Strong coarse language, sexual references and a sex scene

Director: Paul Feig
Actors: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa Mccarthy, Ellie Kemper, Chris O'dowd, Jon Hamm, Jill Clayburgh, Matt Lucas, Wendi Mclendon-Covey, Rebel Wilson

Producer Judd Apatow and director Paul Feig invite you to experience Bridesmaids. Kristen Wiig leads the cast as Annie, a maid of honour whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), and a group of colourful bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. Annie's life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian's maid of honour. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she'll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you'll go for someone you love.

The mostly Y-chromosome-free Bridesmaids feels like a call to arms for womankind; a message to Hollywood that ladies can bring "the funny" just as well as the men. Sure, it was directed by a dude - Paul Feig - but it was written by and stars a number of the most talented women working today. On the one hand, yay! Stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne have long deserved vehicles to showcase their talents, and here they’re finally afforded the opportunities their schlubby male contemporaries were offered a long time ago. On the other hand, do we really want these ladies - these smart, thoughtful, incisive ladies - lowering themselves to the level of us men? I don't want to see Nicole Holefcener directing The Hangover 3: Ladies in Shanghai. And I fear the day Lisa Cholodenko helms Sex Academy (and not just because that is the name of my own unproduced screenplay).

Wiig (that infinitely talented chameleon from Saturday Night Live) stars as Annie, a thirty something baker who had to shut down her cake store during the recession and hasn't been able to put her life back together since. When BFF Lillian (Rudolph, another great SNL alum) asks hear to be Maid of Honour at her upcoming nuptials, Annie is filled with joy ... and then plunges into a spiral of self-doubt at the thought of being left alone in her singledom. As her bridesmaidly duties mount, the pressure increases, and it doesn't help that Lillian's second best friend Helen (Byrne, in pitch perfect prissy princess mode) is trying to usurp the head bridesmaid position from her.

Before 'nam styles flashbacks of Bride Wars come flooding in, take solace in the knowledge that the war between Annie and Helen is mostly psychological in nature, and never outlandish. It also takes a backseat to the film's most important arc: the relationship between Annie and Lillian. Here's what I was referring to in the first paragraph. The Hangover may be able to provide you with raunchy laughs and get across the vague concept of 'mateship', but it takes a special sensibility (a woman's touch perhaps) to depict a legitimate friendship. Wiig co-wrote the screenplay with comic Annie Mumolo, and you can imagine them at coffee shops reminiscing about their own conflicts, improvising dialogue and scribbling it down. That's how real and true they feel. Wiig and Rudolph are both so funny and natural here as two friends drawn together and drifting apart at the same time. They share meandering conversations that would be left on the cutting room floor in any other production. Feig and producer Judd Apatow - whose fingerprints are all over this thing - know that these throwaway moments are the emotional truth at the heart of this story.

If Bridesmaids has a problem, it is that Feig, taking inspiration from his mentor Apatow, lets the camera linger a little too long at the end of each scene. I'm not referring to those beautiful sequences in which Annie and Lillian just hang out and bond; rather, the comedy set pieces that just run out of steam. I understand the problem – when you hire all these funny people, there will just be too much excellent content to cut back on. But comedies are made in the edit suite, and many of the jokes outstay their welcome (the scene where Annie and Helen compete to make the best speech at an engagement party springs to mind). The film feels like the dreaded "extended cut" of comedies that arrives on DVD; padded out with 15 minutes of unnecessary footage, with many of the jokes now feeling deflated and flabby. Also, there are a couple of sequences that seem crowbarred-in, such as when the ladies are depicted like classic Apatovian dudes, or when they get drunk and vomit on one another. These moments ring so false compared to the more understated and natural scenes that take place elsewhere. It's not that women can't act as grossly and recklessly as guys, but the film comes so close to greatness by freshly depicting female relationships on screen, the bit where they all get food poisoning and mess themselves feels like a step in the wrong direction.

