Calendar Girls is the hilariously quirky comedy starring Golden Globe winners Helen Mirren (Gosford Park, Teaching Mrs. Tingle) and Julie Walters (Billy Elliot, Harry Potter series), and directed by Nigel Cole (Saving Grace). When twelve extraordinary members of the Women's Institute, a proper local charity, decide they need to find a new way to raise money for a very worthy cause, they turn to their annual calendar. Not wanting to divorce themselves from the traditional photographs, they give the calendar a very untraditional twist. Behind the baked goods, the apple pressing and the flower arrangements are the women - completely nude! This heartfelt story will have you laughing and crying at the same time.

Very funny, entertaining, everything positive! Even for red-blooded blokes, because this is probably the last time Dame Helen Mirren will do a topless scene and still titillate the fire out of me.

Beautiful film without the schmaltz that Hollywood would have filled this true story with. Thoroughly enjoyable, with liberating performances by the cast, with the ever dependable Helen Mirren and Julie Walters turning in stand out performances.

This was better than I expected. It's good fun, a simple delightful tale. Nice to see Helen Mirren playing a soft and feminine character, after all those years of Prime Suspect. Although her accent comes and goes a little distractingly here, it is a warm and enjoyable performance. Julie Walters gives the strongest performance, she is marvellous here and provides a lot of the heart of the film. The rest of the ladies are wonderful, authentic and relatable, and bringing a lot of joy to their roles.

A very good movie.,light and entertaining. A very good storyline with lots of humour and also sadness. You will cry sometimes but laugh most of the time. An excellent cast and as usual a brilliant Helen Mirren as Chris. Definately worth watching.

A touching movie about determination and friendship. A chic flick yes, but it's well worth watching these English woman face their fears and become triumphant.

I found this movie to be very boring. The story line was weak and not written very well. Although a "nice" story, I really didn't appreciate it in any other way.

The sort of poignant comedies that the British do so well. Helen Mirren & Julie Walters were exceptional, but a great ensemble cast piece.

Brilliant performances by most of our favourite British character actors. Pity the over-the-top Hollywood sequence broke the spell and spoilt the mood at the end.

Titillation this was not, but good humour and the occasional show of good camera work made up for that. Based on a true story, it perhaps has more to say to the armchair-bound, do-nothings in the world's communities, than it does to aspirant media personalities.

Whilst I found this DVD to be good value I nevertheless felt a bit let down by it. It seemed to me to be trying too hard to do a "Full Monty" and lacked, as a result, a true identity and the performances by the any of the well known female artists did much for me. They were just not real.

A real hoot. Typical British comedy provides understated humour and uses a simple story to great effect. Serious side of the film is enhanced through good use of comedy.

An amusing movie, which really appealed to my mother! We sat down & just enjoyed watching this movie. A good story line, and likeable characters, and I believe the story was based on real life! If you enjoy a light hearted british comedy and the thought of older ladies taking their clothes off for charity.. Then this is for you! 3 Paws.
