Coen Bros black comedy, but not very subtle, sick. Frances McDormand looks like she had a good time though
The Cohen Brothers do it again - not their best mind you, but still funny and quirky.
Could have been a great funny flick, but was left dissapointed.
Great cast but didnt seem to help the film, bit slow, some funny moments, Brad pits character so over the top...
Killed a bit of time..
It is "stupid " but on purpose, just relax and enjoy! The world of CIA collides with the local gym. Features some famous American actors. Contains an extra feature showing just how much fun they had making it.
Totally disappointed in this disc as I could view it no matter what I tried to do. Therefore cannot rate it as I have no clue.
Absolute waste of time. Don't bother
A tense and strange kind of laughter brought about by an unusual and creative mix of characters who were stretched well outside of their typical comfort zones, and came out trumps.
Different, I would give this a miss
It was worth watching just for John Malkovich's role - loved him.
We don't turn off a movie very often (if at all!), but after 45 minutes of this, we couldn't take any more. It was slow and the characters were over the top and silly.
Great movie. The cast were outstanding particularly Brad Pitt.
Well the Coen bros do it again. A story within a story within...well you get it.
Hope you can follow it, it all ends up tied in a big bow at the end...poor old brad..
This movie was weird. I wouldn't recommend it.
This as the stupidest movie I have evry watched.I was very dissappointed in George Clooney.I am still trying to work out what the story was ??????????
Movie is typical Coen Brothers. A little disjoinated and hard to follow at times
A brilliantly clever spoof on the CIA and human foolishness in general.
Grrrr. Waste of time. Fell asleep!
No moral, no aim, there is no story line to this movie was a let down and an overall waste of rental. About a quest of one lady to get money for plastic surgery and it links to a guy who is a playboy with a few ladies and a shooting. Left feeling confused and unsure of whether the movie actually finished like that.
Fun, fun, fun. Coen brothers always have these slightly off centre characters, and they end up connected in off centre ways.
Great cast and quite entertaining, but it doesn't really stay with you.
Was expecting ALOT more from this...actually kinda boring
brad pitt made this movie- otherwise it was pretty bad.
What the! This was a weired movie. Felt like hollywood was just a little bit in love with it's self when it let people get away with making this one. Lots of hollow characters being very shallow. George Clooney's character pulls this movie through, just don't expect to feel like you've had a life changing experience or be blown away by a great story line.
Loved it. Brad is hilarious. Twists and turns I wasn't expecting.
good fun movie with slightly bizarre turns - Brad Pitt should do more comedy, all cast are good
A great movie. The plot is really a series of bizarre encounters that tie a great cast of characters together. Nobody knows what they're doing and it's very funny to watch.
George Clooney was *brilliant*.
This isn't your typical Hollywood blockbuster so keep your mind open and just go along for the ride.
good fun, plot a bit confusing though
The movie was clever but I thought it didn't have much point to it and the ending didn't really wrap anything up. Not my kind of movie
A great movie that doesn't know where it's going, meanwhile you're gladly following like a puppy on a leash.
i think you either like it or you dont
I loved this movie! Although hard to classify, it turned out to be a perfect mix of intrigue, drama, and comedy. Brad Pitt has to be seen to be believed! Great fun, and with a story line interesting enough to keep you guessing.
Worst movie i think iv ever seen. its a very big waste of time and the only semi interesting parts are what is shown on the preview
a very dissapointing movie, concidering the well known actors in it, found it very hard to follow ,and in the end was still wondering what it was all about
This one is a bit different..quirky. Entertaining but wouldn't write home about it.
A strange but amusing movie. Not the 'usual' for Brad Pitt or George Clooney. I enjoyed watching it.
For a movie with some big names "George Clooney"
This was the biggest waste of time, space, money and effort I have ever experienced.
Do you self a favour and dont watch it
Found it hard to get into and then very dark humour but almost depressing in it's images of humankind. Actually liked George Clooneys performance best of all .
great cast! classic black comedy, expect the unexpected. Frances is fabulous - what a great role to have. typical Coen madness.
Hilarious, off-the-wall, and revelatory performances by Monsieurs Pitt, Cluney, Malkovitch, and many other great character actors, including Frances McDormand of Fargo fame. Of course we've come to expect this from the amazing Coen Brothers', but still a lovely gem of a caper, neatly wrapped up in a kooky, tragicomic setup. The making of doco on this is lots of fun too.
Liked it! Brad Pitt was great in it, he really made me laugh out loud.
i'm still trying to work out what it was about. Some funny parts. Brad Pitt's character was fantastic. I think something went terribly wrong with this though.
I truely enjoyed this film. Once again Brad Pitt is fantastic and what bad can you say about George. It is in the true vein of Tarantino so if you enjoy his movies you will enjoy this one.
