I missed this at the cinemas at the time - so this was a first viewing. Yes - Dances with Wolves meets Bambi. Yes cliched, with a somewhat predictable story line. But it had enough originality to be very watchable. I really liked the use of known/plausible science under-pinning some of the story: years of flight to our closest interstellar neighbour, "plausible" space-craft design, Cyro-sleep, unobtainium needed for lighter super-conductivity to handle the massive electromagnets of the matter - anti-matter engines. Most of these details aren't explained in the film, but give a foundation must better than a lot of other fictional fluff with warp drives, easy inter-spicies interaction and down-right junk science. In the end the science was thrown away in favor of killing the nasty, greedy humans and joining a group-hug around our neural-networked trees. But hey - we all had fun on the journey.
One I own. Absolutely beautiful to watch and a really great story to boot. One to watch over and over.
The special effects where worth seeing.
Beautifully made movie, looked beautiful on IMAXX. Looses something on the TV but still very watchable. Would be nice if the story was a little less stereotyped in places but still a great movie. Really loved all the forest critters they came up with.
Watched it in the theatre twice, and now on DVD once. One of the most real true to future interplanatary life and its special effects, absolutely mindblowing. Will watch it again. Even far better than Star Wars.
Dances With Wolves meets Star Wars - i'm one of those party poopers that doesn't join the "we love avatar" bandwagon. It's still very watchable with brilliant special effects but the storyline is completely unoriginal and recycled.
When I first watched this movie at the cinemas my partner and I went home totally dissapointed we were human. It isnt quite the same without 3D but still amazing!
Special effects, including makeup and costumes, interesting. Worthwhile as a study of brutal cultural and environmental exploitation. Storyline a bit too much like Lord of the Rings.
Overpriced cartoon if you asked me...... however somehow it did grab me.. to the point that Ive seen it 3 times now. The more you see it the more you love it I guess... but I still cant get over the fact that more than 80% is animated.. which is a big negative or me,.. Its sort of the smurfs on steroids I guess...
Pulls all the right strings to draw you in and make you sympathise with the core of the plot and characters, but then un-insightfully and awkwardly moves them to the background to push the implications of a pseudo-intellectual premise that under-delivers. Patronisingly simple-minded and heavy-handed themes sucked all the enjoyment out of this for me. Also too many recycled images, characters, and moments for a film aiming to wow with wide-eyed imaginative immersion.
Hubristic - In five years the serious-ness with which it takes its now outdated CG content and the clumsy environmentalist message will make this film a laughing stock.
Dances With Wolves in space meets Titanic, from a Disney wanna-be. Watch the two other movies, and a few Disney classics instead.
Wow....the gentleness mixed with the violence ...the war and peace dynamic....only makes you yearn for peace more. This movie was wonderful.
awefull if you want a movie with only special effects and not much else this is for you. worst movie ive ever watched dont understand why everyone likes it
Great special effects and scenery. I loved how the aborigine people of the land were connected with the trees and nature through their tails and to a kind of spirit like humans. It was also romantic which I enjoyed.
I just love Avatar I rated it 5 out of 5
Seeing it in cinema in 3D was even more spectacular... Lots of fighting scenes towards the end. Great virtual landscapes, and fauna and flora, luminescent forest, etc. Happy ending. Great entertainment! Pro-ecology message. SPECTACULAR!
Amazing to watch and the story is engaging too.
Awesome! A movie that could be watched again and again.
Really true to what is happening over there
I've held out seeing this one for a long time. Was pleasantly surprised, not only were the visual effects pretty impressive but quite a touching storyline.
Great movie - attention to detail was fantastic and I think every emotion was tapped into during this story.
cmon tnt dont tell me it didnt deserve atleast 3 stars? mmmmaaaate!
loved this movie. Great sub themes of community and environment.
One of the best sci-fi movie ever seen , Our Australian Actor played his biggest and best role ever Couldn't stop watching it saw it on the big screen and now on the little screen just as thrilling and enhanced
A pretty picture to watch, such a pity that the story is so corny!
Amazing, but something in it was lacking, will get and watch again in a few weeks and see if I can pick what.
