Based on the William Inge play, "Bus Stop" concerns Bo, a young, obnoxious rancher, who has just arrived in Phoenix to compete in a rodeo. While in a rowdy, cowboy-infested restaurant, he becomes smitten with Cherie, an over-the-hill but still sexy saloon singer. Soon after meeting her, the immature Bo decides he's ready to wed his new love; unfortunately for him, she is not at all interested. As a result, the pair engages in an emotional -- and physical -- battle for Cherie's mind, body and soul.

Although it is Marilyn and she is absolutely radiant and can't take your eyes off her watchable, she nevertheless seems positively strung out; gnashing and knawing - almost too painful to watch. There is a true underlying sense of despondency in her performance even when she is playing happy. I love the scene in the bus when she explains to the young girl what sort of man she wants to eventually marr; "I want a guy.. with some real regard for me, aside from all that lovin' stuff." That scene is a real standout in the film; it transcends it and seems to be a plea straight from Marilyn's heart to the rest of the world; including those wretched studio bosses. There is definite humour in this witty script; although I can't but wish that she finished the plotted out course on her map.
