The birth of the beats of Brazil! In Rio in the late 1800s, Brazilian musicians started to blend European melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and a melancholic interpretation of the native Indians’ music: Choro was born. Uniquely Brazilian, it was the first musical expression of Brazil’s identity as a cultural melting pot, and led directly to Samba and later, Bossa Nova. Still popular today, BRASILEIRINHO traces the roots, practitioners and liveliness of THE modern tropical sound.

I came across this DVD by chance: I was looking for films about Brazil and the bossa nova. Choro is a style of music which precedes both samba and bossa nova. There are some excellent guitar, tambourine and acrylic (!) clarinet performances. Some great footage of Rio de Janeiro. It was inspiring to see the music performed not just by professional musicians but also by amateurs aged from 8 to 80 from all walks of life. Highly recommended for fans of Latin sounds who prefer the music more authentic and less commercialised.

A fairly closely followed account of a group of musicians attempting to revive the "choro" musical tradition in Brazil. OK if you're into that kind of thing.
