The Bostonians tells the story of a love triangle between two women and a man. Olive (Vanessa Redgrave) is a shy but ardent New England suffragette who teaches her cause to Verena, a gifted but naive young girl. The two become passionately involved with the cause and each other. Also in love with Verena, however, is Basil (Christopher Reeve), a lawyer who strenuously opposes their feminist cause but has equally strong desires of his own.

Beautiful Merchant-Ivory film - interesting (& sad) to see a young Christopher Reeve pre accident. Enjoyed it very much.

Films like this don't come along that often. More's the pity. I can't imagine James novel being better done. The sets and scenes were like a long parade of paintings from the era. Superb acting (apart from Reeves whose character is underdeveloped) brought out the complexityof the position of women's struggles for equality. Redgrave's character is not appealing, but makes one realise just how important the cause was (and still is). One of Merchant Ivory's best.
