Science fiction violence and coarse language

Director: Jonathan Liebesman
Actors: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena, Ramon Rodriguez

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world - Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.

Michael Bay and Tony Scott made love to the American flag, birthed a demon spawn and called it Battle Los Angeles. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with a new landmark in the “loud, dumb, aggressively bad action blockbuster” genre. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has well and truly been usurped. Of course, not to be outdone, Bay will unleash the third Transformers film in a couple of months, so Battle L.A.’s reign may be short-lived. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. William Henry Harrison may have only been President of the United States for 32 days, but he was still the president. And Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle L.A. is still awful, and will remain awful, no matter how many louder, dumber films come along in the coming years.

Now, we can’t talk about Battle L.A. without talking about Aristotle’s principles of storytelling (obviously). Aristotle separated all narratives into two streams: those with simple plots, and those with complex plots. The mechanics of a simple plot are just that; a sequence of probable actions (cause and effect) that conclude with a change in fortune. And that is the plot of Battle L.A: aliens invade Earth; a final battle for dominance occurs in Los Angeles; a ragtag group of marines led by Aaron Eckhart go against the odds to stop the influx of extra terrestrial invaders. So far so good. I guess Aristotle was a fan of popcorn flicks after all. But Ari also went to great lengths to stress the importance of a three-act structure in drama. And this is where Battle L.A. falls apart, because where there should be a ‘beginning’, ‘middle’ and ‘end’, Liebesman substitutes in ‘NOISE!!!’

This is not an exaggeration. I know that using more than one exclamation mark to emphasise a word can often have the opposite effect, simply becoming an annoyance that doesn’t mean anything. Well, that is what Battle L.A. is!!!!!!!! A deafening, exclamation-mark-heavy blurt of poorly-defined sound-design. There are special effects too (I think), hidden in a fog of black smoke/dust/dirt, expertly avoided by a cinematographer (Lukas Ettlin, named and shamed) who must have been straddling a bucking bronco for the film’s entire shoot. When we finally see the alien invaders, we fully understand why they had been obscured from our view in the first place. I saw a similar-looking alien in a movie once, except it wasn’t a movie, it was the video game Duke Nukem 3D, and I was eight years old, and I didn’t think they were creepy or interesting then either. Maybe that’s fitting, because watching Battle LA is like watching your friend play a video game on the Sega Mega Drive. And I mean these days, not 13 years ago.

“But Simon, what of the script? Who cares if screenwriter Christopher Bertolini was unable to adhere to Aristotle’s three act principle? Some of the greatest screenplays ever written have defied it too! Did Bertolini make up for it with interesting, complex characters and human, naturalistic dialogue?” Well, I was about to start talking about that before you interrupted me, so you’ve embarrassed yourself. To answer those questions: 1) It’s bad. 2) That’s true. 3) Absolutely not. Here are some of the clichéd-to-the-point-of-inane lines shouted by the film’s central marine force: “I will go to hell and back with you sir.” “We leave no man behind.” “Marines don’t quit. Say it for me. Marines don’t quit!” You could write your own script based on variations of those three lines, and you’d pretty much have a word-for-word facsimile of the current screenplay. There are also a couple of lines that simply baffle: “Maybe I can help. I’m a veterinarian.” That’s got to be the first time that’s been said with a straight face in an action film.

The characters are introduced in the film’s first ten (relatively un-explodey) minutes. They are dispatched, almost without rhyme or reason, over the course of the next ninety. A commentary on the random cruelty of war? I wouldn’t give the picture that much credit. I guess Bertolini and Liebesman think they have to feature scenes in which a soldier kisses his pregnant wife goodbye and another where one prepares a wedding, as if Hollywood wouldn’t fund a war movie without them. And this is absolutely not an anti-war movie. The film is brimming with jingoistic pride; kind of like Starship Troopers without the self-awareness. At one point, a civilian picks up a gun and shoots at the aliens, only to be demolished almost instantly. Eckhart – who plays the staff sergeant, as if that matters – says, “He picked up a rifle and did what need to be done”. Later, someone suggests trying for a diplomatic solution with the aliens. Everyone laughs. No, this is definitely a pro-war film.

Actors such as Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Ne-Yo, Jim Parrack and a bunch of others were credited as the soldiers, but whichever ones they played I couldn’t tell past the film’s intro – such is the overwhelming amount of confusion and blurriness of the movie. I feel bad for all of them, and especially the normally great Eckhart, for having to debase themselves here. But I certainly don’t pity them over the audience that has to endure this blinding mess (including my girlfriend, who was so annoyed and unsettled by the shakycam work she threw up - in the cinema - halfway through the film).

Oh, and in case you were wondering, the aliens have invaded Earth because they want our liquid H20. They use it for their fuel. So, at the very least, that makes them a bit harder and more intimidating than the aliens in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs. In your face, you water-fearing, spindly-armed, easy-to-trap-in-a-cupboard lesser-terrestrials!

1/5

To the naysayers I'd say: stop thinking that movies are just video games with people. If you want a creature feature for the kids avoid this one. The ending is predictable but this is high action and looks more at the actions of the characters rather then the aliens. Time in not wasted on knowing the enemy, the storyline is fighting them although there is some character development. Certainly one of the better of the earth v (whoever) with good sets and believable weaponry.

