This is a genuinely funny movie. Really sends up some aspects of American culture though and not necessarily in a kind way, so Americans probably don't find it all that funny.
funny movie big sascha baron cohen fan good movie
Sacha Baron Cohen is a brilliant comedian who is adept at getting people to show their true colours and then make fools of themselves. He journeys across America filming real people in unscripted ad hoc situations. This movie has many hilarious moments, but a couple of scenes (particularly the nude fight in the hotel) are absolutely cringeworthy. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some people showed him kindness, thinking he really was from Kazakhstan, but he just made fun of them. Also the Kazakhstan scenes were shot in a small poor town in Romania called "Glod" and the local people on camera were furious to find out later that he portrayed them as simple dumb peasants (although that's probably what they are).
The biggest thing you need to remember when you're watching Borat, is that very little of this movie is scripted per se, and most of the individuals portrayed aren't actually actors, or so much as "clued in" on what's going on.
When you think about it in that light, the entire movie basically becomes an 83-minute-long episode of Candid Camera (or, perhaps more appropriately, Punk'd), and while the unabashed, blatantly irreverent brand of humour may not appeal to all, there's certainly a modicum of intelligence to the conception and delivery that may take some a little bit of reflection to appreciate.
There's no shortage of ingenuity and genuine hilarity to be found, albeit at the expense of the average unsuspecting citizen, so put aside those inhibitions and it'll make you laugh. It'll make you cringe. It'll probably even make you a little uncomfortable just watching it from time to time. Look past all the controversy, and you might just be able to appreciate why critics have been calling Borat one of the funniest comedies of its time.
One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Turned it off half way through. SO not funny at all
Weird. Not a normal type of person I can assure you.
im suspecting many of you don't relise this is a documentary about prejudice, the character of borat is there to bring that out of people. he exposed the nature of the rodeo people he said "May George Bush a-drink the blood of every single man, woman, and child of Iraq.
the crowd cheers wildly after that
then
Borat: May you destroy their country so that for the next thousand years not even a single lizard will survive in their desert.
still half the crowed cheered after he said that
they only started getting angry he he sung the Kazakhstan national anthem.
this is a brilliant documentary and comedy. not only does it show the sickening brutality of allot of people but has some very funny dialog.
Borat: What kind of dog is this?
Zookeeper: It's a tortoise.
Borat: Is it a cat in a hat?
Zookeeper: No... it's a tortoise in a shell.
you cant tell me that isent funny.
And if you know your going to be offended or embarrassed dont watch it, im not offended by 2 naked men wrestling. if you are maybe you should examine your sexuality and work out why something so harmless is so objectionable to you. the incest part is also just a harmless joke, its not his real sister so what is there to be offended by?
all i can say about the retard jokes is toughen up, i understand that its a sensitive issue to allot of people who have retarded relatives but its funny, its impossible to make a movie without offending somebody.
Lastly this movie is definitely not offensive to jews because sacha boron cohen comes from a jewish family, hes making fun or himself.
Very unique, bloody funny and couldn't stop saying Borat lines after ..
Cleverly written. Had me laughing most of the film.
Not as funny as I thought it would be. A little on the silly side.
Liked it the first time, don't find this humour funny anymore, will watch bruno to see if any better :(
Must see at least once - very funny.
Absolute total rubbish. Hated it. Could not get into this movie at all. Didnt waste my time watching all of it!
There were some funny bits but otherwise a waste of time. The most terrible comedy I've seen so far.
I really, really wanted to turn this movie off but just couldn't - its so vulgar and embarrassing but I still couldn't turn it off! I reckon I would even watch it again just to remember exactly how terrible the movie is...
The jokes grow old very fast. It does attempt to shock but just plays on toilet humor. If you laugh at fart jokes or if people often let you know how immature you are then this is for you.
This was possibly the worst movie I've ever seen, although can't say for sure as I stopped it after about 5 mins. Absolute rubbish.
To try-hard and vulgar to be enjoyable. Has its moments but ultimately, a waste of time.
Even for the fairly open-minded this film is quite offensive - make sure you have a strong constitution and like your comedy in your face!
Borat is best served in very small doses - to endure a whole movie of him is too much to bear. A lot of fuss about nothing. I hated it.
This is definitely a boy movie, as they degrade women to objects and that scene in the hotel room with his producer/friend... Ewwwww!