But for those minor quibbles, there are a hundred other great elements worth recommending. The other bridesmaids are all wonderful, including the under-utilised Ellie Kemper as an innocent Disney princess-like newlywed and Wendi McLendon-Covey as a bored housewife with a nasty streak. Best of all is Melissa McCarthy who absolutely steals the show as Lillian's soon to be sister-in-law; a rough around the edges and physically imposing government agent with a giant, loving heart. Although there aren’t a lot of them, the guys in the cast get to make funny too: Jon Hamm chews the scenery as a cheating scoundrel who booty calls Annie for evenings of terrible, discordant sex, and Chris O'Dowd gets a nice romantic turn as a kindly cop who takes a fancy to our heroine. He's the most adorable thing in the film - and this is a picture that features a bunch of puppies all dressed in puppy tuxedos.

Although the ‘Superbad-for-ladies’ and ‘reverse I Love You Man comparisons are apt, Bridesmaids shares more in common with Nicole Holofcener's Please Give and Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World. Each follows characters, specifically women, at a crossroads in their life, and they're asked to reconsider their existence in the context of their relationships. What defines them? Their friendships? Their jobs? Their hobbies? In the end, the best any of these characters can hope for is to be comfortable with themselves, and be grateful for their companions. Like those other films, Bridesmaids depicts this struggle and eventual resolution with humour, pathos and heart. The Hangover and its sequel meanwhile ends with a pictures of Zach Galifianakis getting a BJ from an old woman in an elevator and Ed Helms being subjected to a variety of bizarre sex acts. Don’t get me wrong: that's funny. But ladies, don't feel as if that is the benchmark you should be reaching for. Look to Bridesmaids instead.

Simptomatic of today's feminine rush to be as rude as the teenage BOYS stuff. This fails to be funny and just relies on crudity with no acting to speak of and very little in the way of character exploration or story.

Had its funny moments, but they were few and far between. Most of the charactors came across as unlikable especially the main girl. It was crude and grosse and made my stomach churn more than once. The only good thing through out the movie was the appearance of Roy from "The IT Crowd" good to see a funny british comedian making it America.

This was often crude and only very occasionally funny. It starts with a sex scene and I couldn't allow my 15-yo daughter to watch it. The bridal shop scene is truly a very low point. However, the luminous Rose Byrne and the fabulous Chris O'Dowd kept me hooked to the very Hollywood end. Kristen Wiig in the lead was terrific although she reminded me eerily of Rosanna Arquette. What is great about Wiig is that she makes a really unlikeable character likeable and forgivable. It's a B-grade feel good movie for chicks.

I only saw this because SO MANY people told me how great it was, and I valued the opinion of a couple of those people. Everyone raved about what a comic genius Kristen Wiig was. I dunno... maybe they really enjoyed it because they saw it at the cinema with friends. That group viewing experience can sometimes influence you. I was underwhelmed. On the one hand, there were moments that distinguished it from your average American comedy - not everybody is unbelievably gorgeous, and the scenes with Irish comedian Chris O'Dowd were enjoyable. On the other hand, at least half the movie is utterly ridiculous - unrealistic people, unrealistic situations. And I'm sorry - I've never found vomiting or diarrohea even remotely amusing. Not absolutely terrible. Definitely not great.

This well balanced film keeps big laugh comedy and big heart story simmering throughout. The elements of the film dealing with Annie's character and her journey are earnest and engaging and intertwined with the comedy. Performances throughout of just the right subtlety support this. Another movie where the producers & writers couldn't decide what they wanted to say. If it was about friendship then why did the best friend disappear for long sections of the film, if it was about selfishness/lack of commitment in relationships then that story started interestingly but ran aground due to a lack of depth in the writing - or should that be due to a lack of commitment by the producers. Some nice sight & word gags thru out couldn't save it.

Problematic? Sure, but as far as these kinds of films go this is definitely on the good side. The characters are quite likable and the gross-out style of the humor stands out and the editing is really good. It's cliche, but it isn't anything to get too upset about. Bridesmaids is a pretty well done movie and I'd say you should check it out.

