Strong coarse language

Director: Joel Coen
Actors: John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, John Turturro, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston, Philip Seymour Hoffman

The film that has spun off its own religion - Dudeism. The Dude, Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is unemployed and laid-back... until... Victim of mistaken identity, two thugs break into his apartment in the errant belief that they are accosting Jeff Lebowski the Pasadena millionaire. In hope of getting a replacement for his soiled carpet Dude visits his wealthy namesake and, with buddy, ex 'Nam' veteran, Walter (John Goodman), he is swept into a Coenesque comedy/thriller of extortion, embezzlement, sex and dope. It takes guys as simple as the Dude and Walter to make a story this complicated... And they'd really rather be bowling.

A cult classic! Albeit a bit 'cultish' it's a fun film that is a great watch! The ending was a bit soft but overall made for a fantastic film

Another weird movie from the Cohen brothers. The main characters not very likeable in my view, lazy slackers with a sense of entitlement, spending plenty of their free time on bowling , drinking and socialising. Very different and quite opposite to the main character of "A Serious man". I much preferred "A Serious man". Could not identify with dudes in this film, maybe I am not laid back enough to enjoy it. maybe it takes a very relaxed viewer to appreciate it... I do not even consider it to be a comedy. Just weird...Three stars for originality.

It's got those classic Coen Brothers ingredients: quirky characters, petty crime, and plot twists aplenty. However, it doesn't quite make it as a memorable film like other Coen offerings. A no-hoper but cool dude accidentally gets embroiled in a kidnapping and so tries to turn it to his advantage. The central character is a one-joke wonder, but the John Goodman character has some flesh to it. There are weird "dream" sequences which try to fill the gaps in the narrative. There are some hilarious lines but this movie is about as satisfying as junk food.

Bowling alley buddies go on a mission to recover a carpet. Tedious stoner comedy that is more notable for being cool rather than anything more interesting.

The Coen Brothers greatest creation - THE DUDE! Hilarious movie with off the wall quirky characters. Great dialogue and great pacing this movie is comedy gold and has an excellent soundtrack to accompany the crazy world of Jeff Lebowski, especially when he is having a "dream" from being drugged. A Movie.

I am afraid neither my husband or I liked this film - we did not even finish watching it. The language was enough to make us turn it off really. We really like the actors, but not in this film.

Probably the most quotable movie of all time. 'The Big Lebowski is a must-see comedy for everyone and even has a few aspects of mystery involved that amplify its already undisputed greatness.

I too had heard all about this one ..."you gotta see it" ....so I did...and "meh". It's not that great. Not awful, but not a classic in my books. The ending was a letdown.

This is classic Coen brothers black comedy/farce about mistaken identity and dysfunctional camaraderie; probably still their best movie despite their other more recent classics such as Fargo, O Brother where are Thou? and Burn After Reading

Decidedly weird with numerous sudden flips of mood and style, sometimes fantasy and sometimes a continuation of the story at a different location. Sometimes hard to tell the difference. Yet the movie is quite enjoyable even if the plot is far-fetched and may not make any sense. It's a film about characters more than anything else.

Pretty funny! Wasn't as great as I was expecting, considering all the hype surrounding it, but entertaining enough with some really good moments.

This movie always gets high praise but actually....it's rubbish! I guess it was funnier to film than to watch. All the best bits appear to be in Joel and Ethan Coen's mind. They cast Steve Busemi and give him nothing to say as in in-joke! Nice one - doesn't work. Everyone overacts.

This film has become a classic and Im not the greatest fan of the directers work, but I decided to give this movie a try. It was a great decision and although it ends abruptly, the ride to the end was enjoyable.

The Coen brother's concoct an hilarious tale about a life-long slacker unwittingly drawn into the underworld. John Goodman is a classic in this film. Much recommended.

My expectations may have been a little high going into this, but it wasn't the cult classic I was hoping it would be. Enjoyed it nonetheless. Plenty of characters, all with their own quirks. I enjoyed Jeff Bridges as The Dude, John Goodman was a good choice as the angry Walter and I always like Steve Buscemi, but felt he was a little under-utilised here. Plenty of colourful language (read the classification warnings people!!) and plenty of laughs. The dude abides.

At least is it different. The bad language just gets monotonous. I did love the whole thing revolving around ten pin bowling, that was cool.

I was a little dissapointed with this movie. Classified as a cult movie, I found a little dull and confused even though there were a few good laughs in it. There is no point ot Lebowski's life and not a great deal more for this movie. My 3 rating is for some of the laughs it stil gave me.

Eh. Interesting as it's Coen brothers, but that's about it. Hardly the cult classic it's purported to be, but if you want something disposable to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, it's worth a look.

If you can handle the heavily F-worded mongrel but brilliant dialogue, harebrained antics and a warped fragmented plot, I think you’ll be thoroughly entertained as I was. The story’s outlandish oddballs elicited full belly laughs to chuckles while dream sequences and 10 pin bowling scenes hit the goofy-is-good mark in this homage to ’40s film noir. The acting is superb, none better than Jeff Bridges who as “The Dude” puts a whole new perspective on being laid-back. John Goodman as the overbearing and short fused Vietnam vet Walter Sobchak is too dumb to give sensible advice or make levelheaded decisions. Classic cult followers (and those who aren’t) have plenty of reasons to rave about this memorable Coen brother’s comic absurdity!

I had great expectations about this movie, which is never normally a good thing as it leaves you disappointed, but this movie was a let down. Jeff Bridges was hilarious and easily his best performance, but overall the movie just lacked something.

This film gets raved about as cult, but I'm not sure why. There is basically no plot, and it has the pace of game of ten pin bowling at the over 95's annual championship. Rent it only if you are a fan of Bridges or Goodman. There is one funny line delivered after a one night stand that Bridges has with the dominatrix daughter of the Big Lebowski, but thats it. My rating ... 4 Yawns...

This was a good "road" movie, even though it didn't move too far from the bowling alley. There were some good laughs, some uncomfortable, but on the whole the acting was fine. Jeff Bridges (the Duke) portrayed a spaced-out hippy just as I remember them. The soundtrack wasn't real bad either.

One of the best of the Cohen Brothers efforts. Quirky characters portray a different side of the US. Or at least an LA aspect of it. John Goodman is brilliant.
