Infrequent strong violence, coarse language

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Actors: Frances McDormand, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, J.K. Simmons

At the headquarters of the CIA, analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) arrives for a top-secret meeting. Unfortunately for Cox, the secret is soon out: he is being ousted. Elsewhere in the suburbs, and seemingly worlds apart, Hardbodies Fitness Centres employee Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) can barely concentrate on her work. She is consumed with her life plan for extensive cosmetic surgery, and confides her mission to can-do colleague Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt). When a computer disc containing material for the CIA analyst's memoirs accidentally falls into the hands of Linda and Chad, the duo are intent on exploiting their find. Events spiral out of everyone's and anyone's control, in a cascading series of darkly hilarious encounters.

“It’s the same old song, but with a different meaning since you’ve been gone”. This lyric from that classic Four Tops song played a prominent role in The Coen Brothers first film Blood Simple. I wonder if they realised just how indicative that line would be of their next 11 movies. Of course, I’m talking about the ‘same old song’ part, not so much the toe-tapping, lustful plea that takes up the rest of the Motown classic. The plot of Burn After Reading is the same basic outline that we’ve already seen in Coen classics like Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men. A seemingly regular Joe comes across an opportunity to make some money, and ends up ruining the lives of everyone around them. If that was all there was to it, it wouldn’t be a Coen Brothers film. The reason this song ...

The reason this song never gets old is thanks to The Coens love of toying with traditional conventions, and their ability to litter the screen with bizarre characters.

John Malkovich plays recently fired CIA agent Oswald Cox, who plots his revenge against his former employers in the form of a scathing memoir. His cold-hearted wife (Swinton) wonders just who would want to read such a thing. A CD containing the memoir falls into the hands of dim-witted gym employees Linda and Chad (McDormand and Pitt) through means I’m not even going to attempt to explain. Chad just wants to give it back to Cox, and hopefully receive a ‘Good Samaritan’ fee. Linda however, sees an opportunity to squeeze some extra money out of him. If he doesn’t comply, they’ll take the CD to the Russians. Apparently she thinks it’s 1962.

Amongst all this mayhem is Government agent Harry Pfarrer (Clooney). How does he fit into all of this? Well, he’s having an affair with Cox’s wife, is also dating Linda, and he might have accidentally killed someone innocent. However, in Burn After Reading, innocence is relative. A likable character amongst this group is just someone who hasn’t been given the opportunity to do something bad.

The Coens have said Burn After Reading is their attempt at making a spy film. At times, you almost think you are watching a high energy Bourne flick. But that just goes to prove their talent, because underneath the veneer of espionage, exists the kind of kooky characters exclusively seen in Coen Brothers films. Just when you think something funny (or horrible) is about to happen, these characters do the exact opposite of what you expect. Check out the scene where Harry invites Linda to see the ominous machine in his basement. If anyone actually guesses what it is before seeing it, I will eat my shoe. However, amongst all the zany idiocy, there are still extremely horrible things happening. This film features two of the most shocking and graphic murders ever committed to film. Being a Coen Brothers flick though, you kind of want to laugh when it happens. But that’s mostly because you’ve been holding your breath for so long.

I absolutely loved this movie. I went in expecting a fun-loving crime caper, and left with the same grim hope for humanity I felt after No Country for Old Men (oddly, that's a compliment). Don’t be fooled by that light-hearted trailer; this is a dark film. That’s not to say it isn’t fun. Pitt and Clooney are seemingly engaged in a battle of wits (or should that be dims) to see who can play the stupidest character. They’ll be glad to know they’re both winners. John Malkovich plays the archetypal-John Malkovich character. But he does it so well! There are also great performances from J.K Simmons and Richard Jenkins, who are both turning into the go-to-guys for quality ensemble films.

There are those who say Burn After Reading is just a Coen Brothers afterthought – not worthy of the analysis reserved for No Country or Barton Fink. Well, maybe it doesn't need to be analysed within an inch of its life. Maybe these characters can turn up for an hour and a half, have their fun, and disappear. Since when did making a brisk, funny, riveting movie become a bad thing? Burn After Reading happily sits in the upper echelon of Coen films. It might be the same old song, but I could watch these guys play it over and over again.

4.5/5

It is "stupid " but on purpose, just relax and enjoy! The world of CIA collides with the local gym. Features some famous American actors. Contains an extra feature showing just how much fun they had making it.

No moral, no aim, there is no story line to this movie was a let down and an overall waste of rental. About a quest of one lady to get money for plastic surgery and it links to a guy who is a playboy with a few ladies and a shooting. Left feeling confused and unsure of whether the movie actually finished like that.

What the! This was a weired movie. Felt like hollywood was just a little bit in love with it's self when it let people get away with making this one. Lots of hollow characters being very shallow. George Clooney's character pulls this movie through, just don't expect to feel like you've had a life changing experience or be blown away by a great story line.

Hilarious, off-the-wall, and revelatory performances by Monsieurs Pitt, Cluney, Malkovitch, and many other great character actors, including Frances McDormand of Fargo fame. Of course we've come to expect this from the amazing Coen Brothers', but still a lovely gem of a caper, neatly wrapped up in a kooky, tragicomic setup. The making of doco on this is lots of fun too.

Brad Pitt in particular delivers a great character, (difficult to forget!) and is really well paired with Frances McDormand. Everyone is despicable in this movie - some more than others. It was well cast with excellent actors and more fascinating because of the characters than anything else. Story line seemed disjointed or unfinished. Although not a laugh all the way through type of movie, both my husband and I had serious belly laughs at different moments. Worth seeing, but not worth putting at the top of the queue.