Has got some really good moments though, I'd say the first half is definitely worth watching, then skip the next few chapters and get to the last one, just to know how it all ends up.
Honestly, you shouldn't trust anyone else's opinion, this is the type of movie you can only decide for yourself if you'll love or hate it.
Such a laugh - and quite a different form of humour !!!!
I'm an intellectual elitist when it comes to humour. Having seen the shorts for this, I expected to be seriously disappointed. It was cast as a mash-up of dodgy slapstick and simple toilet humour, peppered with candid camera and "funniest home video"... which it is, but it's also infused with an extra layer of subtle wordplay (facilitated by the fake language barrier), situation comedy and a strong sense of "ha ha, only serious" that makes it worth watching.
I agree with the person who said it would be a comedy classic if you just removed the 10% of dumb bits - but I'd lay high odds that my 10% would turn out to be different to your 10%. ;)
Yes, there's a mix of all sorts of humour involved - yes there will probably be bits you love and bits you hate - but that means there's at least something for everyone.
In the end, Borat is not only funny, but also intriguing, eye-opening and in some cases quite confronting - some of the comments of those mid-western rodeo people are downright horrifying! I am in awe that he managed to stand up in front of so many bloodthirsty red-necks and take the absolute piss out of them... and not only *not* get killed, but have them cheer him on while he did it.
Absolutely hilarious only confirms why we make fun of our american friends
thought the movie was quite funny
Excellent comedy..laughed all the way through..loved it
not an ali fan at all, but found this movie very watchable, and humourous!
Borat, a comedy classic. Cohen is incredibly talented and extremely funny in a role that at once makes the viewer cringe and laugh. The scene with "Pardmela Anderson" is just a cack. I'd definitely watch it again. Worth the time.
My son recommended this one to me. It is very silly in places as well as a bit sad. Very tounge in cheek look at life in America through Borat's eyes. His obession with Pamela Anderson is a little sad but is very funny to see his take on Bay Watch at the end with him running along a beach in a classic red swimming costume. A bit rude and shocking in places but worth a look. Not to be taken too seriously.
very funny, not for kids though too rude.
I didnt find it funny, showing Americans up for being small minded and quite racist is something most people I know are already aware of.
As funny as a hatful of monkeys..Kazakhstan is the place for a holiday if people like Borat live there!!...a ripsnorting rib tickler if u don't mind the direct toilet humour for example: "what do I do with this @#$!@#" Borat asks his host holding up a bag of his excrement!!!..One for the boys...watch it!!
I have a pretty distorted sense of humour. This is not as funny as I once thought it would be.
Very silly movie. We didn't enjoy it at all.
Bit over the top for my taste but having had so much hype, was interested to see for myself
This is a movie that you're either going to love or hate. Watching it away from the hype surrounding it's release I didn't find it particularly great. It had some funny moments but mostly it just made me cringe.
Some funny moments, but not really up to all the hype.
This movie is absolutely hilarious. Bit rude in places but worth seeing.
I hated it, the most, politically, racially and sexually incorrect movie I have ever endured. Borat get a job.
This was funny even if at times very uncomfortable.
Borat is the funniest movie I have seen in years. It has been a long time since I have left a cinema knowing that I had missed a great deal of the movie because I was laughing too much. Even now, I can’t help but laugh again and again when I recall some of the scenes. Sacha Baron Cohen is without doubt a comic genius and a pretty brave man for making this movie, which must have involved putting his personal safety on the line numerous times. I understand the police became involved around 50 times during the making of the movie. Aggravating New Yorkers on the subway or making fun of the American national anthem at a rodeo is akin to Steve Irwin picking up deadly snakes by the tail in the wild. The creatures that Cohen disturbed may be even more venomous. The rodeo scene was the funniest for me, closely followed by the evangelists, although they were funny already without any help from Cohen. This is a movie that can be enjoyed as a series of outrageous toilet jokes or as a highly sophisticated satire on cultural and social issues. Take your pick, either way it defies review and has to be seen to be believed.
Too crass for me. I cringed more than I laughed - would have preferred it to be the other way around.
Cringefully funny! One of the only movies I repeatedly snort in. Although the ball scene is a little much...
Some bits were hilarious others not so. The funniest bit was the scene where Borat and his assistant had a fight in the nude. Leave that to your imagination!
