Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than ten years in the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature directing since helming 1997's Titanic, winner of eleven Oscars® including Best Picture and, until Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time. WETA Digital, renowned for its work in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong, will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.

James Cameron’s Avatar may not change your life, but it will likely make your day. The director’s long-gestating opus has finally arrived, nearly crushed by overwhelming hype, nay-saying critics and a price tag the equivalent of a small nation’s GDP. Considering that his film is not a disaster is astounding enough bearing in mind the uphill battle Cameron has fought these past few years trying to get it to the big screen. I am happy to say that you may now raise your lowered expectations and submit yourself to the visceral onslaught that is Avatar, one of the most gripping action films of the year.

The year is 2154. The ecological environment of Earth has been crippled by humanity. Paraplegic marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is given the opportunity of a lifetime when he is invited to join the Avatar Program on Pandora; a distant planet with an environment inhospitable to humans. You see, the shareholders of Earth (some subtle political commentary from the always restrained Jim Cameron) want to mine the rich and gorgeous planet for a powerful element called ... get this ... unobtainium (another delicate Cameron touch). Sadly, the indigenous population of Pandora, known as the Na’vi, get kind of irritable when their home planet is ransacked by humans.

Enter Professor Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and her Avatar Program. Participants learn the native language and are given their very own Na’vi body to operate, so that they might connect with the locals. Jake signs on, at first simply to have a new body with working legs. He is given a mission separate from Augustine’s peace-keeping intentions: gain the trust of the Na’vi tribe and relay information back to Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and money-hungry corporate jerk Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi), to aid the humans in a future invasion of Pandora. However, Na’vi Jake strays from his mission when he meets (and subsequently falls for) the lovely Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and her proud people.

OK, so the story is nothing special. It’s (as the critics feared) Fern Gully meets Dances With Wolves. And frankly, the dialogue is clunky. But there is a ferociousness in the storytelling that is unique to Avatar; it sets it apart from your typical eco-drama. When the film concludes with an eye-popping battle sequence, that ferociousness is only amplified. You can feel Cameron’s anger and his passion every time a Na’vi roars. The most exhilarating moments are those when you can feel the director urging his actors to let go completely, to become furious, and to unleash hell.

This brings us to Cameron's greatest achievement: his use of motion capture. I’ve long been a critic of this filmmaking tool. I only recently blamed the failure of A Christmas Carol on Robert Zemeckis’ insistence on employing this mo-cap technology. I stand by that comment. However, in the same way that mo-cap stole the soul from A Christmas Carol, it is mo-cap that aids in the baring of Avatar’s heart. Cameron understands this technology better than anyone and when he uses it to take us into the world of the Na’vi, the film truly comes alive. The performances of Worthington and Saldana as the Na’vi are surprisingly subtle. Sure, their characters are often at the center of the action, but these actors recognise the importance of every one of their movements. Their performances, assisted by this mind-blowing technology, are the best part of the whole shebang.

As is consistent with ridiculously expensive blockbusters, there are elements of the film that come up short when compared to the jaw-dropping special effects – and do not be mistaken, the special effects, particularly in the depiction of Pandora, are absolutely breathtaking. Proceedings get off to a shaky start with Sully bombarding the audience with information through narration in the opening minutes. His motivation for joining the Avatar program is never made apparent, and the film’s true villain (Selfridge) isn’t quite as ominous as I would have appreciated. The narrative is also a little bloated (like another Cameron film). These are just some of the reasons Avatar is not a perfect movie. But it was never going to be. However, its technological achievements are tremendous, and it is certainly one of the most enjoyable sci-fi action films of late. Most excitingly, it welcomes cinema's best action director back into the public consciousness. Although, I guess he never really went away. He’s just been busy with this little film called Avatar.

4/5

I missed this at the cinemas at the time - so this was a first viewing. Yes - Dances with Wolves meets Bambi. Yes cliched, with a somewhat predictable story line. But it had enough originality to be very watchable. I really liked the use of known/plausible science under-pinning some of the story: years of flight to our closest interstellar neighbour, "plausible" space-craft design, Cyro-sleep, unobtainium needed for lighter super-conductivity to handle the massive electromagnets of the matter - anti-matter engines. Most of these details aren't explained in the film, but give a foundation must better than a lot of other fictional fluff with warp drives, easy inter-spicies interaction and down-right junk science. In the end the science was thrown away in favor of killing the nasty, greedy humans and joining a group-hug around our neural-networked trees. But hey - we all had fun on the journey.

Beautifully made movie, looked beautiful on IMAXX. Looses something on the TV but still very watchable. Would be nice if the story was a little less stereotyped in places but still a great movie. Really loved all the forest critters they came up with.