Awesome movie. It drags on a little bit but its enjoyable mostly because its a war movie on the first place secondly its a SiFi. The aliens are not of the unbeatable kind thats what enjoyed me the most. It was almost like your watching a normal war movie just the enemy were from a different world for a change. Definitely for me a movie I would enjoy watching a again sometime.

Although this film was attacked by critics and the reviews were terrible, I did not agree. I really enjoyed this film. Yes, it was all action and gun-fire, but the story was there and the character develpment was enough that I was upset when the good guys died. After watching some of the films with high accolades from critics recently, I'm beginning to feel I will continue watching the ones they dislike. Overall, an enjoyable Sci-Fi/Action film.

Battle - Los Angeles is definitely the cliche American Alien movie. Basically Aliens have invaded earth and are after our water supply, so they need to exterminate all humans and take over our planet. As usually The American army comes to the rescue and saves the day. This is an entertaining, fun movie, a definitely enjoyable way to spend a few hours. If you are into the television series Falling Skies, you could almost imagine that this is the lead up to that series, however instead of metal they are after water. Lots of action and explosions, a good film.

(l0l) But just the trick for a few hours of mindless, fun , good looking entertainment.. Let’s kick some Alien A**!! :-)

A very entertaining film. It's not Citizen Kane, but then if you want quality, cerebral cinema go somewhere else! Battle: LA was a good war film that showed the random, meaninglessness of war effectively. It was edgy, dirty ad at times confusing which is a great protrayal of the 'fog of war'. Its warfare sequences are in the same company as Blackhawk Down and Saving Private Ryan. Yeah, some of the lines were a bit corney and the story was not Oscar material but if viewers can't get past that and enjoy the action, and Sci-fi concepts then they should stay with period dramas. it's great for what it is and should be expected to be nothing more.

I found that the concept of what the aliens looked like and behaved a little far fetched, the body armour and weapons where to be more advanced then us. What was presented was a superior force(the Alien) was battling an inferior force us. The concept is more believeable in the movie Cowboys v Aliens this movie is a smaller version of predator taken over the world.

I was captivated by the first couple of minutes then we went to a flashback in time so we could see the backstories of all the main characters. Unfortunately the stories of these characters fell short and I found myself thinking "I don't care about these people". From then on the movie was a disappointment. Boring characters with terrible dialogue, an absolutely terrible script. The special effects were the only highlight but the movie isn't worth watching for that. I wasn't going to watch it until the end but my hubby said I should. Wish I hadn't!

Fast paced, character driven story about an alien invasion. As the title suggests, the action takes place in Los Angeles. Film style varies between hand-held, documentary and standard 3rd person movie. Similar to Cloverfield and ID4; however much cleaner than Cloverfield and more "realistic" than ID4. Suggest for fans of the genre, or action movies in general.

I like action films and first person shooter video games and yet I found this movie awful. Maybe 12 year old boys might like it but the dialogue is so simple and contrived it is offensive. That is probably why you don't really care when characters are killed off you have no sympathy with them at all. The effects are fine but I never got caught up in the action.

Was pretty keen to see this at the cinema. The idea is pretty good - an alien invasion told at squad level. However, the script is full of cliches - from a hero called back into active service days before retirement, to the gaping weakness in the alien army's technology (though not as ridiculous as Independence Day). Aaron Eckhardt shows a lot more depth then your usual action hero, and the action comes thick and fast. The director tries to keep things feeling gritty and realistic and lets you see things from the soldiers' perspective but this often leaves you lost as to what is actually happening in some of the sequences. Ultimately, if you're after a gritty war movie crossed with extra-terrestrials - you still can't go past James Cameron's Aliens.

This is so irredeemably awful. And I normally love trashy disaster/action films. Ugh. Just terrible. Nobody seems capable of even mimicking acting, the most unlikeable characters I've even seen, and there was obviously a decision made to sacrifice big disaster pr0n scenes to allow characters to develop...just horrible. I am hoping that when I eject the DVD the disc has self combusted so that nobody goes through this pain again.

I loved this movie. It was action all the way. And the special effects were awesome even by today's high standards. I particularly loved the way they followed a small group of marines and their mission instead of trying to be all things to all people story wise. The characters were well fleshed out and believeable and no character was safe from being killed. It was like a war movie just with aliens instead of the standard human adversaries. Definitely a purchase for my collection.

Not a bad entry into the hostile alien takeover genre, but I must admit I was expecting a little more alien action. The aliens weren't all that frightening and, although there were lots of explosions and action, the story was a bit predictable and it was really hard to find a character you could really care about. I preferred Skyline, which came out around the same time.

A decent alien invasion action movie. I had heard nothing but bad reviews for the movie so I was pleasantly surprised. Control centers for the alien Airforce was a decent idea as far as a gimmick for humanity to win (lets face it, if you have the technology to travel between stars, your going to kick our ass - its in the resistance after that point where we co-opt your technology that we take back our planet :)) 3 stars

I was going to have a go at Simon for being so mean but after reading his review, I have to concede that, although there was a lot of action, most of the movement probably was the shakey camera and my trying to avoid the many loud explosions by shifting in my seat. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie for a long time but I guess it really was quite bad, especially that ending. I was so disappointed. There had better NOT be a sequel! May the next alien invasion movie be original and steady - NO MORE "Blair Witch" camera action, pleeeeeease!! We are all so over it now.
