Very intense movie, excellant actors, we enjoyed it very much but not the movie everyone would enjoy, great insight into how things were in the year 1066 between King and Church, good example why religion and politics should never be mixed

I found, of course, Burton and O'Toole wonderful lead characters in this film; they are afterall, the best of British theatre/film actors. What I had a problem with in this film is it's underlying misogyny - I found it rather uncomfortable - especially from O'Tooles Henry II character. The protagonists relationship reminded me of Brokeback Mountain - a male love affair that dare not speak it's name. Behind the scenes richard Burton had recently left his long suffering wife Sybil for Elizabeth Taylor and things were still up in the air post their Cleopatra romance - so if he seems especially doubting or searching for meaning in his role - it may be due to this. Or not!
