Mild violence, sexual references and coarse language

Director: Rachel Perkins
Actors: Ernie Dingo, Geoffrey Rush, Magda Szubanski, Missy Higgins, Jessica Mauboy, Tom Budge, Dan Sultan, Ningali Lawford, Deborah Mailman, Rocky Mckenzie

It's the summer of 1969 and young Willie (Rocky McKenzie) is filled with the life of the idyllic old pearling port Broome, in the North of Western Australia - fishing, hanging out with his mates, and when he can, his girl Rosie (Jessica Mauboy). However his mother Theresa (Ningali Lawford) has great hopes for him and she returns him to the religious mission in Perth for further schooling. After being punished by Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush) for an act of youthful rebellion, Willie runs away from the mission. But to where... he's too ashamed to go home, it will break his mother's heart. Down on his luck he meets an old fella, who he calls ‘Uncle' Tadpole (Ernie Dingo), and together they con a couple of hippies, Annie ('Missy' Higgins) and Slippery (Tom Budge), into taking them on the 2,500 km journey through spectacular landscape back to Broome. Willie learns the hard and funny lessons he needs to get home, all the while pursued by Father Benedictus. Arriving back in Broome, Willie wins the girl, convinces his mother that Broome is the place he should be, and discovers that the father he never knew he had is his journeyman companion all along - ‘Uncle' Tadpole.

Bran Nue Dae is so spectacularly cheerful and effervescent it has successfully wrestled my practical criticisms and deemed them irrelevant. Rachel Perkins’ latest film has bound and gagged the sensible reviewer within me, leaving only an enthusiastic Aussie eager to heap praise on this rapturous love-fest. Even as I note my glee and brush aside any complaints, I can acknowledge that I perhaps have been placed under this movie-musical’s hypnotic power. But you know what? Anything this fun deserves a free pass. I could discuss an awkward narrative arc and lack of dramatic tension all I want, but it wouldn’t please readers as much as Bran Nue Dae is sure to do.

This is the first feature film adaptation of Jimmy Chi’s groundbreaking play of the same name. Set in 1969, it tells the story of an Aboriginal boy named Willie (Rocky McKenzie) who wants nothing more than to be a good son to his mother (Ningali Lawford), spend his days in Broome fishing with friends and to romance the lovely Roxanne (Jessica Mauboy). Of course, being a good son to his mother is in direct conflict to those other desires of his. She wants him to be a priest, lest he succumb to the dangers of alcohol abuse. He reluctantly leaves Broome and heads to school in the big city under the cruel tutelage of Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush). However, his desire for Roxanne (who is already being courted by a rockabilly named Lester – played by Dan Sultan) proves too great.

Willie escapes from school and enlists the aid of his homeless and drunken Uncle Tadpole (Ernie Dingo) to help him make his way home. Of course, Tadpole’s help amounts to little more than stealing Willie’s money for booze and throwing himself in front of a combi van as a means of bumming a lift. You can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family, right? You don’t know the half of it. As Willie and Tadpole team up with hippies Annie (Missy Higgins) and Slippery (Tom Budge) on an epic road trip, they are tailed by Father Benedictus at every turn. Also, they never stop singing. Have I not mentioned that yet? Oh, my bad. Yes, pretty much everyone sings all the time during this adventure. Hence its classification as ‘a musical’.

And what a musical. Perkins can't quite seem to stage the musical sequences in any memorable way (in fact, many of them come off quite clumsily), but you can’t deny the greatness of Chi’s songs (co-written back in the late 1980’s with his band Kuckles). Each of the actors throw themselves wholeheartedly into the production numbers, evoking that same sense of elated fun that radiated off the screen in Adam Shankman’s 2007 hit Hairspray.

Mauboy, Higgins and Sultan have all been cast for their supreme musical prowess; when they sing, the screen is on fire and their charisma is undeniable. However, perhaps their casting has come at the price of solid performances, as they rarely evolve beyond one dimension in their non-singing moments. Often it feels as if they’re trying to stifle grins, so thankful they are to be involved with the project. McKenzie fares best and emerges as one of the most impressive (and downright) lovable young Australian actors. It’s no small feat to hold the screen the way he does as more and more cartoonish characters are introduced, especially considering he has only one musical number to show off with. Rush and Dingo are the real scene-stealers, the former hamming it up beautifully and the latter giving genuine texture and richness to a character that could have been a tired stereotype.

At this point, I have to give the critic in me some air and let him discuss some gripes. As I mentioned previously, the stilted staging of the musical sequences does occasionally dull the effect of the great songs, particularly in the film’s final musical number (which is pretty much a disaster). Also, there is little propelling the plot forward and almost no forward momentum; reasonable complaints for a road movie. Again though, these criticisms don’t amount to much after spending eighty minutes with such joyful company. It’s a pleasure to see such an enjoyable Australian film. Maybe I’m just gushing because I’m a Perth boy and I was flattered that my hometown was referred to as “the big city”.

Terrible!! Was really looking forward to this, going by the reviews I've read, but I was just sooo disappointed. Acting terrible, very thin plot and just a general waste of time. Certainly wouldn't recommend.

Light and cheerful movie about a young Aboriginal man torn between two lifestyles, ie between the traditional Aboriginal and stulted European lifestyles. Some important indigenous themes are touched upon, eg stolen generations, alcoholism, racism, but only briefly, and the film cannot stay serious for long without bursting into song at the slightest opportunity. The main song, about being Aboriginal, is priceless. The characters are one-dimensional and the plot is simplistic, but it doesn't really matter in this warm-hearted family movie.

