Strong sex scene, themes and violence

Director: Darren Aronofsky
Actors: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder

BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter's professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Depends what 'floats your boat'. I found it slow and uninspiring.

An Intense and beautiful movie. Saw this in a plane first and was not too impressed, but the Blu-ray quality really added something

Fantastic! Great script, cast/acting, special effects, music, highly original, perfectly executed on several levels. Worth viewing more than once. One of the best American feature films of the 21st century, in my opinion! I put it onto my list of most favourite 10 movies ever! This movie was made on a "low budget " of only 13 million dollars, but produced over 300 million dollars, so was extremely successful, in other words; the director will become "Steven Spielberg" of this century if he continues producing great movies like this one...Highly recommended to most viewers.

An intense drama as seen through the eyes of a perfectionist ballerina. No action, this is a drama. Husband enjoyed it too but don't get this if you expect action. Great character portrayal by Portman.

Good stuff. Disturbing portrayal of a lost Ballerina in her prime who suffers a mental breakdown of sorts and leads the audience into her journey. Great performance from Portman.

Definitely worth watching. Although the story felt a bit long at times, the story is one that lingers with you for a while after watching it. The story line is a nice change from the same-old same-old we are seeing so much of these days. Better suited to a female audience. This is not a movie I would recommend for any younger girls based on the ballet. It has some rather confronting scenes which are unsuitable for younger eyes - hence the 15 rating.

Black Swan is a movie for girls. That said my daughters still found the female-female sex scenes confronting. Overall the journey the dancer makes to be successful is worth the cringe-worthy bits.

Sad and depressing yet very gripping and suspenseful. Natalie Portman plays the role so well and is very believable. Perhaps a little too grotesque at times and not really necessary. This is not the movie to watch when you want cheering up.

Black swan is an intense psychlogical thriller that follows the story of swan lake. I have never been a ballet fan but after watching this it gave me a new appreciation of the art and the story behind the dancing. It has inspired me to go to see swan lake as I understand the storyline and the intesity of the meaning behind it.

This was enjoyed more by the other than me. In my view this could of been a great movie but left me disapointed I wanted more ballet more emotion but the self mutulation was too hard to watch and the girl scene we both agreed was too much and unnecessary. Natalie Portman as lead was good, worth a watch for fans of her.

Mmmh ... I have to say I was very disappointed. It was nowhere near as good as I was led to believe from all the reviews and was lacking in many areas. She was a very frustrating character, especially in the beginning. She didn't come across as fragile or haunted - just weak and needy. I felt it was a ridiculous situation because there is no way a girl with that pathetic type of character would have been chosen for such a role. The story line was only different form the point of view it was about a ballet dancer - everything else has been done over and over before. Finally, the dancing that has been raved about so much (and Portman's input) were also sadly lacking. It was obvious that she was not doing the actual dancing ... the girl/s that danced that part were very talented and those very brief scenes were beautiful to watch but you could see in the close ups that she was not a dancer. In general it was a reasonably good movie and watchable, but was nowhere near as good as I expected or as talked about by the critics. It does not deserve an academy award. It was at the most, very average in every way.
