Casino Royale (2006)
Moderate action violence
Casino Royale introduces James Bond before he holds his licence to kill. But Bond is no less dangerous, and with two professional assassinations in quick succession, he is elevated to "00" status. Bond's first 007 mission takes him to Madagascar, where he is to spy on a terrorist, Mollaka (Sebastien Foucan). Not everything goes to plan and Bond decides to investigate, independently of MI6, in order to track down the rest of the terrorist cell. Following a lead to the Bahamas, he encounters Dimitrios (Simon Abkarian) and his girlfriend, Solange (Caterina Murino). He learns that Dimitrios is involved with Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), banker to the world's terrorist organisations. Secret Service Intelligence reveals that Le Chiffre is planning to raise money in a high stakes poker game in Montenegro at Le Casino Royale. MI6 assigns 007 to play against him, knowing that if Le Chiffre loses it will destroy his organisation.

This is a prequel to the other James Bond movies and shows how he got his 00 prefix and his first Aston Martin. It's got all the classic Bond ingredients but still manages to overturn some of the cliches. For example in one scene James Bond doesn't care whether his martini is stirred or shaken; and the female lead is smart and sassy and doesn't fall for Bond's male machismo. My only criticism is the over-use of mobile phones to assist the plot, however, it's worth watching just for the opening chase sequence. This is easily one of the best Bond movies.

However, the action was little and far between - even though the car crash was the best i have seen WOW... that stuntman needs a bonus :)
The tittliation was less than inother 007 movies (probably bec of today's 'correctness')
I sat through a lonnnng poker game with a fight and a poisoning to break it up...
but the plots and twists were good so I think all up it was a very good - albeit predictable - james bond movie

Loved it! Wasn't sure how I would like the "Blonde Bond",but I thought it was amazing. Nice to see how Bond was formed into the person we see in later films. Scenery was stunning,supporting cast amazing,and the story line intriguing from start to finish. Can't wait to see Quantum Of Solace now!

Don't go in expecting sophisticated plotting or commonsense to play much of a role. That said, the action sequences are brilliant, Daniel Craig gives Connery himself a run for his money, and Judi Dench is hilarious, if sadly underused. Added fun comes from trying to make sense of the plot afterwards.

I must admit that this is the first James Bond movie I have ever seen. I was actually a pretty awesome movie with tons of action and it has converted me into a fan. I gave four stars because I didn't really understand the black and white bit at the beginning but perhaps it was a lead on from the previous film or something? Otherwise I'd give it FIVE STARS!!!

The action is more "in your face" than all the other Bonds. But without doubt Craig portrays a more believable Bond. At least you believe he is a secret agent capable of cold, calculated murder rather than an oversexed party boy with cool gadgets.

I grew up with James Bond and to be honest I'd gone off the genre...I've not seen Pierce Brosnan etc...I quite like Daniel Craig as an edgier, more reckless Bond. A great action film that has re-enthused me and I will now see Quantam of Solace

Crap and more crap, the opening scenes of running jump after jump from atop construction equiptment made me nauseous, the storyline was at best weak and underwritten. It may have gone into the background of bond but i dont think it did i justice, daniel craig was a poor choice to play bond, may have been more convincing had they dyed his hair because the blondness and the white eyebrows frankly put me off, whilst i love a good action sequence these ones were very poorly done and so obviously stunted it was a joke, stunts are meant to be seamless leaving us believe them.
The only good part was when bond cracked the joke about le chiferre being able to say he has touched his balls!
If your a die hard bond fan give it a go but i personally was disappointed.

Easily the most exciting Bond movie. Craig plays a much grittier role than is traditionally associated with the Bond franchise. In my opinion, though, the movie is leagues behind the Bourne series in terms of intelligence and suspense. As a prequel it does, however, provide a good explanation for Bond's womanising ways in 'future' movies from the series.

A whole new era for the Bond franchise? There can be little doubt that Daniel Craig’s Bond comes closest to fulfilling the wishes of those who have always clamoured for a Bond more true to Fleming’s literary character. Craig is entirely convincing as a hard-as-nails operator, quite capable, willing and apparently licensed, to kill at a moment’s notice. The movie is stripped down – gone are most of the gadgets and catchphrases, except for one which is very amusingly parodied. The fast cars and the gorgeous girls are thankfully still there. Although at one point Bond does drive a Ford, which must surely be a first and may be taking realism a bit too far.
I enjoyed the movie and I think this is a necessary and exciting new direction for Bond. Necessary because the last Brosnan instalments had taken the gadgetry and stunts too far into the realm of fantasy. The invisible car and those ludicrous scenes where he “surfs” on a chip of an ice-berg spring to mind. Mind you, I can’t help wondering whether I might miss some of the polish and style of the old Bond.

My DVD player was apparently incompatable with this DVD but when I finally got to see this I was blown away. Not only is it a great story but all the characters are so well drawn - and for once 007 becomes fully emotionally committed to his woman, with devastating consequences. Every scene is played for its full imapct and the use of digital technology for once does not lead to a sense of unreality. Go for it!

While the opening sequence was a kind of break from tradition in that it was more low tech than the usual bond opening the movie went down hill from there in terms of maintaining interest. The story was uneventful and just plain boring, to the point I didn't care if Daniel Craig is a better bond than Brosnon: there wasn't enough of a plot to keep me watching until the end.

Daniel Craig as the new James Bond is a great casting in this new 007 adventure. Visually a treat and although I found the plot a bit difficult to grasp it didnt detract from an enjoyable few hours viewing. Not relying on the *gadgetry* of past films this focuses more on the human side of Bond's character and a relationship with the beautiful Eva Green cast as the love interest. It has a some great action sequences, scenic locations and highly recommended.

I think the new Bond is portrayed well in this movie in which some ways should have been the first of the Bond movies as it is James' initial introduction to the 007 status. The action scenes are fantastic and the scenery and locations are Bond all the way. But PLEASE that is "NO" way to treat an Astin Martin Vanquish!!!

A very exciting and fast action movie in parts. An excellent storyline and while Daniel Craig makes a very good James Bond, I don't think anyone will ever be as good as Sean Connery or Roger Moore. They just had the right combination of humor, together with their ability to portray Bond with a suave style not present in this one. Still worth watching.

Let's face it, the old formula was becoming tedious and this is a welcome change in direction for Bond films. The story progresses at a cracking pace and the action is very believable. Daniel Craig is a more human Bond. When he is hit violently by a thug you frequently wince in empathy as if you feel the pain too. He even falls in love.
However, it can be confusing at times. It's obviously a prequel but the setting is today, as evidenced by the technology. It also shows how he acquired his 1960s Aston Martin, yet Dame Judi Dench is still M. Many things are explained in this film about Bond's later behavior but the less said about this the better.
Minor shortcomings aside, this is a great action film and a worthy addition to the series.