At this stage only 4 stars if I cannot find the missing bit then may take to 5 stars. Over all great movie and would reccommend to others.
Brilliant movie. No hesitation in watching it again and agin. Fantastic scenery. What more can you say.
the move was great.
the dvd had problems at approx 16 minutes in
Very good although some of the All-American characters were as nauseous as they were meant to be. The special effect and animation was top rate.
Only good thing about this movie is the animation. The important aspect, ie. Acting, Story etc. fails with abundance. This movie is for people who like to look at pretty things with no substances.
Fabulous storyline and great entertainment for the whole family.
It's certainly not one of the greatest movies of all time as many said upon its initial release, but James Cameron's sci-fi epic certainly draws you and holds you for the 150 minute runtime with great ease through a rehashing of already known stories and an appropriate and excellent use of CGI.
It's visually appealing but I found the story pretty weak considering how much hype it got when it came out.
Amazing movie but the music was to loud and I couldn't hear alot of the dialogue
Great animations good story
A brilliant cast and an incredible director. When watching this movie, its like you are transported to another world.
Its awesome to switch on the dvd player and escape reality from time to time. This movie allows you to forget about everything else and become lost in a a different world completely. it had great actors and a compelling storyline. unlike anything i have ever seen, very refreshing to escape the same old storyline done a hundred different times in a hundred different ways. great movie.
Wanted to see it because of all the hype but a little disappointed. Special effects were great but same old 'Pocahontas' storyline and a tad too long in my opinion (150 mins could have been edited down to 120 mins).
Incredible movie with a fantastic environmental message hidden behind the action and scenery-one to watch over and over
A total disappointment - very old dialogue, very old plot and the visuality just didn't make up for the extremely old hat story plus the DVD kept stopping, sticking and not playing properly
Great movie. Don't know why we took so long to get around to seeing it. Wonderful storyline and special effects.
grandkids loved it, so did I
Having missed this highly rated movie at the cinema in 3D I wasn't disappointed watching it on my HDTV, the story line, special FX where stunning, a wonderful tale of a realationship between two beings, and the protectioin of their environment and their race, and beleif in each other. Visually stunning.
Very wierd film. Visually it is pretty spectacular at times, but some of the dialogue is so cliche that a film 10 years in the making should be so much more. Sigourney Weaver - "where are my effen cigarettes. What's wrong with this picture people?" Is it just me or do her characters repeat? And the blue people chanting and swaying under the magical lights tree felt really corny and bizarre. Sprituality and sci-fi just don't partner well.
Rather boring and little story line so spent half of my time on the fast forward on remote. Seen better CGI on computer games.
Great loved it. This is how energy really works for us. Must see
didn't want to see it, not my kind of movie, but again the 6 year old won. Not as bad as thought but still a bit too fantasy for me!! good watch for kids though
Great Movie. The Special effects are just brilliant
I took a long time to take a look at Avatar, the blue people a bit dawnting, but I really enjoyed it, and fully recommend to other viewers, most enjoyable
Loved this at the movies in 3D but it didn't have the same appeal on DVD
I loved Avatar. The 3D was amazing. The fantasy and just the purity of the Avatar people was amazing.
Like James Cameron's Titanic, this - his latest film - is big and entertaining.
I didn't like Titanic as it had too many one dimensional characters, but I found the time went quickly as I watched which is a good sign that at least it was entertaining.
Avatar is much the same - it uses every military cliche in the book, the baddies and one-dimensionally bad and the goodies are equally shallow. But the time watching it goes quickly so it does the job...
It was nice too see a film where the goodies are the indigenous population, although I'm sure some people will want to label the film and dismiss it as left-wing for that reason.
I enjoyed it but, like Titanic, it could have been so much more.
This story is so much like a modern cowboys and indians or dancers with wolves maybe. I don't usualy like anamation but you can willingly suspend disbelief. The good thing with DVD is that you can opt out for a break caus it's so long. I was entertained.
\Getting Avatar was a mistake - we don't like this sirt of movie
The picture was great however i think the story line etc would be best suited to online gamers and enjoyers of xbox, and playstation gamers. I walked off and did housework rather than watching it .
