A big, long western of the old school, with big stars, good plot, good characterisations and wonderful cinematography. Gregory Peck plays the unsterstated hero, likeable and dependable. Charlton Heston, his rival in the romance stakes, gets nastier as the film progresses then seems to find some decency and redeemable qualities at the end. For me though, the standout performance was Burl Ives, commanding every scene he was in with his big, tough persona and booming voice. It builds decent tension and works nicely to its climax. If you want to watch an older, handsome western film with good values, this is worth it.

A Western where the 'stranger' who comes to town does not clean it up by the barrel of a gun. Also has some mythic overtones like the father who kills his son and the battle to the death of the two godlike land barons. Interesting if not a little overlong.

A great classic. The moral dilemma posed and the way it is resolved is particularly relevant to our times.
