Definitely a movie worth watching. An absorbing story, interspersed with many excerpts from Swan Lake and background to a ballet production. Held my keen interest to the very end. What is real and what is psychotic imagination - they get well and truly mixed up.
The story of a ballerina who takes her back in swan lake way too serious, leading to mental health issues. I suppose this can happen when you don't eat. It was an okay movie, with plenty of blood and a good story, as well.
Great film. Dark, psychotic and intense.. moments are actually cringe inducing. Very well acted by Portman.
Great film! I've seen this twice & if you fancy a good thriller, this is the one to pick! It kept me interested the whole way through & I loved the quirky ending.
Psychological drama. Descent into madness. Odd movie but entertaining.
Portman’s performance saves it from zero stars but the horror rips off Mirrors and Terror at the opera was a better film on the subject despite being Mac-Beth as the play.
Dreadful horror/melodrama, full of one-dimensional characters, a disturbing study of mental illness. Depressing kitsch, just like Swan Lake itself really, when you think about it. Likely to put you off ballet for life.
Could have worked if it was a more intelligent drama without the over-the-top horror scenes.
I liked this movie. It was different, and original. The only drawback is that some of the 'scary' bits were funny rather than frightening.
I'll watch anything with Natalie Portman in it. This was good. Sort of a Donnie Darko movie.
An interesting movie. Excellent acting. Didn't appeal to my husband (probably because of the ending). I thought it would have been more of a thriller but it wasn't.
Absolutely loved it. I was happy to see that the movie is more than just about competition between girls in a ballet company. Very sensual, beautifully filmed and it managed to reconcile me with Natalie Portman.
intriguing story , Always have enjoyed Natalie Portman's performances.
I completely agree with Simon Miraudo's review (see above). I also LOVE this movie. (But order and watch it in Blue ray version, if you can!)
Didn't like this movie. It was very disjointed and quite disturbing to watch.
I've seen this before but had to see it again. A really intense movie, not for the faint hearted! Great performances from Natalie Portan and Mila Kunis.
Intense, awesome performance from Natalie Portman. A claustrophobic sexual thriller. Really enjoyed it.
Depressing, melodramatic and long.
great music, interesting scenes, good movie, wont be everybodies cup of tea.
Brilliant acting, original, thought provoking,
Wow, what a film... very spellbinding, I loved it...... it's edgy and enigmatic, moody and tense. The soundtrack is just beautiful and evocative. It's great to see Barbara Hershey again - where has she been?, and of course Natalie Portman is just brilliant... talk about inhabiting a role! (Is that really her stretching?) The final scenes with the black swan dance are the icing on the cake... it's brilliant!!! Wow!!
Thought prevoking. I continued to try and understand what exactly happened and why for a day or so. Left me a little up in the air. Cringed a few times.
Brilliant movie - the beginning leads you to think it will be very different from what it becomes. The pace rapidly draws the viewer in to an amazing movie. Loved it
Nowhere near what I thought it would be. I didn't even watch the end of the show. It received an acadamy award for best actress and that was absolutley well deserved Portman was superb, BUT that's it.................Very Very disapointing
This was horrible. It almost seemed to be wanting to make me think about deeper issues but instead just came across as awkward and weird.
Natalie Portman REALLY deserved the praise she got for this role ... she was amazing. Quite dark but the life of artists often involve such things as mental illness and obsessive behaviour. I thought it was an excellent film.
Really enjoyed this movie. You don't have to love the Ballet to enjoy this movie. Twists and turns all through the movie and kept you guessing until the end.
Hmmm, different. I did enjoy it, although a little heavy, not what I would call 'really dark'. Natalie is fantastic.
different, not sure what I thought
I love thrillers that keep you guessing and this ticked all the right boxes for me
Not at all what I expected. Very dark, but I did enjoy it
Nice ballet sequences-Good acting but too dark for our taste
Totally amazing. The camera work in this is brilliant, so many mirrors to work around. Natalie Portman gets right into it, Tchaikovsky's music fits the darkness of the story perfectly and the tension throughout is palpable. What we do in the pursuit of absolute perfection. The is pretty near a perfect movie.
I am not a ballet fan but this movie was excellent. Highly recommended.
