Director: Josh Trank
Actors: Michael B. Jordan, Dane Dehaan, Michael Kelly, Anna Wood, Alex Russell

New technologies and social communities allow us to record, post and comment on every second of our lives, sharing our every emotion and opinion with the world, no matter how mundane. For three high school classmates who suddenly gain superpowers from a mysterious substance, the chronicle of their ordinary lives is about to take on extraordinary turn. Initially they use their powers to play innocent pranks on each other and people around them, but soon they gain confidence and learn to control their powers better to take on more difficult tasks. Their newfound sense of immortality and impunity will force them to evaluate their own morality to ultimately decide where to draw the line about how far they should go.

No one man should have all that power
by Simon Miraudo,

There's plenty to like about Chronicle - the latest in a long line of found-footage flicks to pour through the floodgates since Cloverfield smashed the Statue of Liberty's head through it - but this seems to be a case where the medium obscures the message (or better yet, annoys us to the point where we no longer care what the message even is). Director Josh Trank makes his feature film debut with this tale of three teenage boys who are mysteriously charged with awe-inspiring powers. Handily, the most emotionally unstable of the boys had already developed a habit of obsessively recording his inane high school life on camera. Though his newfound telekinesis and flying abilities offer far more interesting material than, say, him just eating lunch, the footage - and the film in general - still...

Though his newfound telekinesis and flying abilities offer far more interesting material than, say, him just eating lunch, the footage - and the film in general - still suffers from a certain vapidness. Like all YouTube videos featuring self-documenting narcissists, it begs for your attention, but doesn't offer all that much in return.

The aforementioned unstable boy is Andrew (Dane DeHaan), and he ostensibly purchases a camera to tape his drunk dad's violent outbursts, and, as is not-so-astutely pointed out later, to act as a barrier between him and the world. Shy, and pretty weird (did we mention he's carrying a camera everywhere?), his sort-of-cool cousin Matt (Alex Russell) doesn't even want to be seen with him in public. They begrudgingly attend a barn party together, where Mr. Popularity, Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan), asks Andrew to bring his mechanical appendage to the site of a strange cave in the middle of a field. The trio travels down into the abyss, discover something alien looking... and the next time we see them, they're practicing their newfound super-talents in the backyard. The boys quickly tire of making lego blocks float, and decide to start pranking lame, non-powerful civilians (moving cars from one parking space to another with their mind, etc.). Matt and Steve are content to have these nifty tricks up their sleeve, but Andrew - revealed to be the strongest and most disturbed of the three - starts calling himself an 'apex predator' and seeks to right the wrongs in his world.

Audiences have accepted the concept of amateur documentarians being willing and able to record alien invasions, apartment-block viral outbreaks, and even exorcisms gone terribly wrong. Chronicle might stretch their credulity to breaking point, however. Not because its subject matter is ridiculous - Max Landis' screenplay is grounded and thoughtful, if a little bland - but because it works so hard to wedge a handheld camera into every scene. To the point of absurdity, even. For example, there are a lot of instances where someone has presumably set up a tripod to film an argument, and occasionally characters will point handycams at one another while having a regular conversation. Trank's approach to the traditional superhero origin is novel; if only the way in which the story was told didn't keep distracting us from the story itself.

Despite these criticisms, Chronicle is mostly an enjoyable ride. A fair few sequences verge on exhilarating, particularly when Andrew, Matt and Steve soar through the skies (camera in tow, of course). There are plenty of surprises littered throughout the picture, and it all builds to a spectacularly engrossing finale in the streets of Seattle. Trank and Landis treat comic-book tropes seriously and reverently, even if their depiction of high school life is fairly out-of-touch. And though it might be lacking in character, Chronicle is, at the very least, a decent variation on old superhero mythology, and pays off far better than Season One of Heroes - which is really all we could have asked for.

3/5

Great story, terrifying. Sort of a cross between Akira and Megamind, but live action. Loved it, would happily watch it again. Clever recording method also.

I didn't particularly like the storyline of this film- it didn't really have much of a storyline to be honest but the effects made up for it. It was easy watching & pretty clever & fascinating to watch.

this movie wasn't bad - a great idea and and really shows how people can become corrupted by power. it wasn't all nicely wrapped up in the end, which was good. Reading some of the reviews here, I get the feeling that some people missed the point of the movie.

Rubbish movie that raises questions as to why & by whom it was made.

A lot better than most of these reviews show; yes, it is "different". Once I adjusted to that; that it was "found footage" and was low-key, realistic and a well acted thought provoking teen drama and not the same old mindless big budget blockbuster, I really enjoyed it.

If you like watching three dickheads with various social issues filming themselves on their journey towards self-destruction then this is the film for you.

This started out really well I thought, something a bit different, and with lots of promise, but got a bit bogged down with special effects by half way through. The hand held camera affect got on my nerves a bit also, especially by the end. An OK movie, but wouldn't rave about it.

Couldn't finish watching the film as I found it completely boring and the use of shaky hand held camera really annoying.

I didn't think I would like this movie but I was quite surprised as by the end of it I was hooked and couldn't turn away, sitting on edge with my mouth open. It is a bit of a teen movie but I still enjoyed it

Cool idea for a film visually, but the 3 teenage guys its based on were such dickheads and unlikeable characters they were just super irritating to watch. That and the way the camera angles were shot were like a hand held video camera, which is dizzying at times and, again, annoying!

This was 'ok'. I'm not sure it scrape's through as a superhero movie because the guys with powers aren't really heroic in the iconic sense and dont actually help uphold law etc. I couldn't really get past the reality that they were simply hanging from hidden wires though.... besides that it was 'ok'

I really enjoyed this movie. At first I thought I wasn't going to like it. It is done like a reality movie of a boy using a video camera to video everything and then it gets really good. I found it facinating and imagined if someone got these gifts that this could really happen.

Good film. A nice new twist on the superhero formula. The found-footage angle was a great addition, adding shock to some scenes and giving the viewer the feeling that they won't know what's going to happen next. The actors are good and the action scenes have so much more pop and impact because of the handheld vibe. Felt somewhat unsatisfied with the ending however.

Unwatchable because of the self made feel about it ... Think it may have been ok if it wasn't made from a homemade perspective .... Only watched 10 minutes then gave up

I thought this was a really good movie. After reading Quickflix reviews and a couple of the others I thought it might not be so good, but was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was done so well. It gives a wonderful insight into how as humans, we are not ready for that kind of power. Andrew's descent into total madness was really well done. A few people complained about him having a camera all the time, but the explanation of how he could manipulate it and that fact that he was mad gave it credence. I like the fact that it wasn't all flawless filming; it added a slight touch of reality to it.

Likes the way this was 'filmed' not as a movie but one of the boys filming everything on his handheld camera. Some great footage and thought for a sci-fi movie it followed an interesting storyline well

A found footage kind of film, but still feels fresh. Strong characters. Very real life issues impacting on a pop corn movie theme turn this film into something a little bit more than the usual fare.

Not bad but the handheld camera filming was in my opinion a bad idea because it looks sometimes like it was too much. As if they always have a camera even in the worst situations then the use of security camera towards the end... Way over the top!

I got to see this one in theaters. Chronicle is an interesting new take on both the 'found footage' and superhero genres. It succeeds highly in both ways however does come off as a bit of a teenager's movie. Nonetheless, I recommend it.
