MEDIUM LEVEL VIOLENCE

Director: Andrew Dominik
Actors: David Field, Eric Bana, Simon Lyndon, Daniel Wyllie, Bill Young

Chopper (ERIC BANA) is Mark "Chopper" Read, real-life convict and best-selling author of How to Shoot Friends and Influence People. His story is frightening, savagely funny and twisted. The son of a devoutly religious mother and a one-time soldier with a fondness for sleeping alongside a loaded gun, Chopper dreams of making a name for himself as a legendary crime figure. His journey starts out as a wisecracking criminal failure, inside a maximum-security prison, but he manages to twist his life into a fascinating and wickedly funny take that the press and the public can't get enough of it.

A good movie. Eric Bana was excellent. The movie froze in the middle so missed a bit. It wasn't as good as the reviews indicated.

Eric Bana is unrecognisable in this film! His portrayal of Chopper signalled his arrival as a main contender on the big screen; he is now one of Australia's finest actors. Not a movie for the faint hearted though!

Gruesome in it's cruelity and aggression. Wonderful acting of a truly tortured soul. Funny in parts, but violence . Very, good! Did Eric Bana get an award? He deserved it!

Chopper was a really down to earth movie. I think the acting was superb and because it actually stuck to the truth, it was pretty confronting. Chopper is really a psychopath and it shows up well with his lack of feelings about blowing people away.

The problem with chopper and most such underworld films is that it is filled with all sorts of blockie things which the real world fail to undertsand or like.

Good movie. Great acting from Eric Bana. Don't expect a documentary style nor a great insight into Mark Read's life, but do expect a good movie.

Weird but captivating, like watching a train wreck - with probably about as much gore.

Who says crime doesn't pay...Notoriety, movie, books. The infamous Chopper Reid is our modern day Ned Kelly. He is mimicked extremely well by Eric Bana in this film. You must see it!

A truly remarkable film, this dark, gritty, violent and very gruesome portrayal of "Chopper" Read was just pipped at the post for the AFI Best Film by the universally loved "Looking for Alibrandi": a surprise, considering the previous three winners had all been thrillers: "Two Hands" (1999), "The Interview" (1998) and "Kiss or Kill" (1997). But a stunning Bana still walked away with the trophy for Best Actor in a dramatic career change that saw him take two years off after his light comedic roles in "Full Frontal", "Eric" and "The Castle". His portrayal of the hitman is so visually accurate it is easy to forget that he is, in fact, acting, and it was enough to win him a passport to Hollywood, where he would star in the likes of "Black Hawk Down" and "Munich". It's not a film for the feint-hearted: if you don't like the sound of seeing ears ripped off and inmates being stabbed to death by small pointy objects, steer clear of this one! For everyone with a slightly steelier stomach, though, it's a must-see re-enactment of a scummy life set against a backdrop of gritty Melbourne and Pentridge in the 1970s and 80s.

Despite all of the hype, and praise for Eric Bana's performance, I found "Chopper" ugly, over-violent, and blood-filled. No doubt this represents a slice of life, but one that I can readily give a miss.

Just in case you thought good and evil were clear cut, we have this film. Here is a brutal murderer with a sense of fun and a kind heart. I challenge you to not feel some affinity for him.

Chopper the movie was based on the books that Mark Brandon Read wrote himself. The movie was not entirely faithful, but it caught Chopper's spirit as well as any film version could. Eric Bana is extremely convincing as the homicidal, devious but strangely sensitive criminal. An excellent movie, but not for the weak of stomach.

This is without doubt one of the best Australian films ever made. Dark, funny and done with a gritty fluid style that shifts in tone from scene to scene. The DVD features two seperate commentries, one from the director Andrew Dominik (said to be in Hollywood producing 'The Demolished Man') and the other from Chopper Reid himself who reveals he is more of a larger than life charcter than the one played in the actual film. Vince Colosimo is unforgetable as Nevil 'i'm flying mate' Bartos, a western suburbs small time criminal who Chopper shoots in the stomach and then drives to the hospital. A truely original and startling piece of work, this is everything I love and cherish about Australian cinema. A film that defecates all over the 1000 or so badly scripted comedies and teenage coming of age flicks we seem to keep on churning out with alarming regularity. Speaking of which, Eric Bana, who's career exploded after he made this film actualy came back from Hollywood to help lay some cable for Australia by making 'The Nugget' one of the most god awful comedies ever to have tax payers money thrown at it. Chopper is and probably always will be Bana's crowning glory and a film I am sure he and his manager will always be greatful for. I know I am.

Silly movie about the life of a mischevious criminal who becomes famous. Although, Eric's acting was convincing and hilarious in some scenes.
