The Cabin in the Woods feels like a very special episode of Buffy. No, not 'very special' like the one where all the Scoobies discovered that beer was in fact bad, but a brilliant bonus instalment that has arrived nearly ten years since that groundbreaking series called it quits. The Cabin in the Woods feels like a very special episode of Buffy. No, not 'very special' like the one where all the Scoobies discovered that beer was in fact bad, but a brilliant bonus instalment that has arrived nearly ten years since that groundbreaking series called it quits. Directed by former Vampire Slayer scribe Drew Goddard, and co-written by that series' creator Joss Whedon, The Cabin in the Woods is both chilling and cackle-inspiring. Most significantly, it's consistently surprising, and that alone is cause for recommendation in the age of endless reboots and the non-stop barrage of demonic possession movies.

In honour of the film's fresh, funny, freakiness, we won't dance around its ingenious plot. If you would like the secret of The Cabin in the Woods to remain just that, turn back now and know that it's been heartily recommended. But, if you dare to venture down the twisted path - through the Wes Craven channel , over the John Carpentered bridge, and by the mist-drenched Sean Cunningham lake - you can explore the unique foundation upon which the Cabin stands. Just watch out for those spindly Sam Raimi trees. They can get a little handsy.

It’s a novel concept. What if all those horror movie clichés were in fact historically refined and statistically reliable methods of dispatching dumb teenagers to appease an angry deity? Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins – two incredibly appealing character actors more than capable of delivering whip-fast, Whedonesque one-liners – play workaday employees of some major corporation that manipulates scenarios in which kids will find themselves unwittingly subject to supernatural suffering. Their bloody sacrifice postpones the end-of-the-world by another couple of weeks, and the bored engineers take bets on which monster from their rogues gallery will be randomly selected to do the torturing. Will it be the mutant hick family raised from the dead, or will the honour go to a batch of evil clowns? Maybe aliens. Maybe a giant snake. Perhaps, vengeful God willing, the freakish and underutilised merman will get his moment to shine.

The affable kids doomed to this cruel but necessary experiment are Dana (Kristen Connolly), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Holden (Jesse Williams), and Marty (Fran Kranz), variations on the traditional Virgin, Jock, Slut, Nerd, and Stoner stereotypes. Though none adequately fits into their prescribed form, those clever engineers fill their holiday cabin with drugs and gasses that reduce their brain cells, increase their hormones, and inspire them to investigate mysterious bumps in the night (even when a reasonable person would smartly – and instantly – bail). The five of them similarly feel like characters we’ve long known and loved from Whedon’s previous endeavours, which makes the experience of watching them suffer slightly harrowing. Then again, since when aren’t we forced to mourn the death of a beloved character from those shows?

Goddard has a good understanding of the genre, just as Raimi exhibited in Drag Me to Hell. That said, it’s a much better satire and spoof than it is a horror flick. All the self-awareness means we are never really immersed in the sensation of impending dread that the best scary movies often drown us in. But the film is truly funny, and it does explode in a final melee of imagination and gore that supersedes any other production that has sought to scare us good over the past few years. Witty, well performed, and just wicked enough without ever being truly disturbing (for better or worse), The Cabin in the Woods is one hell of a ride.

4/5

Terrible! Very weird but pointless story line and I was bored throughout the whole movie, waiting for something interesting to happen. They tried to do something 'different' with this movie but it's going nowhere, just people being killed and lots of blood everywhere. Don't bother with this one.

Brilliant twist on the horror genre. If you've never seen a horror film though you might be a bit confused, hence all the single star ratings.

Cross between 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and 'The Hunting Games'. Very kinky and gory with a touch of fantasy. About a bunch of zombies and mythical creatures trying to kill a group of teenagers in the woods, in an interactive 'Truman Show' kind of way.

Certainly different. I liked the twisted take on the standard 'isolated in woods when family of crazy killers come get you'. I thought the monsters later were a bit too CGI stagy to scare me. The ending was ok but I saw it coming. Some very good characters. Could have been better but is certainly enjoyable although a bit too bloody.

As a Joss Whedon fan I loved it. I love the way he played on the cliches and changed it up. The man is a genius.

This was a very clever movie. It had reasonable actors, a twisted story line and no way you could guess what the ending was going to be.Well worth a watch.