Excellent pace with some comic genius
Pointless. Not funny. Not interesting. A waste of time. I don't have the sense of humour to appreciate these directors' movies. The nice people get killed.
Dreadful movie, I did not watch it all, language disgusting and not interesting at all. No stars
Lots of stars so expecting a great film, but not sure what I thought. In all very strange. And then it just ends.
John Malkovich is very depressing, angry, but very good in this movie, He is the only actor that shines. Brad Pitt and George Clooney are really irritating. Can't work out whether it is actually a comedy or a badly done melodrama.
Brad Pitt in particular delivers a great character, (difficult to forget!) and is really well paired with Frances McDormand. Everyone is despicable in this movie - some more than others. It was well cast with excellent actors and more fascinating because of the characters than anything else. Story line seemed disjointed or unfinished.
Although not a laugh all the way through type of movie, both my husband and I had serious belly laughs at different moments. Worth seeing, but not worth putting at the top of the queue.
I'm a Coen Brothers fan and this film is a cracker. They excel at creating characters who are mostly ordinary but each have a quirky individuality. Add several of these to a plot with a few "what would happen if we did this?" turns and you have controlled mayhem which is totally entertaining. The cast is very strong and it's hard to single out favourites but John Malkovich as the disgruntled intel agency employee and Brad Pitt as the airhead gym instructor are unforgettable.
Quite a quirky movie. Be prepared for a fair bit of swearing. Didn't really have a beginning, middle
This was a movie on how many times the word 'F*
A bit slow and very off key but ended up being very entertaining and the twists were hilarious and I haven't got a great sence of humour. Well done
Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? None of the above, it is neither black enough for a comedy, nor serious enough for a drama. I don't know what to make of it...
This movie was a little confusing and should actually have been titled correctly as I believe WTF would be more appropriate considering its extensive use.
Great cast. Ok story but took ages for me to get into, it ends well. Liked seeing Brad as this character.
Absolute rubbish! Can't understand why some good actors have bothered participating in this movie as they don't need the money and certainly won't have enhanced their reputation!
Quite good. Great actors. Funny in a black way.
Anyway who doesn't like this film has a long way to go to appreciating film. This movie is clever, witty, intriguing and brilliantly acted by all. Brad Pitt was adoptable!
OMG this film was so disappointing - would not recommend
Burn After Reading is about really stupid people, doing really stupid things end of movie. This is not a criticism. Burn After Reading is another Coen Brother's extravaganza. Picture Brad Pitt in spandex, a parnoid and badly dressed George Clooney, a vain and self centered Frances McDormand and a dim witted plot about attempting to sell secrets to the Russians! There is no-one quite like Joel and Ethan Coen. Watch and enjoy!
I found it quite difficult to follow though the acting was good. Normally I like quirky movies but this one just didn't do it for me!
Boring what was george clooney and brad pitt thinking when they stared in this movie anti climatic stupid and boring zzzzzz.
Thought the characters were good but the story was a right load of old rubbish. What a waste of talent.this isn't the first time I've thought this about Coens' films.
Movie should be retitled "Don't Bother Reading" - weak plot, not particularly funny, big names small
I loved every minute of this film, and what a great lineup of actors. The send-up-a-spook genre is not original but the dialogue and humour are brilliant and George Clooney is gorgeous as always. This is one of the few times we've watched a DVD twice and laughed just as much the second time. Brad Pitt as the dumb gym attendant/personal trainer is perfect slapstick and it was a pleasure seeing him being stupid rather than being the boring romantic lead.
Typical Coen Brothers slightly out there movie with some bizarre characters but thoroughly enjoyable. Brad Pitt
Burn After Watching more like it. Only mildy entertaining, not really funny. Overall, a bit of a let down.
Boring! Just when it finally got a little interesting, it finished.
ending was weak. movie had great potential but they ending let it down
Loved most of the dark and quirky film but hated the NOTHING ending...
Some good moments, Brad Pitt plays a great role. Enjoyable.
so much fun. take it at face value and don't think too hard.
Heard so many bad reviews about this movie so wasn't expecting much. I loved it! It was strange and quite odd but ultimately interesting and well acted by all the cast.
Great movie, excellent cast and story line. Best i've every seen George Clooney.
At the end all i could think was "the madness, the madness!"
gave 2 stars but only because i couldnt give 1 and 1/2. not the best movie....the ending was just wrong
Typical Cohen Brothers movie, touch of teh weird.....
I didn't really know much about this film before watching it, but it was hilarious. You almost don't want to watch as the scenarios get more and more ridiculous and complicated, but it really draws you in and you have to know how it ends. The characters are fantastic and actors are really out of character which makes it all the more funny. Brad Pitt's character Chad is gold.
Very funny movie - surprising roles for George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and great acting!
