Director: Michael Davie

Shot over six years 'The Choir' is the true story of Jabulani Shabangu and a group of fellow inmates battling to survive in South Africa's biggest prison. Jabulani is rebellious and angry until he meets a wily old bank robber named Coleman, who recruits him for the prison choir. Jabulani rises in the ranks and leads the inmates to an extraordinary performance at the National Prisoner Choir Competition. But there's more at stake than a contest to see who sings best. The brotherhoods of choristers, with Coleman's fatherly guidance, have the power to transfer Jabulani's life and give him the courage to face his victims and survive in the world outside- if only he can overcome the violence and the heartbreak of his past.

Makes you think about a subject most of us never would in any great depth. Interesting.

An excellent, moving film. The singing was beautiful, wonderful harmonies and the story interesting and well-acted.

Outstanding, at times confronting but, ultimately uplifting documentary about the inspirational leader of a choir in a Johannesburg prison. This is one of the best docos I have seen. I loved it.
