Strong coarse language and sexual references

Director: Roger Donaldson
Actors: Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows, Stephen Campbell Moore, Daniel Mays

Inspired by the infamous 1971 robbery that took place at the Lloyd's Bank in Marylebone London, the highly-charged heist thriller tautly interweaves high-level corruption, murder and sexual scandal in 1970s England. A car dealer with a dodgy past and new family, Terry (Jason Statham) has always avoided major-league scams. But when Martine (Saffron Burrows), a beautiful model from his old neighbourhood, offers him a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London's Baker Street, Terry recognizes the opportunity of a lifetime. Martine targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewellery. But Terry and his crew don't realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal that spans London's criminal underworld, the highest echelons of the British government, and the Royal Family itself... the true story of a heist gone wrong... in all the right ways.

As mentioned in the first few moments of the film, The Bank Job is based on a true story. How much of the movie is based on fact, and how much is based on rumour is difficult to say. Man alive, I hope it's all true. Although the title of the film implies your standard heist-caper, The Bank Job is anything but. When the crims walk away with their bags of money (and much more) only an hour into the film, you know something is up. And then the fun begins. Based on the 1971 Baker Street Robbery, the film takes a speculative look at the events that preceded and followed what should have been a simple job. Jason Statham plays Terry Leather, a former crim struggling to go straight. An old friend, Martine Love (Burrows), turns up with information regarding the Lloyds Bank vault, and the possibili...

An old friend, Martine Love (Burrows), turns up with information regarding the Lloyds Bank vault, and the possibility of leaving London (and his debts) behind. At first Terry is suspicious, but he nonetheless rounds up the old crew for one last job. He really should have trusted his first instincts.

Martine is actually under the thumb of MI5, who are using her to contact local villains. You see, within the vault is a safe-deposit box containing very naughty photographs starring a member of the royal family. They don't want to get their hands dirty, so in walks Terry and his unsuspecting crew. For those of you worried about me giving away the films secrets, it's OK. Everything I’ve mentioned is revealed in the first 15 minutes. The film doesn't exactly twist and turn like most heist movies. Instead, we watch as the criminals find out the truth, and in the final 40 minutes of the film, see their best laid plans unravel. I will say, that a lot of people's hands get dirty.

Jason Statham is, as always, awesome in this film. He has become one of the most appealing action leads of the last few years. For those who don't appreciate his more low-brow efforts such as Crank and The Transporter, this is an intelligent vehicle that allows him to show off his talents, other than kicking people in the face. Director Roger Donaldson does a pretty good job of keeping the film moving at a cracking pace. He wrangles the continually sprawling (but very talented) supporting cast well, and balances the drama and comedy effectively (although there is far less comedy than is implied by the trailer).

Apparently, there was a 'deep-throat'-esque advisor that helped in the making of this film, only fuelling the possibility that the events depicted here are indeed fact. Although I mentioned at the start of the review that I hope that is the case, I suppose it doesn't really matter. The film stands up on its own as good entertainment, and has enough intelligence, violence and nudity to rise above more conventional (read: boring) heist films. And, just briefly, you get to see Jason Statham kick someone in the head. The Bank Job delivers much more than its title claims. Let's just hope the royal family doesn’t see it.

3.5/5

This is a great story, made into an excellent film. You need to sit on the edge of your bed, not knowing what may happen next. The casting has been very well done and the production is superb. Do not choose this movie unless you enjoy the excellence of a British production. Highly recommended by me!

What starts out as a lightweight bank heist movie suddenly turns dark and gripping. Typical tight British movie with good acting by all. "Inspector Poirot" is particularly good as a sleasy Porn King. Because it's a period movie (and based on fact) it will date well and in time could become a classic.

As the story is based on actual events the plot is not as predictable or spectacle or ridiculous as similar movies. I enjoyed this movie because it was more real than most similar plotted movies. Good action, no super heroes, no studid action, just a good story.

Entertaining enough as a by the numbers heist thriller but too many undernourished plot threads and a general lack of depth. But what were you expecting?

Really bad acting. This shouldnt even have a rating. Real time waster, no reality in it at all. Worse than a low budget no name actors film. Really disappointed

Hmmm, I wonder what the Queen thought about this film! Its main fascination for me was its claim to be based on fact! The background music was somewhat over-dramatic at times, building up suspense for even trivial passages, when nothing of substance actually eventuated. The story line was interesting, but a little unbelievable when frantic efforts were being made to locate the bank in which a robbery was occurring. Given that this was based on a true story, gaps in security were simply astonishing. The policeman seemed unfazed about someone doing jack-hammering in a bank- just keep down the noise please! The moral is certainly to avoid building bank vaults over underground tunnels! I liked the touch of accidentally discovering a long-lost burial chamber for plague victims.

People who know me are going to say that I am prejudiced in favour of British made films. This is not the case, but I really did like this film. Wonderfully acted and meticulously filmed. I was living in London at the time and remember the bank job well as it was so prominent in the news. What I did not expect was that the film so wonderfully recreated the period and the times, that I was transported back and felt like I was reliving the period. An American friend of mine always says that British television and movies are an opportunity for ugly people to work....but my rejoinder is "at least they can act" !! :-)

Good pace, good story and lots of different characters. Good to see Jason Statham doing something a little different but his range doesn't seemt o be that huge. He's still very likeable though. Saffron Burrows is gorgeously devious and the rest of the supporting cast does a fine job. Recommended.

Seeing that the photo of her was supposed to be as she lay hanging upside down from end of bed.....reckon you'd have trouble recognising anyone! Medium good I reckon. Nice in that it was not too violent like American movies, you'd almost call this family viewing. Acting and script were good.....YES I did really like the early 70s feel. Would watch again but not in a hurry.

Love Jason Statham in all of his movies and this is no exception. Fantastic movie and definately a must see. I would like to know who the royal is though because of some of the other members coments about her not being a redhead. I'd also love to know what happened to the photo's and who has them now?! Very interesting movie but it does leave me with a lot of questions I want answered - but obviously they won't be. :S BRILLIANT MOVIE - DEFINATELY A MUST SEE!!!!!!

Saw this movie at the cinema because I had won tickets from Quickflix. I was intrigued to know who the royal was that had been photographed in some compromising situation. I had my thoughts on who it was, which proved to be correct and it was not a redhead! The Bank Job amateur robbers did very well for themselves, getting to keep what they took in return for some important information and photos. I loved the sights around the city and underground, the fashion on the time. It was a blast from the past. I enjoyed the movie and will see it again on DVD.