I'm a Coen Brothers fan and this film is a cracker. They excel at creating characters who are mostly ordinary but each have a quirky individuality. Add several of these to a plot with a few "what would happen if we did this?" turns and you have controlled mayhem which is totally entertaining. The cast is very strong and it's hard to single out favourites but John Malkovich as the disgruntled intel agency employee and Brad Pitt as the airhead gym instructor are unforgettable.

I loved every minute of this film, and what a great lineup of actors. The send-up-a-spook genre is not original but the dialogue and humour are brilliant and George Clooney is gorgeous as always. This is one of the few times we've watched a DVD twice and laughed just as much the second time. Brad Pitt as the dumb gym attendant/personal trainer is perfect slapstick and it was a pleasure seeing him being stupid rather than being the boring romantic lead.

Yay, the Coen Brothers are at it again with another fine example of their trademark pithy pitch black wit. Frances McDormand is always a joy to watch and puts in a terrific performance as a middle age gym worker who sees the possibilities for shenanigans that will pay off when she discovers a CD Rom of Top Level secrets penned by the sacked CIA agent, John Malkovich. Brad Pitt must have loved playing her knuckle-headed partner in wannabe spy crime and does so with flawless non-judgemental fun. Neither of these superficial conspiracy theorists can see beyond the ???smarter??? one???s desire for cosmetic ???surgeries.??? Ever smooth George Clooney drips with delightful sexy charm and again shows us that what???s on the pretty surface is not always as it seems ??? and in this case, to his character???s deluded detriment. Sound too serious for fun? That???s the Coen???s style... This flick is such a riot ??? the ???head??? of the CIA seems just as confused as he should be. If the info discovered by a gym worker is a real threat to national security it should be monitored, but if merely stupidly dappling ???round the edges? Best it???s burned after reading... But which is the best way to burn? Burned in a pyre, or burned on disk for yet more unintended shenanigans? Sarah Lee may have prided herself on production of pastries layer upon layer upon layer... but as twits like McDormand and Pitt show us in this case, the pastry should not just be burned, but composted. Burn After Reading is testament to an information age plumped up by superficiality, yet to dig a little? Most is indeed worth burning. Hats off to the Coen???s... they???re clever, and know how to have riotous fun in their loving digs at what???s what (and never as it seems) along the way. Sarah Lee???s promise never quite ???got??? what the Coen???s deliver; multi layered, yes; but sweeter with each layer after multiple viewings. Classic storytelling, and Highly Recommended.

Excellent darkly comic story. The characters are great and very well cast. The plot is terrific - instead of making wild leaps of association (as is common in Hollywood) it shows the accidental nature of events

One of the most stupid movies we have ever seen. Couldn't figure out why George Clooney and Brad Pitt would waste their time in a movie like this. Hugely dissapointed!

Another idiosyncratic offering from the Coen brothers which goes off in several directions and, as a result, doesn't quite pull it off. I found Clooney's performance annoying rather than amusing.

One of the worst films ever seen. Stupid story line. You are sold on the cast to see it, but what a waist of time to sit through!

Typical Coen Brothers farce - lately it's been hard to tell one of their films from any other - highly over-rated

The thread of this movie is captured in the opening scenes where a CIA agent is being demoted while his manager says, "This doesn't have to be hard", meaning of course for himself. Distinct lives of insensitive deceit leave the CIA in the dust as fine performances by all of the principal actors carry the meagre plot and meaningful black humour to its stunned conclusion. Very fine.

Overall, a very average movie - at best. Some of it is funny, some a bit silly and unbelievable, but mostly it's a mental challenge trying to fill in the holes in the plot and connnecting the jumps in the story. All too much effort for little joy!

High profile cast - totally wasted on this movie. Total waste of 1 1/2 hours which I'll never get back. Don't waste your time or money.

This is a must-see movie! Both Brad Pitt and George Clooney are out of their usual roles and are just excellent. Frances Mcdormand ,Tilda Swinton, and John Malkovich are also outstanding. The story has many stories within the story and unexpected twists and turns. It has all the ingredients, drama, comedy, pathos - not to be missed!

The Coen bros' are masters of the black comedy and drama mix, Brad Pitt steals the show in this film as a thick head idiot fitness trainer, his scenes are So funny, classic. Once the Coen's love the actor's performance they keep those same actor's, Clooney's character is a strange one, and Malkovich playing a crazy nut who is on the edge,( How many times has he done that role ?). Mcdormand ( once again in a Coen film ) is a simpleton who just wants a facelift and nip-tuck so she can find love. For the most part the film work's well but seems to fizz-out after the half-way mark , when a character departs. A bit too much swearing for me and be prepared for a quick shock of violence, but no gory stuff.

Though much different from Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing, BAR could be titled the same, largely the result of the characters’ lack of understanding, communication and plain stupidity. It’s darkly, darkly funny with a few brief violent scenes à la Coen brothers. At the conclusion, a minor player asks, "Well, what did we learn here?” That some humans make idiotic decisions? We know that already! That we never really know other people including our partners? Yep! That life is pointless and human values are worthless. Hey-Zeus, I hope not! Despite its nihilistic nature BAR is likely to suck you into its whacky absurdist plot. Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich and George Clooney glow with squirm-in-your-seat performances.
