Leo McCarey (Going My Way, An Affair To Remember) won a 1937 Best Director Oscar and star Irene Dunne was nominated for The Awful Truth, one of the most captivating screwball comedies ever made. A comic battlefield presided over by two superbly matched sparring partners, The Awful Truth also stars Cary Grant as the other half of a couple facing divorce - and fighting over custody of their beloved dog, Mr. Smith.

Somewhere before the final divorce decree, however, Jerry decides he wants Lucy back, only to learn that she's marrying a country bumpkin (hilariously played by Ralph Bellamy). Jerry counters with an engagement to the aristocratic Molly Lamont, sparking a sexy, sophisticated battle of the wits that ranks among the wackiest comedies in screen history!

Overated comedy that doesn't quite have wit and momentum to make it a true classic. While the storyline by itself is interesting it just doesn't work as well as it should. As usual Cary Grant puts in an entertaining performance.

Although it's a bit dated, it was quite witty and the story moved along at a good pace. Certainly entertaining enough for such an old movie.

sophisticated as anything in its day, it has a slightly dated feel but rattles along completely on the charm of its wonderful leads.

Much much better than expected. I thought this might be a bit of an old boring movie, but it was witty, and suprisingly sophisticated. Too bad it's not in colour too, as sets and constumes look gorgeous, but can't have it all.
