Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) has spent his entire life right were he was born: St. Cloud's orphanage. Here with the unconventional but loving tutelage of Dr Wilbur Larch (1999 Academy Award winner, Michael Caine), Homer has flourished. His life has been simple, innocent and fulfilling. Yet now, as he approaches manhood, Homer yearns to explore the world for himself.

This is a story about a boy who grows up in an orphange and then leaves to see the world. There are two underlying themes: his growing up; and that there are always rules set down for us by someone else. The film explores the issue of when is it ok to break them. Slick and well filmed drama with a heart, although a bit syruppy at times. It is an accurate adaptation of the book.

As remakes go...this was disappointing. You would think that with the new technology available that there would have been something new and exciting added to this film, there wasn't. For anyone who doesn't know the original though.. a good film.

After reading all the reviews I must say my wife and I were very disappointed. It was well made, well acted, but just really didnt seem to go anywhere, have any point and had an extremely predictable ending. Sorry guys, just don't understand the hype.

So many things 'wrong' with this movie yet it get's nominated for an Oscar. I don't know how the minds of the Academy members work. They must all be over the age of 80. If you agree with abortion, cheating, selfishness, incest/rape and enjoy watching Toby Maguire then this is the movie for you. How this guy gets roles is beyond me. Enjoy.

On one level this fil is about the silly rules set by the owners of the apple orchard and the cider house of the title. But it is also about the ongoing debate of the rules people try to impose on a woman's right to decide between termination or birth. Then there is Dr Larch (Michael Caine) tring to impose his rules on the future of the young man he has brought up (Tobey Maguire). The film shows that all people ultimately have to make their own moral choices about their future life. Michael Caine is excellent but Tobey Maguire as the young man is less convincing.

Worth watching if you are in the mood for some light sentimental entertainment. An unusual casting for Michael Caine but it suits him well. Here he is more in character than his usual 'Michael Caine' self.
