Director: Roman Polanski
Actors: Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly

Carnage is a razor-sharp, biting comedy centered on parental differences. After two boys duke it out on a playground, the parents of the victim invite the parents of the bully over to work out their issues. A polite discussion of childrearing soon escalates into verbal warfare, with all four parents revealing their true colors. None of them will escape the carnage.

Directed by Roman Polanski (The Pianist), Carnage stars Academy Award-winner Kate Winslet (The Reader,) and Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as husband and wife Nancy and Alan Cowan, opposite Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs, The Accused,) and Academy Award-nominee John C. Reilly (Chicago) as Penelope and Michael Longstreet.

An absolutely riveting drama that takes place in an apartment over a number of hours. Two married couples meet to amicably settle the fallout from a physical stoush between their 11 yr old boys. Conversation initially is pleasant, polite and somewhat superficial - it gradually deteriorates as accusations are flung and defended, inhibitions are discarded when a bottle of whisky is opened, resulting in a stream of angry insults and juvenile behaviour that is often hilarious to witness. Performances from Winslet, Foster, Reilly & Waltz are superb - particularly the ladies, bravo! My husband and I got some good belly laughs from the ridiculous behaviour on display, astounding stuff!

As a play I can see this working, but I'll remember the name Roman Polanski and keep away from his work if this is the kind of strangeness he directs. It ALL takes place in the same room, with four very different parents dragging out what should have been a 5 minute conversation trying to align their responses to a playground incident. I like Foster and Winslett but I don't like either of their characters in this story, although I can see how the personalities depicted are quite 'real'. Didn't really enjoy this one, and my husband fell asleep.

Good play turned into movie with perfect casts - no surprise here but excellent acting works by them.

A brilliant drama. Bit disappointing that it finished off so quickly and abruptly.