Enjoyable movie, didn't guess the ending which was good, its a movie, where everyone that watched it had a different view on the ending.
Simply superb. An intensely bleak psychological drama that examines the nature of madness and identity. Most definitely not a popcorn flick but one that will amply reward your close attention.
Good storyline, great acting, something different
I was engrossed throughout this movie. Not a slow moment in its entirety. Natalie Portman did a very good job.
A fantastic film. Loved it, dark and intriguing, great story...
A internal struggle between good and evil, innocence and corruption! Blah Confusing and confronting imagery mad a DOG's BREAKFAST of this movie which had the potential to be MUUuuch better than what it turned out to be.... the end resulst was tedious, long-winded and.....BOOOOOOrrrrrRRRRiiiiiing!
Overacted and confusing structure. Symbolism too overt for me
Although it was not as weird as Donnie Darko, I can certainly appreciate the time and effort it took for Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis to play professional ballerinas. Even though Natalie Portman's character (Nina) was portrayed as crazy, her mother was even worse.
well, just not bad but not good.
It was well acted but the storyline was very poor. I find it a cop out when a storyline lurches between reality and fantasy and you can't figure out which is which. Nor did I care at the end.
It seemed like a hollywood failed attempt at a dark movie style. Disappointed after all the hype. Worst movie since Australia the Movie.
Moving slowly towards what this movie is really about: Schizophrenia! Nice visual effects, good acting, Twisted storytelling playing with reality and unreal, you will ask sometimes what the hell you are watching. Not the best movie of the year however somewhat interesting if you aren't expecting too much from a movie which had such a hype everywhere. Don't be too impatient as it is SLOW and you might sometimes feel bored. A positive thing is that you don't need to love ballet to like it!
I must have been expecting too much after all the hype, turned it off after 20 minutes, boring!
I enjoyed this movie, at times I wasn't sure what was real and what was fake but it held my interest. Natalie Portman played her role extremely well.
Very strange movie. But one you cant stop watching. Natalie Portman is amazing in this role.
Beautiful - if a little confronting.
A bit like Mulholland Drive, good film, but not great
Really weird movie, complicated to understand. Not a bad movie but very strange and very dark. If you like those dark type movie, watch it.
This movie drags on in its beginning with little or no action or apparent meaning. Never got that enthralled.
One of the most overhyped movies of all time. Derivative plot, stock characters played by left-overs from central casting. We lasted about 15 minutes.
Can see why Natalie won the awards for this one. Her acting is flawless and the spiral into madness is not only compelling, it is frightning.
Overrated psychological thriller, worth watching if your into that genre.
Beautifully disturbing but intriguing psychological thriller about a delusional ballerina obsessed with perfection. Dark yet gripping. A must see.
I liked this but it's not the kind of movie for everybody. If you're after a 'vege-out' movie this is not it.
I was surprised by this movie, Natalie comes into her own, great character development, tho the dancing is a disappointing
Too hyped movie. May be my taste is different.
The self mutilation scenes disturbed me so much I stopped watching after the first half hour or so.
Quite dark and intense, but very enjoyable. Didn't get up once. Definately a chick flick though.
Scary, but very well done
Complete and utter garbage, cliched and unbelievable. How Natalie Portman won an Oscar for this is beyond me.
Scarry, Unpleasant to watch and in the end unrealistic. I would not recommend this movie. The only good thing to watch was the occassional dance routines.
I was looking forward to seeing this film after all the hype.I found it disappointing and quite ordinary, made bearable by Natalie Portman's superb acting
Honestly! Completely hysterical melodrama really. Solid performances but I think to enjoy it you really have to be in the mood for a bit of a silly ride. The lead character embodied that old fashioned "female hysteria" that you don't see much these days.....
Could have lived without seeing this movie. Awful, tried to understand what was real but it was hard work to watch.
Thought provoking but most enjoyable.
Mental Illness left untreated exacerbated by lack of food, injuries and fear and no one to turn to in a demanding sport (whoops) art. It was filmed beautifully but a bit too visceral and heartless for me.
wow! that was awesome. who knew a story about ballet could be raunchy, scarey and beautiful. im not one for ballet but i really did enjoy it.
What a horrible movie! I couldn't watch past the first 20 or so minutes. I can only hope for those who watched it all that it did get better, but I highly doubt that.