Dances With Wolves meets Star Wars - i'm one of those party poopers that doesn't join the "we love avatar" bandwagon. It's still very watchable with brilliant special effects but the storyline is completely unoriginal and recycled.

Overpriced cartoon if you asked me...... however somehow it did grab me.. to the point that Ive seen it 3 times now. The more you see it the more you love it I guess... but I still cant get over the fact that more than 80% is animated.. which is a big negative or me,.. Its sort of the smurfs on steroids I guess...

Pulls all the right strings to draw you in and make you sympathise with the core of the plot and characters, but then un-insightfully and awkwardly moves them to the background to push the implications of a pseudo-intellectual premise that under-delivers. Patronisingly simple-minded and heavy-handed themes sucked all the enjoyment out of this for me. Also too many recycled images, characters, and moments for a film aiming to wow with wide-eyed imaginative immersion. Hubristic - In five years the serious-ness with which it takes its now outdated CG content and the clumsy environmentalist message will make this film a laughing stock.

It's certainly not one of the greatest movies of all time as many said upon its initial release, but James Cameron's sci-fi epic certainly draws you and holds you for the 150 minute runtime with great ease through a rehashing of already known stories and an appropriate and excellent use of CGI.

Very wierd film. Visually it is pretty spectacular at times, but some of the dialogue is so cliche that a film 10 years in the making should be so much more. Sigourney Weaver - "where are my effen cigarettes. What's wrong with this picture people?" Is it just me or do her characters repeat? And the blue people chanting and swaying under the magical lights tree felt really corny and bizarre. Sprituality and sci-fi just don't partner well.

Like James Cameron's Titanic, this - his latest film - is big and entertaining. I didn't like Titanic as it had too many one dimensional characters, but I found the time went quickly as I watched which is a good sign that at least it was entertaining. Avatar is much the same - it uses every military cliche in the book, the baddies and one-dimensionally bad and the goodies are equally shallow. But the time watching it goes quickly so it does the job... It was nice too see a film where the goodies are the indigenous population, although I'm sure some people will want to label the film and dismiss it as left-wing for that reason. I enjoyed it but, like Titanic, it could have been so much more.

Far, far better than I expected, despite the rather ridiculous story line. I didn't see it on the big screen because I didn't think I'd like it. Excellent effects, it would be amazing in 3D. I enjoyed this film once it got going, (it's a bit slow to start with), and very much enjoyed seeing America NOT save the world for once. A great example of modern imperial/colonial activity, this sort of stuff did not end with the death of Truggernana after all. Even in Science Fiction it seems that some things are sad but true.

Saw this in 3D IMAX when it was first out and really enjoyed it, got taken in by the visuals and creativity of James Cameron. Now that I have seen the DVD as well, I would still recommend this movie highly, but if you can see it in 3D and on a big screen, then that's a must. I found it lost a lot in the transition to small screen and looked a lot more cartoon-ish. The story is still terrible and predictable and cliched, but it's still a terrific flick.

I've heard so much about this show and finally managed to watch it (unfortunately not 3D or Blu-Ray). I really enjoyed this movie. I had all the elements I like, it had romance, fantasy, sci-fi, action and as usual we have the good vs the bad guys, with predictably, the good guys winning (of course). I would watch the movie again on Blu-Ray and/or 3D and see the technical brilliance that people are raving about but even without all that, I story as it is can stand on its own.

Probably this would have been better in 3D in the theatre than on my not 3D TV. I'm sure it was a spectacle and there is still some wow-ness that comes through on the small screen. However, after a promising start, this descended into Battle of the Ewoks for the 21st century. Still, Cameron knows how to spend money for maximum audience manipulation and the heart of the story (though cliche-ed) is in the right place.

I'm not really a fan of the sci-fi movies and ones that rely on a lot of CGI. I'd heard a lot about this movie and wanted to see what the fuss was about. For the first 20 minutes or so, I was wondering what the point of the movie was. Then the love story started happening and that was nice and probably the only thing that kept me watching the movie. I think if you can get past your dislike for scf-fi and CGI (which I have to admit was well done) and just focus on the love story and people who stand up for their beliefs and for others, its not bad. I wouldn't say the acting of the humans in this movie was spectacular or worthy of any awards, but it was interesting to see Sigourney Weaver in another Alien-esuqe movie.

One of the best sci fi movies I have ever seen. On a par with Alien. The background message of an aggressive corporation focused ion shareholder profit and their disregard for the environment and different cultures formed teh framework for the plot. Enjoyed the love story too. The filom was so good that I quickly forgot that the two main characters were blue.

I enjoyed Avatar very much, I don't know if the storey that was in it was ment, but you could see that it told of what the human race is really like. If the people of power wont something the they wont stop untill they get it, you see it all over the todays work. But in all it was a very good movie, the special affects was great, in all I found no fults in the moie so I give it a five.