I can see why this movie won so many awards. I must be one of the few that didn't see it at the pictures in 3D, but it is still breathtakingly good enough in 2D, showing the destructiveness and greed of the human race.
Far-fetched but still interesting as we always want the good guys to win. Good acting.
loved what I could see
I was unable to see the rest as the DVD was stuffed......
Great acting and great storyline. Too long for my liking as I'm not into science fiction movies.
The animation was great in creating the amazing world of the Pandora.
enjoyed this movie, found it different and interesting
Wow Avatar I wasn't even going to watch it because a got a lot of bad reviews from other but I'm so glad I watch it I loved and the graphics and special effects were awesome
Far, far better than I expected, despite the rather ridiculous story line. I didn't see it on the big screen because I didn't think I'd like it. I think that may have been a mistake - the effects would have been spectacular. There's supposed to be a meaningful theme in there somewhere, but it's lost amongst the visual display. Worth a look if you don't want anything deep.
Really great movie!!! Great Drama
the whole family enjoyed this movie ...
was watched over and over before return
Enjoyed DVD but was scratchy in 2 places (noted with DVD when returned). By fast forwarding each time it was OK.
Worst movie story line I have ever seen in a movie!
Slow to start but got better the further it went, amazing special effects.
Loved it. Much more enjoyable than I was expecting. Great way to spend an evening.
spectacular imagery. storyline a bit predictable. Very similar themes to Matrix and Terminator. Worth watching. Would be awesome in 3D.
Was predictable and I agree a bit too long. Overall it was good but not exactly living up to the hype. Having said that I would watch it again in the future. I do recommend it though for those who havent seen it.
unexpectedly marvellous...watched it twice.. the special effects were amazing
Fantastic movie, even better the second time around as you get to concentrate more on the story instead of looking at the scenery. I cannot believe this movie didn't win the Academy Award as it is just great.
No usually a Sci-Fi fan, or fan of big commerically made films - but this was an exception. Yes, it does take a little while to get into, but once you're in you don't realise you're sitting in a three hour film! Incredible Special Effects - seeing it in 3d at the movies was definitely a highlight of this film also!
Excellent effects, it would be amazing in 3D. I enjoyed this film once it got going, (it's a bit slow to start with), and very much enjoyed seeing America NOT save the world for once.
A great example of modern imperial/colonial activity, this sort of stuff did not end with the death of Truggernana after all. Even in Science Fiction it seems that some things are sad but true.
I'm not normally hugely into sci-fi movies - but i loved this - absolutely brilliant! I only wish I'd seen it at the movies in 3D!
Saw this in 3D IMAX when it was first out and really enjoyed it, got taken in by the visuals and creativity of James Cameron. Now that I have seen the DVD as well, I would still recommend this movie highly, but if you can see it in 3D and on a big screen, then that's a must. I found it lost a lot in the transition to small screen and looked a lot more cartoon-ish. The story is still terrible and predictable and cliched, but it's still a terrific flick.
After hearing so many rave reviews, I was worried the movie would disappoint......but it didn't! Absolutely awesome movie in everyway, and definitely one to buy for the home collection.
Love Avatar...could watch it over and over
I've heard so much about this show and finally managed to watch it (unfortunately not 3D or Blu-Ray). I really enjoyed this movie. I had all the elements I like, it had romance, fantasy, sci-fi, action and as usual we have the good vs the bad guys, with predictably, the good guys winning (of course). I would watch the movie again on Blu-Ray and/or 3D and see the technical brilliance that people are raving about but even without all that, I story as it is can stand on its own.
I already own a copy and don't want to be asked to review it. If you ask me....it's Fern Gully meets Dances With Wolves-Beyond Thunderdome...
Having seen it at the cinema, I was once again impressed and captivated by this larger-than-life fantasy flick, which pits the good guys (Sam W.
