Alice White is the daughter of a shopkeeper in 1920's London. Her boyfriend, Frank Webber is a Scotland Yard detective who seems more interested in police work than in her. Frank takes Alice out one night, but she has secretly arranged to meet another man. Later that night Alice agrees to go back to his flat to see his studio. The man has other ideas and as he tries to rape Alice, she defends herself and kills him with a bread knife. When the body is discovered, Frank is assigned to the case; he quickly determines that Alice is the killer, but so has someone else, and blackmail is threatened.

Curious number - don't be put off by other reviewers. This is still a good example of the Hitchcock art and rewards persistence. Definitely for fans of the great man.

Its greatest interest is that its a very early Hitchcock. Excellent camera and lighting work making great use of dramatic shadow.

My, how morals have changed. Interesting with a touch of Hitchcock innovation.

What's to say I just didn't like the style of movie, the silent movie days starting the film and going from there. Just not one I'd recommend at all.

An absolute shocker. Don't waste your time. I only lasted about 20 minutes then had to give up.

This movie is NOT made in 1942. The cast list makes it sound like some kind of a documentary. None of the people listed are actually in the movie! This film is actually Hitchcock's 1929 early sound film made in England. Unless you're a complete Hitchcock buff, this film will not appeal, it is incredibly dated and, to todays audiences, will be laughable.
