Actors: Marsha Mason, Naveen Andrews, Martin Henderson, Aishwarya Rai, Daniel Gillies, Alexis Bledel, Nitin Chandra Ganatra, Anupam Kher, Namrata Shirodkar, Anu Malik, Indira Varma, Nitin Ganatra, Meghna Kothari, Peeya Rai Chowdhary, Nadira Babbar, Ashanti

In Bride and Prejudice, East meets West in a dazzlingly entertaining fusion of Hollywood and Bollywood unlike any interpretation of the classic novel that you have seen.

The framework of the original is still very much in evidence, but the story is re-told with a spectacular splash of colour, and features razzle-dazzle song and dance numbers while it globe trots across India, London and LA.

Cast as Lalita Bakshi – the counterpart to Austen’s Lizzie Bennet – is Bollywood superstar, Aishwarya Rai. Lalita is one of four daughters whose parents (Nadira Babbar and Anupam Kher) are trying to marry off. The arrival in their town of millionaire, Mr Balraj (Naven Andrews) and his best friend, American hotel heir, Will Darcy (Martin Henderson) sets off the romantic entanglements and misunderstandings. Lalita’s sister, Jaya (Namrata Shirodkar) falls for Balraj and there’s immediate attraction between Darcy and Lalita, which is defused for him by her outspokenness and for her because she finds him cold and aloof.

I tried to like bollywood as much as I tried to like the Pride and Prejudice parody but it didn't work for me. Colourful and light but I still don't love Mr Darcy

If you enjoy musicals and like the Bollywood style of dance and music then this movie is a must see. An uptight rich American gets taken to India with a friend to attend a wedding. Boy meets girl, girl thinks boy is a tool but of course true love wins out in the end. One thing I did notice about this Bollywood movie is there is not kissing and no sex. It makes a pleasant change to watch a love story unfold in this way. We really enjoyed this movie, it was easy to watch, you didn't have to think about it much and the dancing and fun in the movie was infectious.

This movie could have been cut down to 30 mins, it took too long to get to the point and it was very predictable.

I absolutely love this movie. Have watched it over and over and sometimes in the one weekend. Love the dancing, costumes and singing. The lead actress is a very beautiful girl. Recently saw her in another movie and loved that as well.

I found it interesting to see how Pride and Prejudice translated to the Indian screen but it didn't have the tension or the sublety of the original. I like musicals but I wasn't really taken with this one. Not enough of a sense of discovery for one the female lead.

Loved the dancing - just like a classic Hollywood movie where the actors just burst into song and dance whenever they feel like it. Nice movie and plenty of eye candy for both the boys and the girls.

I actually thought this movie would be boring and typical from the commercials, but boy was I wrong. It was really fun and entertaining, despite the heavy accents (just turn on the subtitles if you have trouble catching everything they're saying!). Honestly, once it was over I wanted to watch it again...and a confession, I did go back and watch some of the better songs/dances :)

Obviously I just don't get into the whole "Bollywood" thing. I had looked forward to watching this as the previews looked fab but found it boring, overdone and monotonous. If you don't like people bursting into ridiculous songs in movies don't get this one.

Very colourful, nice scenery, good-looking people, and no swearing, sex or drugs- these are its best features. On the other hand, the story was mostly in English, hardly any Indians of colour were featured, and generally it was like a soap opera with European looking people, whose only Indian features were Indian clothes, living in an Indian palace, an accent of sorts, and olive skin. Aishwarya Rai, (a Brahmin actress who looks like a Middle Eastern version of Romy Schneider) stars opposite Heath Ledger's Kiwi friend Martin Henderson (he does a good fake American accent). The story is complete with an English villain who wants to get a young girl pregnant, and a greedy, predatory Mataji. The film appears to be made for young rich Indian girls, who want to marry a multi-millionaire American. If you like English language films starring angry Indian women and desperate young men who love them, e.g. 'Bend it like Beckham' and 'Monsoon Wedding,' you'll probably like this one. If you want to see a more realistic India, 'Bandit Queen' and even 'Gandhi' would be better choices.

A "feel good" movie with plenty of colour and dancing and manage to weave a story in between, look on it as a bit of life and humour, not Bollywood.

I won't go too much into details. But if you love Grease, you will certainly love this one! Modern musical Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice. Aishwarya Rai is so beautiful and perfect match with Martin Henderson, both charming.

My first Bollywood - where have I been? I suspect a good first choice with attractive cast, plentiful colour, light humour, good singing, interesting dancing and low level morality. The extras provide a look at potential alternative edits and are goodviewing in themselves. Only detractor from overall effect was li p s ync....

Do not miss this movie. Don't worry if Bollywood normally turns you off. The Bollywood bits are much less fake than real Bollywood, if you get my meaning. This movie is a delight from beginning to end. Any cringing you do will be because you realise how much less talent is involved in Hollywood movies.