Wow! What a classic. Bag full of laughs and it makes me wonder how on earth they got away with some of it. Quite silly but real funny.
The funniest film I have seen since 'Dumb and Dumber'! Will definitely be renting it again in the future.
I was amazed this movie got released very slow sometimes funny.
This movie tended to drag on but has some incredibly funny things to have a laugh at.
Not funny and maybe even offensive.
Definitely not for the easily offended or the politically correct amongst us. It had me in stiches in some parts more than others. A very funny film.
This movie was better than I expected it to be. It had its funny moments and a lot of cringe-worthy ones. I feel this movie's greatest achievement is showcasing American failure to adhere to it's own moral values.
Uck!! Not at all impressed!
Worth watching for it's sheer political incorrectness - you almost feel guilty laughing at some of the stuff. I didn't mind this to begin with, but after the naked chase through the hotel it became really tedious to watch and I was glad when it finally ended (and it isn't even a very long movie!)
Totally crazy! I loved it, how he didn't get arrested in the U.S.A.for some of the stunts he got up to I'll never know!
Funny in bits. Need a special sense of humour to appreciate it. Definitely worth watching.
honestly, i was unable to sit through the whole movie, although my family enjoyed it- males what can i say?
In your face world! This the wildest movie. Most people that I spoke to about this movie said I would be disapointed. I would have been if I wxpected a clean society acceptable movie. Yes discusting could explain it, but that is how its advertised anyway. Best acting from Pamela eva, maybe directers should take her by surprise.
only funny in one or two bits --not my type of humour really
very average, not as good as the critics have said. Some funny bits. more dull than not.
Can't say i laughed at all. Stupid movie.
I was almost p***ng my pants over the nude scene. It was so funny that it wasn't didn't seem the least bit gay or disgusting. Hilarious.
very amusing and politically incorrect
Shock humour doesn't impress me, so I did not enjoy movie.
My wife thought it was too stupid to watch and unfotunately she was right
Stupid - can I give it zero?
Don't watch this if you are easily offended by racial stereotypes. Also don't watch it if you are offended by really fat naked men!! Otherwise worth a couple of laughs.
Few laughs.Big load of rubbish
There are images in this movie that I will never ever be able to erase from my head! Offensive but hilarious.
I was expecting this to be funny. It's not! It's not even satirical. If you want satire that's sometimes good watch the Chaser boys on ABC. This movie is just painful to watch and a waste of time.
boring toilet humour for little boys
Asolutley pornographic trash. A truly disgusting movie.. how does it rate 'M'? should be rated 'R' I have never seen such a vile, obscene movie. We did not watch 1/2 of it, was tempted to throw it in the trash (but would've had to pay $$!
Incestual, gay, lewd, porno... nothing more than that! CRAP!
Most of it was hilarious but it would've been a better movie without the whole jewish thing which I though was pretty unfunny. even though you know to expect that type of humour. Borat works better in short doses so make sure you watch all the mini movies in the deleted scenes. I still really enjoyed it.
As a bit of (not a major) fan of Ali G I was quite dissapointed with Borat. I gave it about 45 minutes then gave up. I actually found it a bit sluggish and boring.
Was expecting so much more from all the hype I had heard about this movie, very disappointed, found the movie all over the place with just one liners and crude laughs inbetween.
About the only comedy in the last 20 years where the critiques on the box are actually true. Some will hate it, some will just not get it and the rest of us think that it's the funniest movie that we've ever seen. It's been done before (Gunston- whom I couldn't stand) but not quite in this way. Brilliant.
Had some good moments and a few clever "traps" for the unwitting people being interviewed, but overall was lacking. It contained much less cleverness than I thought it would.
Crass yet extremely funny. Borat displays his (lack of) style whilst managing to offend most people he comes into contact with. Like chalk on a blackboard, but very watchable.
Absolutely hilarious from start to finish. Very clever stuff, although making Americans look stupid is like shooting fish in a barrel.
Cringe-makingly hilarious if you can bear to sit through it (my husband left the room a few times). I can't do better than borrow David Edelstein's phrase "squirm-und-drang" to describe this genre (a la The Office, Kath 'n Kim, Chasers etc).
The show's basic idea was about comedy, i dont see a lot deep meaning messages about politic culture economic or beliefs delivered to audience.
