Bernie features a series of talking head interviews with the citizens of Carthage, Texas that are so funny, folksy, and fully-realised I was certain they were fictional. But no, Richard Linklater mixes documentary with recreation in this bizarre true story, mercifully avoiding caricature and farce despite the subject seemingly screaming for it. Bernie features a series of talking head interviews with the citizens of Carthage, Texas that are so funny, folksy, and fully-realised I was certain they were fictional. After all, reality is rarely a convincing representation of itself. But no, Richard Linklater mixes documentary with recreation in this bizarre true story, mercifully avoiding caricature and farce despite the subject seemingly screaming for it. It reminded me of When Harry Met Sally, which continually interrupted itself with those wonderfully genuine interstitials of old married couples reflecting on their meeting. Bernie, however, concerns much darker matters.

Jack Black stars as real-life local legend Bernie Tiede; the sweet, sensitive, and much-loved mortician of this tiny Texan town. Though he gained his notoriety for a fairly unsavoury crime, Bernie's acquaintances report to the camera that he was already a celebrity amongst them for his good deeds alone. Among his saintly duties was comforting the DLOLs (Dear Little Old Ladies), and widower Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine) fell into this category. She was a bitter old millionaire whom the residents of Carthage no longer had any time for. Bernie worked hard to melt the ice queen, and ultimately broke through her cruel veneer. Once in, there was no escape for the eager-to-please funeral director. Unable to tell her 'no,' he soon found himself her personal assistant/slave. Then, he found a rifle in his hand, and Marjorie lying dead on the garage floor.

There are a number of elements that keep this from being a straight-forward crime of passion, such as the fact Bernie was set to inherit Marjorie's millions ahead of her estranged children, the rumours of their romance despite his assumed homosexuality, and how he managed to fool everyone into thinking she was still alive for a further nine months before finally getting caught out (the titular comparison with Weekend at Bernie's is both unfortunate and hilarious). Black gives one of the best performances of his career, eschewing both snark and over-enthusiasm to make Bernie seem lovable, lonely, regretful, and perhaps just a little devious. He's marvellously ambiguous yet totally sympathetic, much like the movie Linklater and co-writer Skip Hollandsworth have built around him.

Black is ably supported by MacLaine, who does well to not veer into histrionics too frequently considering the shrieking, shrew-like nature of her character. Matthew McConaughey damn near steals the show (as he seems to be frequently doing these days) in the second half of the picture as headline-grabbing District Attorney Danny Buck; so slick and desperate for publicity, but unwilling to be swayed by all the citizens who encourage him to give little ol' Bernie an easy time on the stand. But what makes this such a special treat is the aforementioned fusion of styles. A collage of actors and real Carthaginians (occasionally speaking from a script) pass judgement or absolve Tiede of his crimes without ever really knowing the whole truth. We're placed in a similar position; asked to forgive a man guilty of murder merely for being overwhelmingly cordial, or condemn one of the rare souls on this Earth that is unendingly nice. Can you be a good person, and a killer? Bernie is an odd little gem, equal parts funny and tragic, and as modest as its setting.

3.5/5

Jack Black mostly submerges himself into the eponymous assistant funeral director who befriends elderly widows and likes musical theater. Linklater's film is a warm-hearted though gently parodic view of small town Texas life and characters. Indeed, the brief snippets of interviews with "locals" (some possibly real) are probably the funniest part of the movie, although nothing is laugh out loud funny. McConaughey overplays and MacLaine underplays. Ultimately this is just an unusual news story that is spun by a master director into a trifling yarn.

Interesting being that it was a true story. Loved Jack Black singing voice. Not a fav of mine however. Well done in that the real locals gave a true picture of what the person was really like. All a bit lack lustre.

This was much better than I expected - Jack Black - who usually just irritates me, has shown he has other talents. I enjoyed his singing and dancing and he is certainly an actor. Shirley MacLaine was her usual self but the the local people, non actors, were marvelous. The story, being based on a true story has a very unsatisfactory ending, but real life never ends and I could not imagine an alternative. It was all well done and worth watching. I usually complain that movies don't state at the start if it's a true story, this one did but I didn't believe it!!! I thought that was a joke.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Jack Black was exceptionally good, and Shirley McLaine is at her usual best. I loved the feel and warmth of this film even though it is a story of murder. Thought it was a very intelligent film made in a very unique style which made it a highly recommended film.

I was actually very surprised by this movie. . some films of true life situations are very bland but this was very, very well done, not being a big fan of Jack Black I thought he played this part exceptionally well, Shirley MacLaine as always the grumpy, difficult old lady and again she does it brilliantly, Matthew McConaughey wasn't at his best as the slow, town sherrffe with the Texas drawl, not his finest hour but then I have just seen him in 'Magic Mike' and he was sooooo gorgeous ! ! ! ! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this movie highly but it certainly isn't a comedy, it is more of a documentary of sorts.

IMPORTANT : this is based on a TRUE Story. With real locals being interviewed. Along with the actors. At first I was disappointed as more like a documentary. After watching the over all DVD. We both quite enjoyed it. We even went on and watch all the extra features.

Very droll and slow, to the point of being boring. A very unoriginal plot and a very uninspiring movie.

A brilliant, unique and unusual movie, made to appear to be a documentary with lots of interviews of locals. Perhaps rather too much of those interviews as they interrupt the story. The all-pervading religiousness is off-putting as well, albeit that's probably reality in that part of the world. Having the central character as a great actor, comedian and singer really makes the movie: Jack Black is a revelation of many talents.

One word - brilliant! Jack Black is a very talented man. He was superb in this - the role was made for him. Shirley MacLean we have seen before in her 'Weiser' incarnation, but this time there were no redeeming features. Matthew McConnaughey impressed greatly. I think his appearance being altered by some weight loss for an upcoming movie he was doing and his hair also really helped you to forget the good looks and incredible physique and really get into his role as the relentless prosecutor who will see justice done. Shades of Fargo here. The townspeople were just the icing on the cake. Absolutely one of the most entertaining movies I have seen.

Good acting, spot on for McConaughey but the storyline was not interesting enough. Black was convincing in this role but again should this story deserve a movie? It's been seen before and also the first half hour is just interviewed locals and you get more of those until the end which is quite of breaking the pace. I wouldn't say it is a comedy nor it is funny. You might ignore it if you are looking for the regular Jack Black. Nothing special.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Enjoying true stories I found this incredible. The selection of cast was perfect with each doing much research before their performance. I watched this movie twice and had differing opinions both times. One to think about. Wouldn't actually call it a comedy though.

Yes Jack Black was good in this and I have to admit this grudgingly as I don't rate him or McConaughey very highly, even though they are given god like status in the USA. Having said that, it was a larger than life characterisation and it had a touch of vaudeville to it and something about the whole deal was just a bit awry. Yes it was relatively entertaining but I couldn't really see the point of it. It left me pondering how close to reality it was and still left the question about the real Bernie's personality unsolved.

I'm hating myself for saying this: Jack Black is superb. He easily carries this cute little interview-style flick, and proves that, just maybe, the stupid roles he's played in the past may actually be the fault of the script writers and not his. I even watched the credits to check if it was him singing -- which it was. Remarkable. Pigs really can fly.