As usual with the Coen Bros by the end you know you have been exposed to subversive genius. 'What did we learn?' I guess we learnt not to do it again... whatever the @#$% we did'
Excellent acting from all parties, Malkovich plays a fantastic part as a paranoid short tempered analyst, Clooney is a great womaniser
Typical Coen Brothers, quirky mismatched characters all bumbling along. If you loved Fargo, you should love this.
Excellent black humour. Very funny.
Classic Coen brother's film; very entertaining and shockingly nasty at some points. You wonder how it's all going to come together, but it does so really well. Brad Pitt is fantastic!
This movie should be called Burn after Watching. Not even an all star cast can save this movie from being a complete waste of a movie night. Highly over-rated and disappointing.
Probably one of the worst movies I ever had the misfortune to waste my time seeing. I watched it with friends and we turned it off before the end ....pathetic
I thought this film would be fun - in particular seeing Brad Pitt in 'that' haircut. Instead it was heartless, illogical rubbish that kept getting worse. Aside from the characters's swearing there was a lot else I really hated about it too. It is very similar to The coen brothers' other movies in terms of plot and character development (there is none). funny? No Entertaining? No challenging? No. this movie might be better suited to psychopaths!
Good movie. Well played George and Brad,we had a good laugh
disjointed, confused - any highlights were not worth wading through the rubbish to get to. Should be titled " burn before watching " and come with a warning.
It was supposed to be funny. I am still looking for my funny bone.
I enjoyed this movie but then I'm a fan of the movies by the Coen brother's. it does follow the usual formula and the acting by George Clooney and Brad Pitt is hilarious. John Malkovich is a bit over the top. My friends who don't like this type of movie found it very boring.
For a movie full of leading Hollywood identities and directed by the Coen Brothers, I expected a lot more. This is a chaotic movie which takes a very long time to develop and has a pretty average storyline. It was supposed to be funny, but clearly was not (maybe it is American humour, which is lost on me!!). There are better movies
The next time someone tells me the Coen Brothers are talented remind me to ask them WHY?? This is the second time i've fallen for their hype and frankly fail to see where their talents are. A movie that mindlessly ambled along and failed to finish.
Well the title says it all - Burn after watching. The story did not fit together, the acting even by Brad pitt who looked like a kid on dope and George Clooney was horrible. It wasnt funny and the story continually switched between different characters and didnt make sense. Most of the actors appeared stressed and strung out and was a complete waste watching it.
Didnt think it was that good. Sort of confused movie ... which is you watch the about extra .... this is how it was made.
Clooney is a fool.
Pitt is an idiot.
....and I suppose the others werent much better!
Even though this movie has quite a few famous actors in it, I have to say it was pretty boring. Brad Pitt's character was absolutely hillarious, I wish he was in more of the movie.
Yay, the Coen Brothers are at it again with another fine example of their trademark pithy pitch black wit. Frances McDormand is always a joy to watch and puts in a terrific performance as a middle age gym worker who sees the possibilities for shenanigans that will pay off when she discovers a CD Rom of Top Level secrets penned by the sacked CIA agent, John Malkovich. Brad Pitt must have loved playing her knuckle-headed partner in wannabe spy crime and does so with flawless non-judgemental fun. Neither of these superficial conspiracy theorists can see beyond the ???smarter??? one???s desire for cosmetic ???surgeries.??? Ever smooth George Clooney drips with delightful sexy charm and again shows us that what???s on the pretty surface is not always as it seems ??? and in this case, to his character???s deluded detriment. Sound too serious for fun?
That???s the Coen???s style...
This flick is such a riot ??? the ???head??? of the CIA seems just as confused as he should be. If the info discovered by a gym worker is a real threat to national security it should be monitored, but if merely stupidly dappling ???round the edges? Best it???s burned after reading... But which is the best way to burn? Burned in a pyre, or burned on disk for yet more unintended shenanigans? Sarah Lee may have prided herself on production of pastries layer upon layer upon layer... but as twits like McDormand and Pitt show us in this case, the pastry should not just be burned, but composted. Burn After Reading is testament to an information age plumped up by superficiality, yet to dig a little? Most is indeed worth burning.
Hats off to the Coen???s... they???re clever, and know how to have riotous fun in their loving digs at what???s what (and never as it seems) along the way. Sarah Lee???s promise never quite ???got??? what the Coen???s deliver; multi layered, yes; but sweeter with each layer after multiple viewings. Classic storytelling, and Highly Recommended.
Excellent darkly comic story. The characters are great and very well cast. The plot is terrific - instead of making wild leaps of association (as is common in Hollywood) it shows the accidental nature of events
if u can then avoid it... did nothing for me.. all charactors are good but individually !
One of the most stupid movies we have ever seen. Couldn't figure out why George Clooney and Brad Pitt would waste their time in a movie like this. Hugely dissapointed!