It's like most comedies, unless you see them as soon as they come out at the movies, or hire them on DVD right away, your expectations are let down when you wait too long to see them. Sadly, this is what happened for me in watching this movie. I feel I should have gotten much more out of it then I did! Sure I got some good laughs, but unfortunately they were too far & few between! I feel Melissa McCarthy was definately the show stealer in this movie, she was brilliant.

Too much conflict between realistic dark human comedy and just plain stupid drawn out scenes left me in two minds about this film. It could have been a brilliant drama/comedy if it had stayed "real " and not tried to be all things to all people. The acting was fantastic and even the script was pretty good but somewhere in there the American need for Mommas Apple Pie scmaltz kept sneaking back in. ie, a happy ending was always going to be the order of the day. However, in every respect it was always 4 stars ahead of it's male counterpart "The Hangover". Definitely worth a watch.... and Kristen wasn't "slopy" at all Gerry C.

Interesting story line and the traliers appealed. Stay away! Borning, bland, cheesy, loooooong, sooooo long. Dreadful film. Actress for main character was so badly cast - she looked tired, bland, messy and slopy. Order something else and save yourself the hour and half you'll never get back.

Genius! Thank God for Kristen Wiig 'help me I'm poor'. Certainly Melissa McCarthy has her moments but this is Wiig's show. From her quick escape via a moving electronic gate to her trying to push over a chocolate fountain. The women is funny! Kudos to Rose Bryne for playing the straight women and HELLO Chris O'Dowd - where have you been hiding! I can't even believe they managed to convince Wilson Phillips to cameo at the end. You've gotta be a brave women to ask that lot to make fools of themselves.

Sex in the city style, stuff up everything with the all about me thing and then feel sorry for me when it all turns to crap and all comes good regardless of how you have treated others, little bit boring and not a good message for young women & relationship values, for which this was targeted. Some funny moments all the same and was a big hit at the cinema. stictly girls stuff.

Great fun movie to watch. There are many laughs throughout and some of the humour is pretty outrageous. It crosses over into some areas that have traditionally been the domain of "guy type" movies and shows that the gals can be just a gross at times as the fellas can be. Some subtle jokes and observations are also interwoven between the obvious laughs, making Bridesmaids worth your viewing time.

When it comes to Hollywood comedies, so many have ridiculous, eccentric characters and/or crazy situations that would never happen in real life. Bridesmaids borrows all this stuff. Then some comedies are genuine, clever & funny flicks, (Crazy Stupid Love, Easy A), while some are downright stupid, (Four Holidays, Grown ups, Meet the Fockers). Bridesmaids is right there in the middle. Kristen Wiig (Annie) gets herself in the craziest situations, and causes havoc on a big scale on the way to her best friend's wedding. It is a entertaining chick flick with enough laughs along the way to deserve a 3 star rating.

I was surprisingly disappointed with this movie. I'd been dying to see it for ages and was prepared to add it to my favourite's list. Unfortunately, it was far off. I guess I was expecting a hilarious comedy about a group or bridesmaids and bride who have a wild ride before the wedding, but instead, it's emotional and about feeling jealous and replaced and all that. The emotions commonly present don't match with the 'comedy' that they're trying to achieve. Feels like a very confused movie.

I found this movie really disappointing, maybe I was expecting too much as I had been told how funny it was. It did have quite a few funny moments, however I found these mostly infantile, and the almost 'slap-stick' style of comedy a bit ho hum. The crude forms of humour seemed to be trying to make up for the lack of a good story line, and clever dialogue. I guess I would recommend it to a few young girlfriends having a night in, who want a bit of a laugh.

Judd Apatow has his fingerprints all over this one. Kristen Wiig is fabulous as the hapless but sweet maid of honour and is ably supported by some great characters and dialogue, particulary Megan. It's a bit of a Hangover movie, so don't think this is a chick flick. It's rude, crude and very, very funny. Better than Hangover 2 for sure. Lots of laughs.