I just wanted to slap the lead character. Don't waste your time with this duckling!
Unnecessarily grotesque and gothic which took away from the story and the dancing.
Really enjoyed the movie but just couldn't understand the very end!!!
Found this movie very disturbing, not for me
This is a mature drama, also reasonably dark. It has plenty of layers for the viewer to make sense of and has some great actors and good acting; however, the movie itself did not really do it for me. It had its moments of brilliance and although it retained some of my interest until the end, for the most part, it was not as edgy as all the hype made it out to be, nor as exciting. It was an okay movie, just not great. But yes, it was different, had a few twists to keep the viewer guessing, and was an interesting path to take.
This is a very dark sinister movie. The lead dancer in the ballet is a very troubled young woman and many of the things we see through the movie turn out to be all in her head. The ending is very strange but all in all a very enjoyable movie for the adults. Highly recommended.
This movie deserves awards. Excellent story, brilliant acting. Very dark though, and if you are put off by sex or self harm, you won't want to watch this one.
Very Strange ! But interesting.
Good Movie, keeps you interested with a twist however you do have to focus to understand what is going on and i would not recommend for the faint hearted.
As usual Natalie Portman was excellent. Mila Kunis stepping out of her "Jackie" shadow.
Disappointing considering the hype... hard to distinguish between the protagonist's reality and delusion... and awfully slow
The feedback I received prior to viewing the film gave me a different expectation. It wasn't really my sort of movie and I would probably rate as a three.
Found this to be rather dark, depressing movie, Thought I would really enjoy it, but found that it left me feeling a bit grossed out,. Also was very slow
Not sure about this one is a bit weird have to think about the story line to get it even then still confusing. Not one i would pay to go see at the movies.
really liked this movie, showed how twisted the mind can be???
I really liked this movie. Very dark but intriguing.
I was entranced with the film. I was perplexed however whilst watching it, as it is not a "horror" film in my opinion, it's more a psychological thriller. Because it was rated "horror" I was expecting something completely different.
bit too slow for me, didn't finish it
Couldn't see what all the hype was about. Good premise for a film but poorly executed that couldn't be saved by the great acting by Portman and Kunis. Predictable story line and saw the ending coming from early on in the film. Wouldn't waste my time and certainly wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Worst movie of the year? Or worst movie of all time. Cliched, ponderous, pretentious. As terrifying as an electronic parts catalogue. This movie is to the horror genre as Scwarznegger is to Shakespeare
Extremely slow, boring, couldn't even finish watching it.
I sat and watched this movie with my wife, as we are both fans of Natalie Portman and dance I thought this movie would be a good one for us....How wqrong I was. The movie is very well shot and Natalie Portmans acting is superb, and Natalie's dancing scenes where very well done, I could actually see her as a dancer. However the over graphic sex scenes and the heart stopping scare scenes I could of done without.
If you are in the mood for a creepy mind scare-a-thon this is your movie, if like me you wanted to see some amazing dancing i would give this a miss abit too much for my taste.
I found this movie tedious - don't ask me what happened at the end because I fast forwarded that part.
I can totally see why this was not everyone's cup of tea, but this film has stuck with me all week. It's not for the light-hearted--it's not a pretty ballet movie--it's an uncomfortalbe and confusing tale of psychosis and obsessiona and it will MESS WITH YOUR HEAD. But I still loved it. This is what cinema should be (for better or worse) deeply affecting and thought provoking.
A ballerinas disturbing descent into madness. A horror movie with lots of tutus. The stuff of nightmares. Not my cup of tea!
This is a good movie, very well acted, which will leave you feeling very uncomfortable...
She is on some serious acid
What a superb movie. Portman is perfect.
Excellent movie. Great script and superbly acted. Recommended highly.
Shows the yin and yang of a prima ballerina, Nina at a turning point in her life as she strives for perfection playing the Black Swan. Natalie Portman is, as you would expect, 'perfect' as Nina and provides great depth to the role as do the other characters friend/arch rival (Mila Kunis), mother (Barbara Hershey) and the teacher (Vincent Cassel). Overall an intriguing take on the whole Swan Lake storyline that keeps you guessing throughout the whole movie...
