Strong Themes and Violence
Set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), a South African mercenary, and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories and their circumstances are as different as any can be – until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon – who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields – has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory. More than a search for a valuable diamond, the journey could save Solomon’s family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

10 years ago there were 200,000 black child soldiers in Africa, including those drafted for these nasty tribal conflicts over, you guessed it, diamonds. This was played out in this movie and is incredibly confronting, but comforting that we are thousands of miles from the horrors Sierra Leone, and neighbouring African States. Leonardo di Caprio is solid as usual and dodges more bullets than he did in Inception. High quality acting all round, but the movie is perhaps a shade too long. However, highly recommended.

The movie is.... entertaining, gripping, violent, credible, fascinating and very awesome. Unforgettable.
And I think it is also inspiring ausdiences to think about these countries and their situation. Blood Diamond is a fresh way to show the the perspectives of big enterprises for diamonds and the turmoil that carried on during 2006 in South of Africa. DiCaprio is amazing on screen as we would have hoped and the supporting characters in the movie are brilliant.
I like how the media was portrayed in the movie and the strong message that was portrayed about journalists and their readership.

I am just incredibly happy they made this movie. It rekindled my passion for justice in the area of forced child soldiers and the corruption that comes with pursuing wealth. This is hope in the midst of corruption. It is intense emotionally and there is a bit of violence, but it is totally worth watching for all mature and emotionally stable audiences!! This is real life!

A beautiful beautiful country drenched in blood and hatred. Two things that where said are very true... "When the war is over Africa will be a paradise" The other one: "TIA" If you want to know what that means, you have to watch the movie....
"Blood diamond" and "Lord o'war" both must see movies!

Powerful stuff. Di Caprio has now successfully shaken off the old Di Caprio pretty boy blandness and replaced it with the new hard edged no nonsense Di Caprio we see now. Some brutal scenes make you think how can we help these people. A cracker.

An incredible, confronting story. I thought that Leonardo Di Caprio was absolutely stunning in this film .... it really shows off his acting chops - he is one of the greats in my opinion. Djimon Hounslou and Jennifer Connolly are also amazing. The film is beautifully shot and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in seeing a great film.

I initially thought this movie to be an "adventure/shoot 'em up" without much of a reason to justify the bullets and bloodshed. I was only partly right. I was delighted to find that the movie story has its basis in truth. I became quickly engrossed in the movie and when it finished, was surprised that over two hours had passed. I have never been much of a DiCaprio fan, but he surprised me with the richness of his character. The supporting actors were fantastic and the ending was (fittingly) bittersweet. I unreservedly recommend this movie to those who are interested in social justice, those who enjoy DiCaprio's acting and those who like their movies to have a reason for being.

A Powerfull brilliant movie, technically excellent with great acting and so many subtle levels in a raw movie, the village elder saying thank god we dont have oil. Leonardo's Rhodesian character telling the story of how he was orphaned at 9, the absolute indoctrination of the child soldiers, the goodness within average People in Sierra Leone, the pure callous evil of the corporate and financial interests from gun dealers, mercenaries to the diamond trade, and ultimately that they now have peace. Someday Leonardo may have a happy ending.

A good movie and well acted by Leanardo. The movie is very violent and also heart rendering when you think of all this is done by one human to another. The director know what he wants and the cameramen has captured the rawness of the war zone very well. Worth watching once.

This is a real eye opener. Give diamonds a miss ladies ! Buy gold instead and after all, diamonds ARE so artificially priced and kept high to make $$$$ off. The cost in human lives per diamond just does not equate. Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent in this movie as are most of the actors, very believable in fact having friends who have lived in South Africa
and who have seen Blood Diamond, they say it is a good example of what the diamond traders do, killing the native African people and paying them almost nothing, basically slave labor ! I give it the full 5, there's a message in it for everyone.

I don't think I will ever look at a diamond again without thinking of Sierra Leone during those awfull years.How lucky I am to never have feared for my life as those people did.

A Hollywood Action-movie with some worthy messages about the exploitation of African people and the destruction of the culture.
"Every time something valuable is discovered in Africa, the African People die"
"God help us if they discover oil here" says an old African man against a backdrop of the complete devastation of his village, "then we will really be in trouble".
Spoiled for me by the Hollywood fakeness - the relentless pursuers pause long enough for the stars to deliver their big lines before the hail of gunfire continues once more. And was the central romance really necessary?