Loved the film but it could have been a bit shorter
Would be hard to find a better movie
Just as enjoyable the third time around. Best watched if you have at least 5.1 surround sound. Sigourney and Sam are brilliant in both roles - as humans and Avatars. James Cameron's special effects and imagery are simply stunning
Top class movie! Not only are the SFX of the best quality, but the story moved me emotionally in every direction. Trulu passes the test of a great movie!
This was very disappointing after all the hype. Certainly, the animations were excellent, but sadly, turned the film into a very lengthy cartoon!!
Possibly, in the theatre and in 3D, it would have been quite a spectacle, but on the small screen, nothing to get excited about. Frankly, special effects alone, do not a movie make!!
Great special effects offset by the worst script in living memory. Could have been so good.
effects brilliant. very american. good defeats evil , good feeling movie
Hated it - weird - glad I didn't bother seeing it at the movies.
Great movie, special effects were fantastic, we enjoyed it and don't believe it has to be seen in 3D.
A little predictable but overall good. It keeps you interested and you actually dont know you've been watching it for 2.5 hours. recommended
alright movie, but i'm not sure why it was so popular and talked up. The story was pretty predictable and had way too much of an political agenda to it. When i watch a movie, i want to be entertained and enjoy it, not given a 3hr presentation on James Cameron's political views on America and their many wars etc. Not sure if i could be bothered watching it again.
the viuals were realy good but the story was bad seriously 500 million dollers do what we could have done with that money as in humanatarion things 500m and you couldnt come up with something original the floating island - gulavers travel everything was copyied exept for the tail thing i wouldnt rave about this one realy 500 million dollars please
fantastic loved it seen it on big screen in 3D not quite as good in 2D but still impressive
Probably this would have been better in 3D in the theatre than on my not 3D TV. I'm sure it was a spectacle and there is still some wow-ness that comes through on the small screen. However, after a promising start, this descended into Battle of the Ewoks for the 21st century. Still, Cameron knows how to spend money for maximum audience manipulation and the heart of the story (though cliche-ed) is in the right place.
loved it..... Great Movie
A good movie with good use of colour and animation. Recommended
I'm not really a fan of the sci-fi movies and ones that rely on a lot of CGI. I'd heard a lot about this movie and wanted to see what the fuss was about. For the first 20 minutes or so, I was wondering what the point of the movie was. Then the love story started happening and that was nice and probably the only thing that kept me watching the movie. I think if you can get past your dislike for scf-fi and CGI (which I have to admit was well done) and just focus on the love story and people who stand up for their beliefs and for others, its not bad. I wouldn't say the acting of the humans in this movie was spectacular or worthy of any awards, but it was interesting to see Sigourney Weaver in another Alien-esuqe movie.
Brilliant ! OMG just a really good movie ..
CGI effects are great but not much of a movie really. Not particularly inspiring, didn't make me sad or happy, didn't make me laugh. Just a bit blah really.
One of the best sci fi movies I have ever seen. On a par with Alien.
The background message of an aggressive corporation focused ion shareholder profit and their disregard for the environment and different cultures formed teh framework for the plot.
Enjoyed the love story too. The filom was so good that I quickly forgot that the two main characters were blue.
Best movie I have seen 4 years. loved the special effects and the storyline was great.
I really enjoyed this movie, loved the effects and was taken in by the love story. All in all an enjoyable flick.
Well, what a surprise this was. I really loved this movie. Had a great story and the effects were out of this world.
This is the best movie i have seen so far and loved it. The special effects were great.
Best movie of the year so far.
Great movie if you life sci-fi with a human touch.
Great movie, visually spectacular, very enjoyable. The whole family loved it.
Visual extravaganza. We loved it, the story, the concept, the special effects...I would recommend it to anyone.
Absoulutely awesome. Woild have been better at the movies in 3D, but great movie
Fantastic Movie, loved it.
Great special effects, worth watching, would be good to see on the big screen
Wow, wish I had seen it on the big screen. Nice attack on corporate bullies
I enjoyed Avatar very much, I don't know if the storey that was in it was ment, but you could see that it told of what the human race is really like. If the people of power wont something the they wont stop untill they get it, you see it all over the todays work.
But in all it was a very good movie, the special affects was great, in all I found no fults in the moie so I give it a five.
