Director: Orson Welles
Actors: Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Agnes Moorehead, Paul Stewart, Ray Collins, Everett Sloane, George Coulouris, Erskine Sanford, Ruth Warrick, William Alland, Dorothy Comingore

Orson Welles reinvented movies at the age of 26 with this audacious biography of newspaper baron Charles Foster Kane (in essence, a thinly veiled portrait of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst), who rises from poverty to become one of America's most influential men. A complex and technically stunning film, Citizen Kane is considered one of the best movies ever made.

Intreresting to see how the technique of acting has changed over the decades. It is a bit challenging to get into it at the start, but if you stick with it you can see why it is ranked as such a great movie.

Not the best movie ever made. I was very disappointed in this film, also there was a bit of damage here and there to the DVD, some jumping, freezing, etc.

An incredible film - worth watching with the separate commentaries by film critic Roger Ebert and a well known director (whose name escapes me right now LOL) who knew Orson Welles near the end of his life. You find out all kinds of fascinating facts and insights from the movie. Well worth seeing - even if you have seen CK before.

Although I know this is very highly regarded, I remembered it be a bit dull. But it is better than I remembered. Really quite enjoyable, as well as well made. And I learnt that the White Stripes song "The Union Forever" is some kind of homage to Charles Foster Kane. Huh!

A truly magnificent classic, very long and it did not matter. Black and white only added to it's magic and this film was a real trail-blazer! Few films have come close in it's drama and scope. Thoroughly enjoyed it! In the credits, they mentioned 'newcomers' such as Joseph Cotton and Agnes Moorehead!

Widely recognised as a classic. Welles was 26 when he made this film. That alone makes this an amazing achievement.

Great cinematography. However, none of the characters are likeable and it's just a good film - not an amazing one.

A little slow and awkward by today's standards, but still a classic. Orson Welles's performance is very captivating. It's also interesting to see the origins of so many cinematic conventions we now take for granted, like montages, low-angle shots, etc. Bonus Features include commentaries, featurettes, and a ton of production pictures. Very interesting look into a piece of Hollywood history.

Stunning. Simply brilliant. Beautiful photography. Funny. Great performances. Deserving of every accolade it's received since 1941. Can't believe I waited 33 years to see it.

Ever feel like you SHOULD be enjoying a movie that everyone raves about but you just don't get what is so good about it? This was my experience with Citizen Kane. I mean, the whole idea that this is about Hurst is so obvious tot he point where this is a thinly veiled biography. That said, the acting and cinemotography are second to none. The staging and execution of the scene where Kane rips apart that room was potent stuff.

Clearly this film was groundbreaking and a masterpiece for its time. However, the label of "One of the Best Films Ever Made" which has consistently been applied to this film since the 1940s is no longer accurate. Filmmakers have created far better masterpieces in the meantime. This film no longer lives up to the hype. Reviewers who rate each film based on its quality relative to others of its time will rate this highly, as Citizen Kane clearly stands out with this set of criteria. Those reviewing it against contemporary films will rate it more poorly.

Once you recover from being assaulted by the histrionic 1940s soundtrack, and start appreciating this movie like you might classic literature or very expensive wine, you'll begin to understand why it is consistently rated best of all time. You've really got to take the time to notice just how it has been put together. Oh, and Orson Welles has the greatest scowl of all time, as well.

Unashamedly the story of William Randolph Hearst, this 1941 movie by Orson Welles made history and a lot of lawsuits. It's content and portrayal of the great publishing baron was such that attempts were made to have it banned. Nowadays it is listed by the American Film Institute, and other groups, as one of the 'Best American Movies' of all time. Every serious movie buff and collector would have this movie in their collection. Why ? Besides the contentious subject matter, Orson Welles shows his brilliance (nay, genius) in direction, camera angles, lighting, scripting and production. This is a movie that film makers use as a model, a datum point, an example of how to do it. There is an accompanying bonus disc somewhere (check to see if it's included) which itself won an Oscar in 1995 for Best Documentary. The two disc package represents excellent value and truly is a collectors delight. Otherwise, just grab 'Kane' for your library.

Another viewing of a classic movie. The script is tight, and the technical dexterity is excellent. A fascinating movie from beginning to end

This movie is an absolute bore to watch. I only got it because of all the "greatest film ever made' garbage I heard about it. I couldn't wait for it to end and anyone who reckons this is any good is afraid of being looked upon as someone who didn't grasp the content, emotion, and direction of this film. What a joke, do not bother unless you like boring old B&W films.

Does it live up to the hype? Though it is difficult to appreciate the impact this movie had on cinema, it is clearly the work of a fine auteur. Great viewing.

Not to be missed if you like classic old B&W movies. I don't know if the vision has been cleaned up or enhansed but it is very clear.

Wow, this film really lived up to all that is said about it. It was worth watching the other two versions on the dvd with commentaries by famous directors. Orson Wells was truly a very talented man.

Quite possibly the most amazing film i've ever seen. Watching this flm reminded me of why I love cinema. The framing, the direction, the script, acting, but most of all the scope, of Kane are mind blowing. Only after watching this cinema masterpiece can you recognise all the ways others have imitated it since. It is possibly fitting that Welles never made another film, as i doubt he could ever have surpassed this truly mindblowing work of art. I guess what i saw as the message is that once we are gone, we are only known through the minds of others. And perhaps that is as it should be. Watch This Film!
