Set in 1931, Belle Epoque is the delightful tale of a young, handsome Spanish Civil War deserter named Fernando (Jorge Sanz) who seeks refuge with a generous artist, Manolo (Fernando Fernan Gomez) and finds himself in the middle of a romantic dilemma when Manolo's four beautiful daughters return home to the family nest and create all manner of mischief.

Distracted at every turn, Fernando is stifled by his many amorous possibilities. Which woman should he romance? Seemingly surrounded by attention, affection and inevitable seduction, Fernando soon finds himself overpowered by each of the flirtatious, high-spirited sisters. A lush and lascivious sensual romp in the tradition of Like Water for Chocolate and Jamon Jamon, celebrating newfound sexual freedom for women, Belle Epoque is a delicious dip into the glistening pool of romantic life.

Another Spanish comedy to savour and enjoy. Where do they come up with these weird storylines?

I enjoyed this film. Very Spanish and in many ways a modernisation of older classical Spanish films and plays. I enjoyed the low key approach and the gentle way the dramatic story unfolded. A knowledge of the politics of the time and the various characters reactions to them helps. The locations are well chosen and the acting excellent. A memorable film.

One of my favorite movies ever. Gabino Diego is just about the best actor ever to come out of Spain, he has made the wet blanket boyfriend into an art form. Only misses out on five stars due to the terrible analog to DVD conversion.