I read the last 20 or so reviews and this movie polarised the viewers: you either hated it or loved it.
I am one of the last! The msg has been repeated over many movies, but still those that hated the movie obviously didn't listen nor 'see it'. Acting was well done, and very believable (the baddie was a bit 'clichéd' bad, only the black hat was missing), but the main actor and his mission and change of heart..... In real life this has happened very often. The graphics.... well 11 out of 10 especially in 3D! On my 46" screen it looked excellent in the cinema it looked frighteningly realistic! A must see and asap I will get a 3D set up, so I can see this movie again in 3D!
Yawn! Yes its very pretty, but thats about all and you can be very pretty in half an hour, which is about all the time that was needed to expound what little plot was there.
was interesting for a while but then you could guess what would happen in the end. over hyped, too long and turned in to a war movie.
Loved this film, great story, not one boring moment, I would watch this movie again with out getting bored.
I waited a long time to see this movie but was not disappointed.I think it's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.Having read the other reviews on this page I can't help feeling a little sorry for the ones that have lost the little child in them and to see the movie for what it is.(A momentary escape from reality.)A feel good movie. In my opinion it was definatly worth an award.
P.S. I'll bet the kids that were old enough to see it enjoyed it.
It was fantastic and I enjoyed watching this film, I felt if I was in another world.
Great acting and iminatation characters, very well done with the scenery. Will watch again and possible buy the DVD for keep for future watching.
THIS MOVIE IS H***Iawsome AND DEFINTLEY A MUST WACTH
GOOD STROY LINE AND NO BORING BITS
Unimpressive, no story, wouldn't waste my money on it again
fell in and out of consciousness watching this long drawn out movie. once you have seen the special effects there's really nothing much more to it. big let down...
I enjoy Sci-Fi so this appealed to me. Sigourney Weaver is generally good value and does not disappoint.
I will be adding this to my collection.
I watched it again the next day I enjoyed it so much.
This film was better than I expected it to be, I throughly enjoyed.
Yes - the story itself barely lifts above cliche, but what a wonderfully imagined world. I was sceptical but in the end just let myself go with it and really enjoyed it. It's always a bit of a shame to see movie after movie degenerate into the sort of gun fights and military might that America seems to love but overall it was worthwhile and full of wonderful imaginative touches - and, of course, the good guys won despite the oppressive might and muscle of the enemy!
Sure - done with a lot of effort and James Cameron is a great director. However to enjoy this movie you must be a SciFi fan - I'm not. It has a bit a green message but I prefer a docu such as 'The Cove' to be reminded that we should change our behaviour to preserve the planet for future generations.3 stars for the effort and for the director :-)
I wish, wish, wish, wish I'd seen this at the cinemas in 3D. Like very few other people, I fobbed it off, thinking it was all a load of hype and that I'd just rent it on DVD and think it was so-so, but the imagery was spectacular. Luckily, I watched it on a 42" HD LCD, so I got a good effect, but as I watched the movie I could 'see' what would have been jumping off the screen at me. While the look of the movie was brilliant, unfortunately the story was cliche and unoriginal. We all recognise this story as a deadringer for Pocahontas, but you know, that still didn't deter me. Yes, it's an old, obvious story, but it was done in such a spectacle that you can look past it, and you know what? I can watch Pocahontas over and over again and still love it, so I think I'll be doing the same with this one.
I found myself yelling at the screen, in awe of the scenery and falling in love with the characters. Sam Worthington was very, very good in this role.
Glad I finally saw it, brilliantly done.
It's a shame there was so much hype. I expected more.
awesome Best Movie I have seen in years
Excellent movie which lived up to all of the hype. Great special effects.
Fantastic Film just loved it!! awesome special effects, great story good all round film.
ok, worth watching but i don't get what all the hype was about
Amazing movie. Loved every minute of it. Will watch it again.
