their feeders - pur-lease!). And what was with that not-quite-Audrey Hepburn character? Still, it was interesting to see a different part of Brooklyn... 2.5 stars from me. But hey, I got this because uncle loved it, raved about it so you may like it. And hey, it was a darn sight better than Little Fockers - now there's a dud film!

An enjoyable and quirky story which builds to a great finale. The casting and acting are excellent. You will need to stick with the film to get the most from this story.

I absolutely loved this delightfully quirky little gem, it is so off-beat and non-mainstream. Great performances all round and a special nod to the very handsome young actor Steven Strait, who can not only act beautifully (compare his character in the movie with Steven himself in the DVD extras roundtable discussion, hard to believe it's the same guy) but is serious eye candy - phew! The movie's climax is hysterically funny, haven't laughed so much in ages.

3 + a good nights enjoyment. Offbeat comedy about a dysfunctional family that live on city Island. Slow build up but amusing enough. We need the subtitles to help understand the broad Bronx accent and all the yelling. The son's character was lacking and didn't go anywhere and the girlfriends exit was a bit abrupt. Overall a comedy that kept you entertained. Recommended

The Rizzos, a family who doesn't share their habits, aspirations, and careers with one another, find their delicate web of lies disturbed by the arrival of a young ex-con (Strait) brought home by Vince (Garcia), the patriarch of the family, who is a corrections officer in real life, and a hopeful actor in private. Slow paced and tedious.

I think everyone expects Andy Garcia to be in something a bit more gangster. Look, this isn't a bad movie. Feels a bit B grade at times but you get the message they're trying to get across.

Not to be taken too seriously, but seriously acted for laughs. Accepting it as a comedy rather than a realistic story, it's one of the better ones, and some of the unrealistic and ridiculous situations can be forgiven.
