Director: Michael Haneke
Actors: Arno Frisch, Ingrid Stassner, Angela Winkler, Ulrich Mühe

14 year-old Benny is the only son of a successful Austrian couple. Somewhat absorbed in their own lives and careers, he is often left to his own devices with his hi-tech gifts. Surrounded by TV and video images, electronic games and his beloved camcorder, Benny becomes increasingly removed from the real world, absorbed particularly with a tape of a pig being slaughtered. When his parents leave for a short holiday, Benny befriends a girl near his local video store and brings her home, taping their conversation before re-enacting his pet scene-and parents and son alike must come to terms with the enormity of this horrifying and senseless murder.

Michael Haneke is a very polarising director and this is perhaps one of his most polarising films. If you appreciate the director's vision, this is an intense and very graphic examination not only of the influences of the media in our lives but also on the choices that we make to protect our comfortable lives and those people that we love. If you don't, you'll find it ponderous and wholly unlikeable. Recommended for Haneke fans only.