I was so impessed I watched it 3 times. Each time it got better and I understood more of the story. After reading some of the other reviews from disgruntled viewers I am amazed at how some people have become so hard to please. Here we have in this movie the very latest in cgi effects yet they didn't like it! What does it take to please some people? Then there are those who thought the story was corny. It is true there are probably no really new stories, just rehashes of old ones, but the writers wove a tale that was topical and relevent given our modern way of thinking that 'greed is good' and we should exploit every natural resource regardless of the cost. The love element was well done although perhaps a forgone conclusion. The connection to the spiritual side of their lives was something that we could all do well to think about. Our own spiritual well being seems to be something many people are oblivious to or simply refuse to acknowledge, a case of what you can't see doesn't exist. I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars for imagination, scenery, charactors and story line, it's a masterpiece.
Rubbish old story line with the appearance of a normal animated movie in most parts to me. Prefer to watch Lion King or Toy Story instead! I suppose hype helps recover costs!
Fantastic film even though the goodies versus the baddies theme is a bit cheesy. The special effects were great and Sam Worthington was amazing as the main character.
Wow. Imagine if Lukas had let these guys make the latest 3 Star Wars. Technology story line (not a common combination these days) = master piece
Probably one of the few people who did not see this in 3D first.
It was a enjoyable movie, visually very impressive with plenty of action.
Unfortunately the story was unoriginal and full of the usual cliches.
Just as most of my friends said, "great movie", totally different, must be another one to be made going by the ending.
Just wish my TV and surround worked properly to really enjoy all the effects. But was well worth the watch. I'd say "Not to be missed"
Great CGI, but I honestly cant see what all the fuss was about
I was totally blown away by this movie.. Sure the story line is a rehash from many other epic movies but it was really well put together with the most amazing CGI ever to hit the screens. But the core of the story being about the humans ignorance of the connectedness of nature and the blind consumerist mentality, no respect for that which is not understood, and willingness to destroy anything that gets in the way of plundering, was what really hit home for me.
I manage to last 45 minutes before turning it off. The CGI yes is fantastic what a shame they didn't actually hire a decent writer.
Had no pre-conceved ideas about the movie. Was pleasently suprised when it started. took a while to deceide who was who. The graphics were unbielivable, as was the story. fantastic acting , as was everything about the movie
What a fuss about nothing. This is essentially an animated cartoon. Much preferred the "real actor" parts of this movie. Profoundly disappointing. James Cameron spent 10 years on this? I'd rather watch Titanic (and listen to the theme song) over and over than sit through this again.
Great CGI but really not sure what all the hype was about - i found the story-line kind of boring and predictable.
Fantastic movies with great characters and acting. Visually pleasing would be fantastic at the cinema or in 3D.
awesome! I love this movie. Definately buying it! 5 stars.
I loved this movie. Lots of colour and imagination.Cant wait for the next installment.
Loved this! The special effects were great. Several times during the movie, I found myself saying "WOW"! I really enjoyed the characters, the storyline, and like I said, the visual experience was gob-smackingly great!
Only one word is needed - AWESOME!
I thought this movie was really clever and very well done. An original idea and the visuals were amazing. I found the characters quite life-like. The only downside to this movie is it is 2 1/2 hours long, so make sure you have plenty of time to watch it.
Good visuals, rubbish story.
Wow, what a waste of money. The visual effects are impressive but I’m I surprised didn’t spew from the cheesy dialog and the bold and bountiful style of acting that was on display.
LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Original story with drama, fun, morality, tears and romance! The attention to detail within the story and within the world of Pandora and it's people made you feel a connection with them. I was so pro-Na'vi by the end of the film I wanted to jump out of my seat to help protect them and their home! Incredibly amazing effects and could see it over and over again.
Overlong fantasy sci-fi actioner that is somewhat uninspired and lifeless. The special effects are OK but the blue palette throughout gets tiring.
I missed a lot of the hype leading up to this film, so had no real idea what it was about, but all the good reviews convined me to go see it anyway, and I'm glad I did.
Perhaps the acting isn't the best, and people have complained about the lack of depth to the characters, but to me this movie wasn't entirely about the central characters, rather it was about all the people of Pandora, and the accepted truth of what would happen if the human race ever found a way to travel to amongst the stars.
Cameron's concepts of a world where every creature has it's importance, and all can communicate through a special bond was inspiring.
