Casablanca: easy to enter, but much harder to leave, especially if your name is on the Nazis' most-wanted list. Atop that list is Czech Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), whose only hope is Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical American who sticks his neck out for no one...especially Victor's wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), the ex-lover who broke his heart. So when Ilsa offers herself in exchange for Laszlo's safe transport out of the country, the bitter Rick must decide what's more important - his own happiness or the countless lives that hang in the balance. Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture, Casablanca is ""America's most popular and beloved movie - and rightly so"" (The Motion Picture Guide)!!

“Play it once, Sam. For old times’ sake.” This is one of cinema’s most misquoted lines, and provided the name for this regular feature. The film in question, 1942’s Casablanca, is undoubtedly a Hollywood classic that falls in the “never should be remade” category alongside Gone With the Wind. Directed by Michael Curtiz (Mildred Pierce), Humphrey Bogart stars as the weary American expatriate Rick Blaine, living in Casablanca during the early stages of the Second World War. He runs a nightclub that provides access for refugees seeking illicit letters of transit to escape to America, attracting the unwanted attention of Captain Renault (Claude Rains).

When Victor Laslo (Paul Henried), a famed rebel, seeks his help to acquire papers for himself and his wife, Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman), Rick is reunited with his once true love - Ilsa. Despite fleeing him when the Nazis invaded Paris, Ilsa now wants to stay with Rick in Casablanca, however the film’s honest depiction of the way the heart makes one act sees Rick discover love and virtue are one and the same.

Despite the film’s popularity now, at the time of its release those involved were not aware they were creating something so unique. Written by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch, the film went on to win Best Picture, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay at the Academy Awards. It also earned nominations for Best Leading and Supporting Actor, and Best Cinematography, Black and White, amongst others.

Interestingly, the film was shot in sequence as the script pages were still being written during production, resulting in a surprise ending not only for those involved in the film, but for the audience too. The film’s famous closing lines were recorded several weeks after shooting had concluded.

For a film that is written about countless times, what is it that makes Casablanca such an endearing story? It gives its audience a perfect balance of drama, romance, political tension and even laughs, and despite some wooden characters and some weak dialogue, the romance portrayed by Bogart and Bergman makes the film a true Old Hollywood classic.

Absolute classic. A must see once in your lifetime. Otherwise every couple of years should do. Ingrid Bergman incredibly beautiful.

One of my favourite 'classic' films so the very high rating follows. With Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains leading a great cast why not? But what struck me most on seeing ti again after many years was not so much the inherant (but charmingly filmed!) sexism or the mystery and ultimate morality of the story line, with love taking centre stage at first, but then unexpectedly being pushed aside by patriotism and support of the allied cause. The great cynic in Bogart is overwhelmed by his devotion to a higher cause.

This is the greatest movie ever made. Every scene fits perfectly building the story. Every scene is beautiful. The story is unforgettable--a boy's perfect dream.

Great movie. I'm 35 and watched it for the first time. Humphrey is very smooth and the characters all put others before themselves throughout this movie when it counts. Romantic

Casablanca has received countless accolades and they are all deserved. At its core is a classic tale of a gut-wrenching decision between personal reward and the greater good. The scene at the end at the airport when Blaine (Bogart) confronts that dilemma is classic cinema. Bogart and Bergman's characters sizzle with sexual frisson, and every scene is charged with tension. It is refreshing to view a dialogue-driven movie that was made in the days before special effects etc. Some films become dated and irrelevant over time, but not this one, it's a masterpiece.

Another all time favourite that I have decided I MUST own. Love all the quirky characters, the subtle messages unspoken between characters, and the sense of patriotism it captures. I think there is a flaw in Bergmann character falling in love with an older man 'who teaches her so much about life'. Doesn't sound like love to me - sounds like teenage infatuation. Also it raises the question whether some people are more worthy of sacrifice than others. I don't think so but you may disagree.

This DVD was sticking in several places. I had to fast forward to overcome the sticking and thereby lost the sense of some parts of the movie. Not impressed.

Casablanca is one of Hollywood's finest classical icons! Casablanca is a great romance story that is not a bit mushy. One of the interesting relationships in the movie is Rick and Capt. Renault, the police prefect who is played by Claude Rains, the relationship is of perfect cynicism and one liners that will never be forgotten.

I love the classic songs played in the smokey club and also the fashion and interior decoration of the sets were very impressive but I found the movie to be very long, drawn out and mostly boring. It sadly didn't hold my attention for very long.

I feel really bad about this - I tried to watch this classic movie but after 10 mins or so, gave up! It just seems so cliched and highly dramatic, I find it really hard to watch old movies, they just don't interest me.

This is a classic movie which has lost nothing with the passage of time. It holds your interest all the way, and there are no whiz-bang special effects to grab the viewer, just the sheer class of the movie.

In my opinion there is no greater movie made. Nearly every scene has a famous piece of dialogue and the cast deliver it perfectly. It had drama, comedy, romance and action. It is easy to see why most 'top ten' lists put this one at the top. This is a movie that should please most, no matter what genre you prefer (except maybe horror). 10/10.

A old time classic which delivers it all...a oldie but a goodie...with long gone stars from hollywoods begining in Humphrey BOGART and ingrid Burgman....who stared in many movies now looked at as classics...black and white set in early war time with germany....bit slow ...but well worth the watch....if only for historic value....definetly a family movie.....actors looked a projecting current values of the day...if it was.nt the norm it was,nt shown....where today...anything goes....role modeling is something our actor/sport stars could consider today and take a leaf out of the old book.....loved it.

I have seen it several times and much has been written about this film. My two cents worth of opinion is that if you had to see only one film from this period, this would have to be it. This film is as perfect as any can be. It has a good pace; it is compact and every scene counts; it has wonderful characters, each one interesting; it deals with big themes; it tells a story which encapsulates the period; the dialogue is tight; the humour is warm; the tragedy worldly; the personal triumphs inspiring. And ofcourse beautiful Ingrid Bergman is alone worth the price of admission.