Listen not to the naysayers they know not what they rent. First and foremost this is a horror film so if it's filed in the horror section and you don't like the sight of blood move on to the rom coms. A cleaver little film with an entirely unexpected ending. This will appeal to fans of horror that can have a chuckle at the genre and not take it all too seriously. The film pulls out all the cliches in the beginning but bear with it as things take a turn for the weird and the ending makes itall worthwhile. An amusing perspective on the modern horror movie that is worth a watch for something different to the usual slasher fare.

Certainly not your run of the mill horror movie. A very novel story line with an ending that certainly caught me by surprise. This is not a movie for the squeamish but an entertaing one just the same.

What a shocker, one very sick movie - Very disappointing Chris Hemsworth's name is against this movie. I would have turned it off but I thought it has to get better, but no it didn't....

I liked this. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting that's for sure. Loved all the creatures that you get glimpses of towards the end. I guessed pretty close to the storyline early on but liked the twists and turns to get there. Liked the ending too, not your usual.

The trailer looked interesting enough for me to get this. The idea that horror movies are really hidden camera reality shows that provide human sacrifices for ancient gods is pretty clever.

Not quite what I was expecting, which was the usual as in a group of young people in an out of the way place slasher movie. And so I was pleasantly surprised at its creativity and what a solid production it was. Writer Josh Wheldon has really bought out some kooky-interesting stuff over the years and this is no exception. Loads of special effects but a good story overall along with some fun horror. And there's some deeper stuff in it too, and that's wayyy deep, haha.

As Dave S commented earlier, this is not a traditional horror film but more a light-hearted satire on all the clichés and presumptions of the genre. It's not a film that is going to change anyone's life, but I found plenty to enjoy here with quite a few laughs along the way.

What was that? Absolute non sense. Worse storyline ever & a dreadful end. It was like watching Van Helsing , Evil Dead with a touch of Dumb & Dumber. Two stars for the funny parts. No scare in this. An idiotic movie proving that US horror has no idea on what to do next since Asian & European cinema have proven their superiority for the genre.

Clearly not for everyone but I loved this film. Likely to disappoint anyone expecting a traditional horror film, as it's less of a horror movie than a satirical meta-commentary on the horror genre. A lot of modern horror films try to be "meta" (thanks SCREAM) but there are few that take things this far or do it this well.

Oh what a perfect movie. This turns all the horror movie cliches on it's head. It starts out just like any other '5 teens go on a weekend break' and flips it all on it's head. Yes there is the blonde, the sporty guy, the geek, the brains, the virgin but they are not what they seem. Penned by the brilliant Joss Whedon (and Drew Goddard) this is an unexpected gem. Very funny in parts, very gory in parts but always with it's tongue firmly in cheek. Very clever and worth watching.

this is not a horror movie. its a mixture of Hunger Games, where the situation is controlled by outside influences, like what gets sent in by what & attackes them & by the way are killed, & if it's day or night , whether they blow up or survive & the other movie Tucker & Dale v's Evil where the killings are just so stupid it makes you laugh. this movie is so not scary its too silly. the last 30 mins are the best part of this movie. i watched this movie with my 3 teen boys who laughed through this movie. its so stupid you need to watch it,

The posters promise more gore the MA rating promises less. Joss Whedon promises tight writing with suspect (but sometimes funny ha ha) dialogue. The bunker is reminiscent of Buffy's Adam days or Doll House. It is best to go into this with little knowledge of the plot so ignore spoilers. But you do get to see the difference between Zombies, Zombie red neck hillbilly's and Mermen et al. Just misses 5 stars due to the nagging notion that this could have been more edgy come on Joss you're writing for the big screen here.

IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT A HORROR FILM!! Two minutes in you'll wonder: "Um, is this the movie we ordered?" Twenty minutes later you'll wonder why more of your friends didn't tell you about this movie earlier. Don't read reviews, don't look it up on IMDB, and for goodness sake don't ask your friends what it's about, coz the secret is the key to getting the most from this film. Watch, accept, and enjoy. :)

I thought it was weird. There was some kind of plot where certain categories of people had to be sacrificiced to keep the world going but it was not clear enough who the organizers were, and whose world had to be kept going. More could have been provided in the dialogue.

Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods. Not having read any of the reviews going around prior to watching it I must say it is one of the worst films I have seen in a long time. The thing is, am I missing something? I get the fact that it is a parody or an anti-horror film or perhaps even a nod (whether positive or negative) to horror films generally, but I still don't like it. It was predictable from the start (why did that eagle have to hit the invisible boundary to the cabin? It made the later scene with the motor bike jump completely redundant). The acting was poor and even though the film may be satirical it is still painful to watch.