An unusual tought provoking DVD
A very dark movie. I'm sure this movie was more extreme than what really happens in the professional ballet world. An eye opener about people who are trying to achieve perfection and be the best.
Wasn't sure what to think. It took a while to get into it, and although I got sucked in to wanting to know what happened at the end I probably would not watch it again. Was quite different and was not at all what I thought - though I hadn't read any reviews or knew a story line, I heard that it was good so wanted to see what the fuss was about.
Loved it!! Didn't actually realise it was a thriller bordering on horror when I booked it, I thought it was a chick flick and told my husband I would watch it when he wasn't home. He is more aware than I am and wanted to watch it (now I know why!!) Had to look through my fingers a couple of times when I got a bit scared but it is well worth watching even if you HATE scary movies like myself!
Too intelligent for my taste, dancing was nice, acting not so good
Watched this all the way through and have no idea what the real story line is. Had been in 2 minds about seeing it, should of listened to the one that said don't.
A deeply emotional film. Loved it!
Did not really enjoy this film, very dark and just plain weird. I would not watch again or recommend to others
A very dark drama, showed the inner turmoil very well. Very hard to distinguish what was real and happening to her, and what was a figment of her imagination. Enjoyed it immensely, best entertainment I have watched for ages!
Waste of time, stupid, don't bother.
Great psychological thriller, messes with your mind a bit because you question what has actually happened....makes you think about it on a deeper level.
Absolutely brilliant film!! One of my favourites. What more can I say? Natalie Portman deserved that Oscar!
Brilliant story mixing reality with immagination leaving one wondering.
Worth all the accolades it received. Excellent film that make no apologies that it is a film about ballet, or a young womans mind.
Bitterly disappointed, Natalie looked good ,story line very weak.
Brilliantly acted but very disturbing. Since it seems to have set out to be uncomfortable and challenging, it has achieved it's goals. Natalie Portman is stunning even when whittled down to skin and bones, and since that is the state a professional ballerina has to exist in I applaud her devotion to her craft.
The beginning was about as interesting as watching paint dry and judging by many of the other reviews, which I have now read, I wouldn't have enjoyed the rest of it if I had kept watching
Did not enjoy this movie at all. Too graphic. More horror than anything else. Story line was predictable to an extent. Left bad taste in mouth.
A brilliant performance from the whole cast, who are given a great script and fantastic storyline to work with. One or two of the fantasy sequences push the limits a litlle, and threaten to turn the whole thing from drama into farce, but the film manages to stay just this side of ridiculous. It's a big, swirling, slightly hysterical movie that attacks your senses and leaves you wanting to see it again, just to see if it actually made that much sense at all. If you want a linear, sensible dance movie then don't go here, but if you want a bol, sexy and intesting take on the age-old idea of a person being the sum of their discrepant parts, you'll love it.
Strange, strange, strange. Say no more...
Brilliantly performed by Portman. This film isn't perfect, but it's pretty damn close to it! Again, Portman is brilliant, particularly in the final scenes where she proves why she got the Oscar!
Very strange movie, very dissappointing
Affecting! I couldn't get some scenes out of my head after watching the film.
Didn't enjoy it, too slow for most of it and the last 20 minutes was enough.
I could only watch half the movie. I'm not into S&M and I found it all rather gruesome and tiring.
Couldnt get into this movie but will hire it again & watch it without interuptions
Brilliant! truly terrifying film with real psychological suspense.
Gripping and very clever in the way you're never sure what is real and what is in her head.
Very twisted movie. Suggestion: don't watch with you mum or dad.
Most. Depressing. Film. Ever.
Very interesting movie and one that tackles the sensitive subject of mental illness in a really confronting way. I enjoyed the movie, erotic, challenging and very different from the normal hollywood predicability
I like Natalie Portman in just about everything else that she has done, but not this, this was just bizarre. I followed the storyline, but, just bizarre.
Far Out Brusell Sprout - this left me dazed and confused!!
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this film, but I'm glad I've seen it. Some others found it confusing, I thought it was pretty easy to follow. Fantastic acting
This movie is sick. No moral thought has gone in to it ay all.
I felt that this was a very over rated movie the dancing was not impressive and the story line was very weak.
Not for children or prudes! Still trying to figure out reality from hallucination. Wouldn't watch again.