Some parts of the movie found to be funny, especially the part that Borat being stupid, but not the part about cultures, religions or feminism. It meant to be shown so that audience or at least movie makers laugh at it, but nothing is so funny about it, instead a part of our community could get hurt, so which one is the funny part?
In conclusion, the show is just worth watching.
Hilarious, confronting, delirious. I found myself laughing days later. A clever movie with two incredible actors not frightened to bare their all for comedy. Borat has no pretensions. it's a loads of laughs and certainly not to be missed. Maybe the Mankini could be missed...Maybe the wrestle could be missed but you'd also miss a lot of chuckles even though you need to watch these scenes through your fingers.
Lighten up people! Unless you have been on Mars the last 12 months you know before you watch this movie that some parts are likely to offend. Very funny when viewed with the right attitude.
Good for a laugh if you are not easily offended.
He was much better in tallageda nights
Can't recommend it for everyone, but those who like it will find it unmissable.
I couldn't enjoy it as I was feeling sorry for the people he came across & cringing to much. I can see the apeal to some though.
Outrageous - I loved it! Been a fan of Baron's character Ali G on T.V. with Borat. It makes you squirm but we could deconstruct this comedic text with great pleasure. A brave soul.
WOFTAM - hardly a laugh throughout the entire movie.
Did not bother watching more than 15 minutes. Sick, unfunny humour.
I turned it off and put it back in the envelope after 40 minutes...I couldn't stand it anymore.
A little bit crude but none the less, still funny.
Reminds us to re-consider how out of wack politcal correctness is !
It was ok some of the content was questionble from a parent's point of view but good.
Funny in parts, certainly better films made.
Sometimes funny, mostly crude humour with foreseeable punch lines.
It's one of those 'either you love it, or you hate it'.
Really didn't see what all the fuss was about this movie.
Don`t know what all the fuss was about this movie. Some of it was ok but most of it was boring.!!!!!
Got rather repetitive and boring after awhile.
Funny in parts but not like the hype that surrounded this movie when it first came out.
I found it mostly staged and unfunny, althogh in a cinema I can imagine people would laugh a lot at his antics - particularly the nude fight scene which I have to admit was pretty incredible - especially in the elevator. So in Gunston style (it has all been done before) he exploits American hospitality (on local TV and Rodeo) and I felt sorry for them being sent up. How he didn't get killed (at Rodeo) or imprisoned (putting the woman in the sack) I don't know - it must have cost a lot!
Don't take it so seriously & you might enjoy it. Firstly I really hated the foul 'Aristocrat' american comedy DVD, Jackass DVD, as well as South Park. But BORAT is a bit Like NORMAN GUNSTON some poor attempts at humour but many many "classic comedy GEMS". It is not political correct, it's homophobic, anti semite, racism, vulgar, contains bigotry and shows Americans as dumb, religious warped, gun mad community. You will cringe but in a nice way. Sacha is brilliant... better than Mel Brooks. Give it a go make up your own mind. (PS not suitable for young Kids, it may have a profound effect on their lives! ) ENJOY
very very irreverant ,politically incorrect and funny. we loved it marvyn and gerry (60 and 65 yrs young)
Oh dear! Well this one definitely depends on your stomach and whether you can suspend political correctness for eighty minutes. It was quite hilarious in some scenes and, that said, I do recall holding my hands over my face, dying with laughter, but asking someone to make it stop due to the gross factor! I say "maybe" because I think, while I generally enjoyed it, I think my IQ had dropped while watching it.
The humour only works in a few places in 'Borat'. Towards the end, the movie degenerates into a tasteless, 'when will this film end?' debacle.
Laughed loud, jaw now hurts!
I still can't believe that this movie was even made. So crass and absolutely lacking in finesse. Puerile!
out 0f 10 i give it a -17 dumb ass movie
Absolutly crap- waist of time!
This movie was an insult to the intelligence of the average viewer. It was so crude and disgusting we turned it off after about 20 minutes because it just kept getting worse the longer it went. It deserves no stars at all.
The main thing that was funny was how gullible the American people were - so much so that I wondered whether their reactions were genuine or whether they were in on the joke.
The trailers for this movie were awesome but the movie itself for me was a let down, there were some really funny bits but he really did over do it sometimes and it ended up getting quite boring.