What a shame. This film's sensational cinematography in my beautiful state was about the only thing it had going for it. As a stageplay it was infinitely more subtle and pointed, the songs became painfully ironic and the performances were better. On stage they could clearly afford to cast performers who were actors first and singers second which made for a much more powerful experience. On film... They rolled out every aboriginal 'done good' and then talked them into demeaning themselves as perfomers and their culture in the name of 'art'. They cut so much of the meaning from the priginal script that the irony of the lyrics was totally lost and it just became a confusing, badly performed mess. Aboriginal gospel choirs in the northwest, really? Dingo and Rush are seasoned, experienced performers so there's no excuse for their cliched portrayals and as for everyone else... (I'm so sorry Dan Sultan who I love and adore but OMG...) A country has to be able to talk outloud about an issue before you can start working with parody as subtle as Bran Nue Dae was written to be. Taking it from the carefully controlled and intensely personal environment of stage to the open global market of film has not done this film, a potentially powerful message or all the performers in it any favours at all. Such a disappointment.

Interesting concepts for an Australian musical. Brushes lightly on the dilemmas and tribulations between Indiginous and Anglo Saxon Australians. No holds barred exposing the good, the bad and ugly of our culture that is often hidden or covered up. Well done !!!

Disappointing. Watched 1/2 hour in, but it had no vibrancy to hold the song and plot interplay together. The male lead was not strong enough to hold interest and Rush could only do so much! Not from a lack of loving the genre either!

I think I may have added this to my queue because part of it was set in Broome, where I really want to go on a holiday. I'm not really a fan of musicals, so I found this was a bit hard to watch. There are some tongue in cheek comments aimed at white people in some of the songs - which I found amusing. Some well known Aussies amongst the actors. Interesting how some of the Indigenous actors who normally speak with an "Aussie accent" put on an indigenous accent for the movie.

If you go into this movie with a distaste for Australian film, this won't change your mind. In fact, it will probably reinforce your view. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either, and that was probably because it was helped by the presence of Geoffrey Rush. I thought the rest of the cast was pretty average. It was just watchable for me.

I don't know why there was so much praise for this movie, let alone how it managed to get a PG rating. Parents be warned: this is NOT suitable for kids! A lot of coarse language and sexual content! E.g. the condom tree scene, the song about "Sowing seeds and poking her hole" and Ernie Dingo doing that 'finger demonstration' of what men and women do. It seems quite degrading to indigenous people to be sterotyped as drunken no-hopers and watch them dance and sing the words: "There's nothing I would rather be than to be an Aborigine and watch you take my precious land away". I found it very offensive.

So bad. I had to laugh at some of the lyrics they were so ridiculous. Very predictable storyline. I got this for the family to watch but it is too lewd for anyone under 15. Dan Sultan sings about wanting to poke Jessica Mauboy in her hole. Debra Mailman likes to hang out at the condom tree - yes its a big tree with condoms hanging from the branches, classy.

Great fun, catchy songs and adequate performances from the younger cast members, suitably bolstered by the more experienced performers such as Geoffrey Rush, Ernie Dingo and Deborah Mailman. The film challenges the cliched Aborignal sterotypes in a tongue in cheek way as well as giving a glimpse into the culture. The locations in and around Broome are magnificent. Not too long, just right for a nice afternoon's viewing.

This is really bad. When you watch this, you realise that the aboriginal people in Australia have no hope of ever retaining their culture. They no longer exist. It's like those awful Hollywood movies where the blacks are assimilated, never to be black again. Let's not talk about what really happened to their culture or what we did to them. The white man wins, and the white man rules forever. Uncle Tom? Ummmm, Uncle Blackfella? Don't worry, mate, we'll just make you look like us and noone will know the difference.

What a fun movie! Bran Nue Dae was based on the hit musical from the 90's of the same title, by Jimmy Chi. The music, colours and costumes are fantastic. This movie highlights the humour and strength of Australia's indigenous people. It was honest, feeling, and optimistic at the same time. It made me laugh out loud.

The problem with the film is that it has a lot of grit and edge that was in the stageplay. Also some of the humour seems to be lost eg the wild drive with the hippy pair. One of the best songs "Is you or is you not my woman" by Ernie Dingo is not in the film. Shame really as the conversion to film should have been closer to the stageplay. Don't know why they changed the mission from Lutheran to Catholic. A reason why the stageplay was so successful was that it was about Jimmy Chi's actual life ecperiences.

After the rave review it got from the Quickflix critic and knowing some people who worked on the film I was looking forward to Bran Nue Dae. But heed this warning - unless you really, really, really love musicals forget it! This was one big song from start to end without a story to tie it together. I fast forwarded through most of the songs and to be honest there wasn't much left! Half a star from me (if that was possible).

Took to long to get going and not really enough in this to keep me interested. It was a short movie at just over an hour and not really worth a rental. The last five minutes of the movie and the bits with Ernie Dingo were the best, without him, it would have been a total disaster rather than just a mediocre flick.

Could've been a really good movie with a decision to make it a comedy or serious story. A few songs are misplaced and not needed. Good performance from Ernie Dingo, over acting from a few of the more well knowns. An advancement of Aussie films, I donk think so.