Another idiosyncratic offering from the Coen brothers which goes off in several directions and, as a result, doesn't quite pull it off. I found Clooney's performance annoying rather than amusing.
Some good dark humour, had me laughing in disbelief. Brad Pitt made this one for me.
One of the worst films ever seen. Stupid story line. You are sold on the cast to see it, but what a waist of time to sit through!
Typical Coen Brothers farce - lately it's been hard to tell one of their films from any other - highly over-rated
The thread of this movie is captured in the opening scenes where a CIA agent is being demoted while his manager says, "This doesn't have to be hard", meaning of course for himself. Distinct lives of insensitive deceit leave the CIA in the dust as fine performances by all of the principal actors carry the meagre plot and meaningful black humour to its stunned conclusion. Very fine.
I did like Brad Pitt before watching this movie - what a dumb move. did not enjoy this one.
Overall, a very average movie - at best. Some of it is funny, some a bit silly and unbelievable, but mostly it's a mental challenge trying to fill in the holes in the plot and connnecting the jumps in the story. All too much effort for little joy!
Coen films are usually wonderful! - this is the exception... Average.
Excellent movie - this will leave you with your mouth hanging open in unbelief - yes, people are really that shallow!
From the same team that did Fargo - it's even more hilarious!
Just brilliant!
HAHAHAHA not at all what I expected. Just a movie of hilarious mayhem. Pretty slow start, but once the ball gets rolling, its a great morbid comedy.
High profile cast - totally wasted on this movie.
Total waste of 1 1/2 hours which I'll never get back.
Don't waste your time or money.
This is a must-see movie! Both Brad Pitt and George Clooney are out of their usual roles and are just excellent. Frances Mcdormand ,Tilda Swinton, and John Malkovich are also outstanding. The story has many stories within the story and unexpected twists and turns. It has all the ingredients, drama, comedy, pathos - not to be missed!
a movie about uninteresting and fairly dorky people, how could it be any good, dont get burned.
i watched with some reticence, I had heard it was woeful. However I was pleasantly surprised. Good story, great acting and Brad Pitt is hilarious.
The Coen bros' are masters of the black comedy and drama mix, Brad Pitt steals the show in this film as a thick head idiot fitness trainer, his scenes are So funny, classic. Once the Coen's love the actor's performance they keep those same actor's, Clooney's character is a strange one, and Malkovich playing a crazy nut who is on the edge,( How many times has he done that role ?). Mcdormand ( once again in a Coen film ) is a simpleton who just wants a facelift and nip-tuck so she can find love.
For the most part the film work's well but seems to fizz-out after the half-way mark , when a character
departs. A bit too much swearing for me and be
prepared for a quick shock of violence, but no gory stuff.
Not quite sure what all the fuss was about...
Just seemed like a waste of time. Did not get into at all, the star is for John Malkovich and the great acting on his part.
boring.... waste time...!!!~ a bit disappointed!!!~
Just could not get into this.
I agree with "Fothogirl" - this film is pretty much a waste of time and is a dissapointment. I only gave it two stars because I love Brad Pitt and George Clooney... not in this movie though. Very dissapointed!!
This was great. The characters were SOOO funny (especially Brad Pitt - the idiot!! - funny!). Very different, very quirky - great acting by all and I can't wait to watch it again to pick up on any little bits I may have missed first time round.
Loved it!
This was great. The characters were SOOO funny (especially Brad Pitt - the idiot!! - funny!). Very different, very quirky - great acting by all and I can't wait to watch it again to pick up on any little bits I may have missed first time round.
Loved it!
Great movie. Fantastic acting. Brad Pitt is hilarious and John Malkovich brilliant. A must see!
A complete waste of time, useless !!
Loved it! Brad Pitt stole the show being a pumped air head. I could easily watch again. Another great!
My favorite movie for 2008. thigh slappingly funny.
The trailer really doesnt give the movie any credit.
I went expecting to be disappointed.Brilliant performances by all the cast. can't wait for the next Coen brothers
now where can i find myself one of those chairs HA
A dark comedy that twists and turns and keeps you hooked all the way through. Great characterisation and acting - plus the Coen Bros. in top form.
This film should have been called Burn After MAKING!!! What a load of rubbish!!!
Though much different from Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing, BAR could be titled the same, largely the result of the characters’ lack of understanding, communication and plain stupidity. It’s darkly, darkly funny with a few brief violent scenes à la Coen brothers. At the conclusion, a minor player asks, "Well, what did we learn here?” That some humans make idiotic decisions? We know that already! That we never really know other people including our partners? Yep! That life is pointless and human values are worthless. Hey-Zeus, I hope not! Despite its nihilistic nature BAR is likely to suck you into its whacky absurdist plot. Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich and George Clooney glow with squirm-in-your-seat performances.
great acting throughout
storyline is gripping and builds to a hilarious conclusion
a really solid Coen bros output
