Director: Clint Eastwood
Actors: Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep

World-traveling National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid and Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson aren't looking to turn their lives upside down. Each is at a point in life where expectations are behind them. Yet four days after meeting, they won't want to lose the love they've found. Academy Award winners Meryl STREEP (earning her 10th Oscar nomination for this performance) and Clint EASTWOOD (who also produces and directs) bring blazing starpower and powerful conviction to the beloved characters of Robert James Waller's rhapsodic bestseller of love, choice and consequence. "STREEP and EASTWOOD are so visually and spiritually right they seem to have walked right off the page," Entertainment Weekly proclaims. Also right are the small details and large emotions of once-in-a-lifetime love. With luck, a love like that happens to some of us sooner or later. For Robert and Francesca, it was later. And it was glorious.

I usually dont like romance movies but this is a classic. Lost myself completely in the story and the characters Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood made this movie one of the best I have seen.

I like these actors but the immoral storyline made me angry. How dare this frivolous housewife have an affair that could break up her marriage, just because she is bored and her life hasn't turned out the way she dreamed? Her husband is a lovely, strong provider who loves her, and her children love and need her. I don't understand why this is considered such a classic love story. Yeah, sure, sleep with whoever you want, as long as you're happy who cares who gets hurt?

Meryl Streep was her usual annoying self as she tried adopted an accent and tried to sound like she had an Italian accent. Why doesn't that woman ever just speak with her normal American accent. She ruined the film for me.

How does she do it? Meryl Streep that is, sounding for all the world like an Italian woman speaking English. And being of Italian origin wasn't even particularly necessary for the story, an emotional journey through a brief, beautiful and memorable love affair. The film is almost flawless except for the unrealistic depiction of the adult son and the perhaps too long kissing scenes.

It was strange seeing Clint Eastwood as a "nice" character - He did a good job though as usual. I don't generally like Meryl Streep as well but I liked her performance in this film.

Definitely one to see. Enjoyable and touching. Soulful. How it was done (or not done!) in the "old" days.

I've lost count of how many times I've viewed this movie and when I saw it on the Quickflix files I just had to view it one more time. As usual I cried buckets of tears at the end - this is a real classic.

Acting was superb, Meryl Streep superb! Just irked me that it dragged in parts. Maybe I was expecting Clint Eastwoods usual action !

This sensitive and well-written movie is another directing triumph for Clint Eastwood who also stars as the lover of a woman who must face the choice of abandoning her family to reach self-actualisement with Eastwood's character, or stay within the loving confines of her tradiitonal family. Difficult issues are addressed in a sensitive manner. The music complements the action and creates moods that recall simpler days. The directing, screenplay and interplay of characters make this one of Eastwood's better movies. Meryl Streep's performance as a warbride from Italy displaced into the stifling constraints of the US midwest in the 50s is rivetting. Altogether a brilliant and moving production.

Meryl Streep is a fantastic actress. Any movie she makes is a "must see". This movie is romantic. One is transported into the film and feels the pain of the lovers. Get out the tissues.

What a moving film, with exemplary performances by Streep and Eastwood. It may be slow to some viewers, but I believe the director saw this as necessary to create the powerful emotions between the two main characters - from the development of there mutual attraction to the emotional turmoil they experienced - they had me weeping. The electricity between Streep and Eastwood completed the scenario. Streep is a brilliant actress and what an infectious laugh she has. It was unusual to see Eastwood undertake a "softee" role, but he did it very well indeed - very seductive.

Random chance results in a meeting between two people at the crossroads of their lives - neither aware of this until the fateful day. Streep and Eastwood work hard to portray the feelings at work inside the characters and are mostly successful - the "parting" scene was almost to much for them - but watch on...