Love this film. She's so unhinged it's fabulous. Great choreography too.
A bit bizarre. Wouldn't watch it again.
A very tense, finely crafted experience, not a frame wasted. I've skipped Aronofsky's efforts since 'Reqium for a Dream' and wasn't sure I'd ever like another of his films, I was wrong, this was great cinema.
Absolutely loved it. Superb acting. Very moving.
Becomes more and more bizarre as the film progresses. Brilliant acting all round.
Good movie, bit weird & freaky, once watched never again.
I just could not understand this movie. The actors did a good job but the plot was extremely strange.
Waow.. Hard to say what I like and don't like about this movie, but I like it! It's though but so well played... Hats of for Portman!
Unusal movie had trouble telling if is was real or the main actress was dreaming
Wouldn't recommend this for children! It is the kind of movie that leaves you feeling unsettled in a creepy way.
Fabulous movie. Loved the storyline.
Intriguing and totally riveting. Natalie Portman was credible as a prima ballerina. Mental disorder was portrayed with so much insight and sensitivity.
Excellent, intense, suspenseful. Some may say its a slow film, but I believe this builds its intensity. Its a controlled performance by Natalie Portman, she was fabulous! Filmy folk will love the way the director has kept this film bubbling along & keeping you wondering. Cinematography in dance seens was spot on. Great movie!
A little confusing, not what we were expecting
Very dark and gripping. Enjoyed it from start to finish.
Great acting but overall a little depressing
I was very hesitant in watching this film as i had found Arinofsky's previous films very hard going and could not even finish watching The Wrestler. But this one is assisted by a stunning perfomance from Portman and even though the melodrama is layed on thick i found it impoosible to look away. Have to give this one 4 stars and recommend that those on the fence give it a chance.
Very good movie even though I thought I had the thread but a times I was confused like other viewers. Something was left out in the editing I suspect . No wonder the poor girl was disturbed ,did you check out the little girl bedroom ?, Very strange behaviour of the Mother that was not explained, more editing ?. Interesting movie just short of 4 stars.
GOOD BUT VERY STRANGE MOVIE!
This movie was very dark and I really didnt enjoy it.
Awesome movie, keep me on the edge of my seat!!!
This was a very intense movie.Quite different and very interesting to watch.
Strange but riveting and original movie, Natalie Portman puts in a convincing effort. Definitely worth seeing.
Hard to follow at times but overall a good movie. Well deserved Acamady Award Natalie Portman!!
Absolutely beautiful movie. A very moving story and wonderful dance scenes and music. Natalie Portman is perfect for the lead role.
AWESOME! Loved it.... a total mind bending movie with a great twist.... confused me a little bit, but easily figured out at the end! A
Ah! I watched this movie hoping that a gutsy story line would evolve but disappointed when it didnt. This is such a dark, melodramatic and "disturbing" movie. Not sure if it was more about "the shock factor "or if it really does mirror the ballerina's of the highest echelon. Most unappealing to this audience, specifically my 16 year old and her peers.I will give credit to the main actor, Natalie Portman, she can act.
Very strange movie and very dark not what I anticipated
weird and sexual. husband thought it was strange but I liked it. Well acted and very raw
Awful movie. My time would have been better spent scrubbing the toilet.
Very good if a bit dark and confronting! Wanted to see it but wouldnt usually choose anything with horror classification so dont tell me more about that genre! Glad we saw this one though!
strange film...nothing like i thought it would be.
After all the hype and PR, I was disappointed in this movie. The acting was of course brilliant from Natalie Portman, however the movie just didnt do it for me. Bit of a let down.
Great movie. A little difficult to follow at times, but that is exactly how it is supposed to be. Highly recommended.
weird and disturbing, but very good film, worth renting.
Black Swam was an enthralling and well acted film. Natalie Portman deserved her "Best Actress Award". The film highlighted the compettive world of ballet dancing, and the extremes that dancers go to to get ahead. But sometimes at a cost.
As long as you know a little bit about the movie before you watch its really good. I thought the main actress played a fantastic part I think she even won an oscar for her effort. I gave it an 8/10
Powerful performance by Natalie Portman. Incredible movie.