What a powerful film, and really opens ones eyes to what is happening in the news, even if only a minute is shown on the news - there is always more. Not just haunting because of the way diamonds come about, and the demand and apparent 'rarity' of them but how child soldiers are 'made' and stolen from their families. Brilliant performances by Djimon Hounsou and Leonardo Dicaprio, performances that really immerse the viewer into the roles, and especially with Leo - forget that they are acting.

This has to be one of the best films I have EVER seen! Didn't like Leonardo di Caprio before this, but he has matured into a totally convincing actor. Couldn't fault a single performance, the whole thing was just so realistically portrayed. I watched this movie through 3 times straight, something I have never done before - no sleep at all that night.
Just a warning - have a huge box of tissues nearby, because just seeing the atrocities committed by those in control in their pursuit of obtaining their fortunes will bring all you have ever seen, heard or read about the whole blood diamond outrage to a personal level when you see the effect it had on just one family. Also, the 'baby soldiers' are truly heartbreaking, especially when you realise this still takes place. The acronym 'T.I.A.' will forever bring back the horrors I have seen in this movie. A truly horrifying glimpse into some of the inhumane happenings in Africa, but one which simply cannot be missed.
Only film I have ever thought was worth a score of 10 out of 10! A real must-see!

This was a fantastic movie. I found it thought provoking, good guy, bad guy, victims, action of others. Some beautiful scenery yet the harsh reality of war torn nations. How easily the children can be brainwashed. We should all think of what others may go through so that we may have the luxury of our precious possessions.

This movie is based on a real situation in 1999 in Sierra Leone, Africa.
Civil War rages for control of the diamond fields and slave labour is used to mine the diamonds so that the rebels can trade them for firearms. Thousands have died and millions have become refugees. The rebels randomly cut of a slave's hand to keep them in line. There are 200,000 child soldiers in Africa who are trained to shoot and kill with automatics. The USA buys 75% of the world's roughcut diamonds of which 15% are conflict ones. Diamonds need to be smuggled out of the country. One fisherman found a big pink diamond while working in the mining camps and buried it. A diamond trader helps the fisherman find his family and a female journalist for a story, in exchange for getting the pink diamond. The trader and fisherman go get the diamond but the trader gets hurt. The fisherman and his son fly out of the area leaving the trader behind. The fisherman and the journalist go to london for a photo sting operation of an illegal buyer. She publishes her story. I recommend you also see the movie "Lord of War" staring Nicolas Cage, which deals with the trading of firearms in Sierra Leone.

Excelent allrounder.Acting,direction,photography all above average.Throughly enjoyed the exposure of the deadly word of big monopoly.Sierra Leone in civil upheaval. Terrible human sufferings, but a relatively happy ending.

Powerful movie in terms of the issues it highlights, child soldiers, commercialisation of life, exploitation of poor countries, corporate greed. Leonardo has matured into an excellent young actor in total contrast to the plastic style of the Pitts and Cruises etc.
Ending was somewhat melodramatic but I think the point was made.

this was a totally compelling movie - It was depressing in some ways but the acting and storyline were superb and the underlying message of redemptionand basic goodness was uplifitng.
Pulled no punches and depicted what is still really happening in africa today.
Watch it - "will they forgive us for what we have done to each other"

Like a fine wine Leo only gets better with age. He has matured into an incredible actor and now more believable as he has aged just that little bit and doesn't come across as a boy child.
The movie was excellent and I liked the fact sex wasn't the selling feature as Leo and Jennifer never so much as kiss on screen but they do have their moment.
Over all an excellent movie and now I know why I don't like diamonds.

A great action adventure. The politics are confused and the female lead is a little agravating (why does she have to be the best journalist in the world ever? Why not just a journalist?) and over the top American to make up for Leanardo's character being South African (or Rhodesian actually). However if you ignore these minor faults the film is super exciting and a great adventure and its heart is in the right place. The three lead actors (annoying journo included) all give good performances and the film is well directed with great action sequences.

What a fantastic movie! No wonder it was nominated for 5 Academy Awards. This is one that everybody should see, if only to understand the cruelty that went on in Sierra Leone with the slave labour in the diamond mines. I think that this is Leonardo DiCaprio's best role ever and his South African accent is brilliant as is his acting. Not to be missed!