The creatures were so real, and the actors interaction with these cgi creations was so flawless, you could almost believe they really existed !
I've read the reviews of some members who complain of the cliches, but what these people fail to realise is the human race is so slow to learn from it's biggest mistakes, unless people like Cameron continue to highlight our shortcomings, we will never learn to do better.
So I found the movie exciting, entertaining, awe inspiring (for the creation of the world and it's amazing creatures), as well as a little educational.
I definately recommend you see it at least once on the big screen, you won't regret it.
Liked the movie, special effects were brilliant, found the movie a bit overlong, but as said by another member the females that watched gave it a higher rating than males.
Awesome the best movie of 2009 since district 9!
An excellent film. I think the special effects far outweigh the story line which is quite slow. On my second viewing i found myself looking at the watch. It is however visually amazing, the colours and deep landscapes will looks amazing in Blu-ray. If you missed it at the movies this is your chance to visit Pandora in all its glory.
This will be a movie you will never forget. One that must be seen at the cinemas to truly capture it's scope and magnificence.
The story itself has many deeper meanings, and so many concepts like connection with nature and all living things were put forth, but not only that, you ended up feeling this connection through the Na'Vi and their pain eventually becomes your pain.
There aren't enough superlatives to describe how good this movie is: from the visuals, acting, script, editing and the emotional drive behind all aspects of the story, there are no letdowns.
Just do yourself a favour... go and see it at the cinemas. You won't regret it.
Before I start, I acknowledge the ham-fisted leftist politics of the film upon which theh film is based.
I am not a sci-fi/fantasy fan (save LOTR) but 45 minutes of this 3D film, I may be a convert. The story is a simplistic good v evil/unsuitable-boy-meets-girl epic but the sfx are incredible not only for their beauty and believability but the amazing creative lateral thinking of Cameron (come on, did you imagine connecting rider with mount in that way?)
Cameron does an incredible job creating a whole world (think Middle Earth), complete with warring/friendly tribes, flora and fauna, language, history and culture.
Although Avatar probably won't fire the synapses of its audiences, it will change what viewers expect. A new standard has been set.
The acting was as expected given that the characters aren't particulaly complex but Sam Worthington was a convincing ex-Marine.
You have seen nothing EVER to compare with this film.
This is how I scored this so called 'epic' movie which in fact turned out to be so poorly acted and scripted that it only showed once again that today's awards for films are a farce.
Special effects 10
I gave it one star for the special effects.
Not even worth watching if it was free!
'Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the ... public,' said Mencken. Mencken's right and James Cameron is a very rich man.
Avatar is visually stunning and is worth seeing for that. However, the screenplay is cliche-ridden, trite and derivative - Lord of the Rings Meets Star Wars, with references to Robocop and some early computer war games. The ecological message is delivered with the subtlety of one of the war machines of the baddies.
Beautifully delivered rubbish.
The best movie, i have ever seen.......
There is no comparison.....
It's simply the BEST!!!
Yes, I loved this too. First 3D film I've seen and really worth the cost of the glasses! I usually don't much like "block busters" but the characters in Avatar are very well drawn, so that along with the "special" special effects, the film was very satisfying and I was stunned to realise at the end that it had been two and a half hours long.
This movie is amazing. I cant find one word in the universe to describe the feelings, the acting and how great it was . wow.
Amazing, jaw-dropping adventure. All the sci-fi novels I ever read came alive. I really couldn't believe it was CGI even tho my mind told it had to be. Go see it on the big screen now.
One of the best movies of 2009 and last decade.
Perfect to end the year.
Typical Hollywood movie. Great visuals and sound, great premise but the usual cliched ending. The only thing this was missing was a " Presidents motivating speech" and a "10-1 countdown clock finish", otherwise all predictable.
I saw this on the big screen and it was great. Loads of CGI and the final battle was fantastic. Almost 3hrs long but it didn't feel like it.
Saw this at IMAX 3D in Perth and WOW! Mindblowing stuff. Acting, emotion, action, epic scope, CGI - all awesome.
Best movie ever and must be seen in 3D at least once!