Excellent movie, Natalie Portman is brilliant in this movie of course, she won an Emmy for it. Very inspiring! Makes you want to go out and learn ballet.... Will probably go out and buy this movie so I can watch it again and again.
So Bizarre, still unsure what happened and what was an hallucination. Probably should have read the bio better. If i had of known it was a horror genre i wouldnt have chosen it. I thought it was going to be this great battle of dancers etc.
Most definitely a movie you will watch once and go. Hmm yeah. Good, but yet a little overhyped. The acting by Natalie Portman is what makes it worth it.
Not sure what to say on this one, Natalie Portman is always brilliant however it's dark and weird. My wife hated it and I got it for her to watch. It's one of those movies that you have to watch and make your own mind up. 5/10
Not what I expected would not recommend to anyone.Totally weird with a storyline that had no relation to anything.Poor poor poor.
OK but NOT brilliant! Worth a watch but too much dancing.
This is not what I was expecting. The only thing I had heard was that it was dark, and that it was. I would usually not sit through a film about ballet (or dance for that matter), but this kept me riveted to the screen from beginning to end. You just didn't know which way it was going to end. Fantastic stuff. My wife's rating is 5 stars and a must see.
Amazing performance by Natalie Portman - as always! The movie was a lot darker than I had anticipated and left me with a very unnerving experience. I am not usually a fan of the ballet but the story line was so bold that I really enjoyed (surprisingly) the movie.
It was weird! Couldn't work out which bits actually happened and which bits were in her head ...
I was surprised when I read the movie was a Horror/Drama as I had prepared myself for a Drama only. So at the end I was somewhat disappointed and left somewhat disappointed. Natalie Portman was great as usual which was one of the reasons I remained so focused on what was happening.
Utterly Fantastic! Like all Grimm fairtales it has dark and disturbing moments. Natalie Portman is absolutely brilliant playing a troubled young women striving for perfection in an industry where perfection is everything. The ballet scenes are beautifully shot and Darren Aronofsky really knows how to wrench emotion our of the viewer. You'll be thinking about and discussing this movie for weeks
It's an extremely dark and painful movie albeit incredible acting by Natalie. I'm sorry it's not my cup of tea.
Don't bother with it. Weird
not my thing, couldn't even watch it till the end. great acting by natalie tho.
Good acting but disturbing story line..
A darker look into the portrayl of playing good and bad, of being both god perfect and the devil evil.
The Black Swan investigates the sadness of the most famous ballet, the dance of Natalie Portman's Odile is both beautiful and dark.
The ending will linger in your thoughts just as the ballet does when the final act is finished.
What a brilliant yet disturbing movie! Absolutely amazing! I still am not sure what was really happening! Amazing acting and directing! No wonder it won Oscars!
spellbinding. acting was excellent.
Great movie, portman is awesome!!
Totally implausible. Someone this crazy would be in a straight jacket long before she reached the dizzy heights of Prima Ballerina. I got sick of trying to work out what was real or just her imagination, there's no clues so the director can use as much poetic lisense as he likes. If she really did have a 9 inch shard of glass stuck in her stomach, it defies belief that she could have danced the last act of Swan Lake in this state.
did not like this movie at all very depressing wouldnt recommend it
I love the ballet but really this was more than just a 'ballet' movie, don't watch if expecting brilliance on the dance scene. Artistically brilliant, The depths of the mind of someone so close to achieving everything they thought they wanted or was pushed there by loved(?) ones, not even trusting their own self.It is a "OMG' type of movie, where is it going, with twists and turns with the depth of how dark can she really get, in her quest to perfect the 'black swan'. Cudos to Natalie for putting herself out there in this movie, pushing herself to her limits to achieve this amazing movie.
Beautiful dancing but not enough of it. Excellent film with insights into obsession, Had an unexpected ending.
I found the story weak and pathetic. If its was based on a true story (as I never bothered to check). then it was sad and disturbing. If you are not a ballet freak then dont bother hiring it. I only gave it 2 stars cause Natalie portmans acting was very good and that it.
I watched this movie twice and didn't really get it. But I do get the point. I also don't see what the fuss about the Natalie Portman's body-double dancer complaining about Natalie Portman's head being put on her body. There's not THAT much foot-work shown! Overall I was disappointed with this movie but it is worth a watch!