This film was 5% hysterically funny, but 95% just plain awful for so many reasons.
Puerile, extremely unfunny, embarrassing. Just awful. I have never seen such truly pathetic attempt at comedy. No wonder it did well in America! Rubbish.
Totally irreverantly over the top hilarious.
Hi Comrades, this DVD is made to look like an old Soviet Union film. This movie is silly, anti-Semite and homophobic, but it does have a lot of original ideas and goes where none has gone before.
Very funny, very clever, but very wrong! Confirms what we already knew about the average American.
It was a funny movie with tongue in cheek satire. I can now understand why it was considered so controversial!!
exposed more than his ascerbic wit
I had high expectations for this movie but I was completely disappointed. I don't think I laughed once.
Although I expected I few laughs watching this movie I didn't expect it to be as funny and irreverent as it was. It reminded me of the old Bazza McKenzie movies where everybody and everything is fair game but with a sharper political edge in that it is real people getting the treatment. And who can forget the nude wrestling scene?
stupidity at its worst dont waste your time
So wrong, yet so funny. LMAO
Some funny parts, a little crass but okay. I am glad I didn't pay to see it at the movies!
Funny, worth watching if you have a very dry sense of humour
Parts of the movie were hilarious and other parts were a little crude. The movie is certainly original.
Well hysterically funny and unbelievably crude. You could be embarrassed that you are laughing so much. This film takes the mickey out of everyone and it's difficult to imagine how Ali G got away with it!
Hilarious. One of those movies you can see over and over again and not get tired of it
Unfortunately didn't live up to the hype. Some funny moments though.
Had its moments but just got sillier as it went on.
Silly but a lot of fun.
Not for the faint hearted or the serious feminist though.
very clever and funny, but I struggled a bit with some of the racist comments
Deliciously politically incorrect. Offensively hysterical.
Lived up to its expectations - knew there would be some border line scenes but loved it.
It's ok, not great, but if its watched without high expectations I think it will be enjoyed.
I believe this had the potential to be good, but I found it to be annoying
hmmm.. some laugh out loud moments, quite a few cringe moments. A revealing look at America with no prisoners taken. Borat goe for the jugular and serves em right but I prefer a bit more subtlety in satire.
this movie has it all funny bits rude bits boring bits shocking bits it is worth watching just for the unsuspecting americans reactions
we expected it to be silly but after the first half hour it completely lost the plot. Almost embarrassing to watch!
I was told the film was crap.Americans raved about this. This film is total CRAP.
It is a insult to the people where Borat is set and all the people.I did not laugh once.I could make a better home made movie than this movie that is an insult to the human race. Will be at the J.B.hiFI BINS FOR $2.00 SOON AS NO ONE WILL BUY ITOR EVEN WHAT IT.A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND POWER PUTTING THIS IN THE DVD PLAYER AT ALL.
DO NOT WATCH OR HIRE THIS AT ALLAND NVER BUY IT.
A bit of purile fun... this movie is not going to change the world... but if your stuck... then it is worth a laugh.
so funny...a little slow in parts, but you shouldn't miss this one
Absolutely hilarious but very rude & crude. Don't know how they got away with some of those things.
helirousely funny in such a wrong way..
Not as good as I thought it would be. Much prefer Ali G.
I was expecting better. Anyone can be crass... I just thought it wasnt v professionally made... sad because I liked Ali G a lot.
I saw some funny sides to this movie but I am now so PC that I cringed all the way through to the "Running of the Jews" when I could no longer take it!
Shock value - HUGE
More gasps of horror than gales of laughter but glad I saw it as I now know what 'Political incorrectness' is all about.
What a hoot of a movie. Laughs aplenty.
Fans of the TV version will love this. Not much of a plot line - it's all about the incidental "pranks" and the DVD offers a couple extra. Deliciously wrong and yet pretty damned funny.
Despite a few humerous moments, Borat really is just too crass to be enjoyable. A waste of two hours.
painful to watch but couldn't resist his chram!
I've always loved Ali G and have considered Sacha Cohen a comic genius, but this is an inconsistent movie of weird extremes. It is incredibly funny in parts but often resorts to totally unnecessary toilet humour and repulsive nudity. It is already a short movie (83 min) but editing out or replacing that ten minutes of rubbish would have made this a comedy classic.
