It is turn of the century in Belle Epoque Paris and a scandalous romp is underfoot. The sensational tale begins as the ravishing Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer) contemplates retirement from her renowned stature as Paris's most envied seductress to the rich and famous. Her plans are cut short when she is approached by a former courtesan and arch rival, the barb-throwing gossip Charlotte Peloux (Kathy Bates), who encourages Lea to teach her disaffected 19 year-old son - a bon vivant nicknamed "Chéri" (Rupert Friend) - a thing or two about women. The resulting escapades involve power struggles over sex, money, age and society - and unexpectedly, love itself - as a boy who refuses to grow up collides with a woman who realizes she cannot stay young forever.

Anita Pallenberg is a standout as the opium queen. This film is just so beautiful to look at. Gorgeous.

Mmmm... I think it was ok for a rainy day and you want to watch a love story where there's very nice dresses. A movie for the ladies.

This film turned out to be terribly boring. It would seem that it was a vehicle to show that Michelle Pfeiffer is still a beautiful woman and not much else.

Michelle Pfeiffer plays a langorous and vapid old tart who has been lucky or shrewd enough to con her rich lovers into parting with enough expensive gifts of jewellery, cash and sound stock market tips tomake her into a rich and idle woman. She embarks upon a long affair with her rival's effete, dandified son, Cheri, but makes the mistake of falling for him...oh dear, so what and serve her right. Frightful, intrusive narration, too.

Bit slow to start I agree but got better. I did not mind the voice over . I disagree re the French perspective. 3

Lavish production, impeccably staged... but in the end unsatisfactory and tedious... Michelle Pfeiffer carries her role very well - little though can be said of the rest of the cast, especially the tiresome Kathy Bates.

A love story with originality. Starts slow at first, appearing wooden and pantomime, with Kathy Bates and Michelle Pfeiffer coming across as much too American for this well shot and costumed period piece. Before long this movie gains momentum and depth. Worthwhile at 3.5 to 4 stars!

What a complete waste of 90 minutes. I never suspected Michelle Pfieffer and Kathy Bates could act so BADLY!!! it was hideous. It was reminiscent of a high school play with everyone putting on a dfferent accent. I'm not sure what accent Kathy Bates was trying to pull off but it wasn't working.

What a shocker! The best thing about this movie was the sets and costumes. Rupert Friend did a very good languid young man but the dialogue throughout was stilted and flat.

An interesting and quirky look into the 'dress ups' era. Not the normal period piece you would expect where its all glitz and glamour in the upper upper class. This movie looks at lower class socialities and how they live. A delicate weave of romance, drama and power play that just seems to hook you in from start to finish. Some brilliantly acted roles but yes, it is quirky. Well worth a look if you enjoy period movies

Impeccably produced, beautifully written, costumed spectacularly and very well acted. This is a very pleasant way to while away an couple of hours. The dialogue is delicious, though I didn't like the voiceover-another voice may have made it work!. . Michelle Pfeiffer as the aging prostitute who falls for her friends vacuous son is still extremely beautiful and is very convincing in the role. Three and a half stars.

Period piece, exceptionally well done, with a few surprises. It starts slowly, but gets more involved and complicated. Detractions include the narration, vacuous women who quickly get annoying and the strange mix of British and American accents (set in France, surely it would make more sense for the movie to be in French).