Brilliant performance by Natalie Portman, but one viewing is certainly enough for me. Very dark and disturbing, intense from opening to close. Unfortunately I made the mistake of reading another review on here which discloses the ending so I guess I was just aniticipating that outcome.
Not what i thought.... very weird.... some advice DONT watch it with your mum very awkward moments hahaha!!
Seems to be some mixed reviews here. I myself thought this movie was brilliantly done. Natalie Portmans performance is amazing. I see her in a new light and has gained my upmost respect as an actress.
Natalie Portman palyed her role well. The movie itself was quite disturbing and an intense movie to watch. Not at all what I expected and did not really enjoy very much. Would not be a movie that I would care to see again.
not something i would watch again
Her uncertainty and insanity annoyed me
I don't know what awards this movie won, maybe the award for the most boring movie ! I really like Natalie Portman, but in this movie her acting was weak and she looked horrible, she looked like a bag of bones. This movie went nowhere, it was soooo slow then just ended - don't waste your time with this one !
An amazing film and a story that stays in the mind and has led to several re-viewings and much discussion in our household. The battle between the light side and the dark side is an old one. Coverting your neighbours job/talents etc is a road to doom. Unfortunately the sex scenes limit the viewing age, I wouldn't let young teens watch, but suppose many have, thinking it was a ballet movie.
A mentally unstable ballerina gets her big break and becomes progressively delusional and self-destructive. A familiar story of life emulating fiction. The performance by Portman is first rate but overall the film is lacks originality. Also the ballet sequence at the end could have been better (reference The Red Shoes). 3.5 stars
A bit weird - not what I expected. I guess I was thinking it might be a bit more along the lines of "Single White Female", but the lesbian side of things was a bit over the top. Still - I watched it right through to the end.
I was personnally disappointed, not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't a strange, very sexual film about a shy, over protected, schizophrenic young girl that pushes herself into a nervous breakdown and kills herself in the effort to be the pefect prima ballerina as 'The Black Swan' in classic ballet of Swan Lake. Still scratching my head about what was really and what wasn't. my Husband didn't bother and just went to sleep! ! !
as many have said - not what I was expecting but i enjoyed. Few twists and turns :)
Excellent non predictable psychological thriller.
Wasn't what I was expecting but still enjoyed it. Was a bit hard to follow at times with knowing what was, and was not, really happening! Disappointed that it didn't look more at the wold of ballet in general rather than just in the mind of one ballerina. 3.5
A strange concoction of fantasy, delusion and the real yet extraordinary world of professional ballet. Separating these elements is the mental challenge and the entertainment in this movie.
Fight Club meets Shakespeare In Love. A twisting film with an excellent performance by Natalie Portman.
Didn't enjoy at all. Thought I might have enjoyed the ballet but that was very limited. Usually enjoy Natalie Portman's acting but just thought the whole story was implausible and frankly quite boring.
3 or 4 stars? not sure which. They should have called this one, 'the black steam train', very slow to start, long time to gain momentum, but when full steam achieved, fascinating
I was expecting to see a film about a career ballerina who is forced to access her repressed dark side in preparation for her role as the swan queen and cracks under the pressure. Instead, the film I saw was about a meek young woman who's possibly schizophrenic and certainly on the verge of a nervous breakdown from the opening reel. There's no real drama because Nina is already broken. All that's left is for the viewer is to watch her become increasingly unhinged.
Black Swan has a lot of flaws: The conception of Nina (Natalie Portman) is a major problem. No woman this childish and meek would ever last in an elite dance company, so it's highly improbable that the company director (Vincent Cassel) would single her out for the prima ballerina role. We keep hearing about how Nina is technically perfect but clinical and restrained, but we never see any evidence of this fact because Portman is filmed mostly in tight facial close-ups during these scenes, probably to disguise the fact that her dancing isn't so spectacular
Brilliant! Loved what they did with this. Portman did a fabulous job of playing a haunted person.
Saw this at the movies yesterday. I've read lots of reviews saying that this is a great movie, and now that I have watched, I defiitely agree. Natalie Portman deserves all the awards she wins for this role. Very dark and confronting.
GREAT! Funnier than I originally thought. Seems very serious and dark; but has light moments too.
Can't wait to own it!