I read the last 20 or so reviews and this movie polarised the viewers: you either hated it or loved it. I am one of the last! The msg has been repeated over many movies, but still those that hated the movie obviously didn't listen nor 'see it'. Acting was well done, and very believable (the baddie was a bit 'clichéd' bad, only the black hat was missing), but the main actor and his mission and change of heart..... In real life this has happened very often. The graphics.... well 11 out of 10 especially in 3D! On my 46" screen it looked excellent in the cinema it looked frighteningly realistic! A must see and asap I will get a 3D set up, so I can see this movie again in 3D!

P.S. I'll bet the kids that were old enough to see it enjoyed it.

Yes - the story itself barely lifts above cliche, but what a wonderfully imagined world. I was sceptical but in the end just let myself go with it and really enjoyed it. It's always a bit of a shame to see movie after movie degenerate into the sort of gun fights and military might that America seems to love but overall it was worthwhile and full of wonderful imaginative touches - and, of course, the good guys won despite the oppressive might and muscle of the enemy!

Sure - done with a lot of effort and James Cameron is a great director. However to enjoy this movie you must be a SciFi fan - I'm not. It has a bit a green message but I prefer a docu such as 'The Cove' to be reminded that we should change our behaviour to preserve the planet for future generations.3 stars for the effort and for the director :-)

I wish, wish, wish, wish I'd seen this at the cinemas in 3D. Like very few other people, I fobbed it off, thinking it was all a load of hype and that I'd just rent it on DVD and think it was so-so, but the imagery was spectacular. Luckily, I watched it on a 42" HD LCD, so I got a good effect, but as I watched the movie I could 'see' what would have been jumping off the screen at me. While the look of the movie was brilliant, unfortunately the story was cliche and unoriginal. We all recognise this story as a deadringer for Pocahontas, but you know, that still didn't deter me. Yes, it's an old, obvious story, but it was done in such a spectacle that you can look past it, and you know what? I can watch Pocahontas over and over again and still love it, so I think I'll be doing the same with this one. I found myself yelling at the screen, in awe of the scenery and falling in love with the characters. Sam Worthington was very, very good in this role. Glad I finally saw it, brilliantly done.

I was so impessed I watched it 3 times. Each time it got better and I understood more of the story. After reading some of the other reviews from disgruntled viewers I am amazed at how some people have become so hard to please. Here we have in this movie the very latest in cgi effects yet they didn't like it! What does it take to please some people? Then there are those who thought the story was corny. It is true there are probably no really new stories, just rehashes of old ones, but the writers wove a tale that was topical and relevent given our modern way of thinking that 'greed is good' and we should exploit every natural resource regardless of the cost. The love element was well done although perhaps a forgone conclusion. The connection to the spiritual side of their lives was something that we could all do well to think about. Our own spiritual well being seems to be something many people are oblivious to or simply refuse to acknowledge, a case of what you can't see doesn't exist. I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars for imagination, scenery, charactors and story line, it's a masterpiece.

I was totally blown away by this movie.. Sure the story line is a rehash from many other epic movies but it was really well put together with the most amazing CGI ever to hit the screens. But the core of the story being about the humans ignorance of the connectedness of nature and the blind consumerist mentality, no respect for that which is not understood, and willingness to destroy anything that gets in the way of plundering, was what really hit home for me.

What a fuss about nothing. This is essentially an animated cartoon. Much preferred the "real actor" parts of this movie. Profoundly disappointing. James Cameron spent 10 years on this? I'd rather watch Titanic (and listen to the theme song) over and over than sit through this again.

LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Original story with drama, fun, morality, tears and romance! The attention to detail within the story and within the world of Pandora and it's people made you feel a connection with them. I was so pro-Na'vi by the end of the film I wanted to jump out of my seat to help protect them and their home! Incredibly amazing effects and could see it over and over again.

I missed a lot of the hype leading up to this film, so had no real idea what it was about, but all the good reviews convined me to go see it anyway, and I'm glad I did. Perhaps the acting isn't the best, and people have complained about the lack of depth to the characters, but to me this movie wasn't entirely about the central characters, rather it was about all the people of Pandora, and the accepted truth of what would happen if the human race ever found a way to travel to amongst the stars. Cameron's concepts of a world where every creature has it's importance, and all can communicate through a special bond was inspiring. The creatures were so real, and the actors interaction with these cgi creations was so flawless, you could almost believe they really existed ! I've read the reviews of some members who complain of the cliches, but what these people fail to realise is the human race is so slow to learn from it's biggest mistakes, unless people like Cameron continue to highlight our shortcomings, we will never learn to do better. So I found the movie exciting, entertaining, awe inspiring (for the creation of the world and it's amazing creatures), as well as a little educational. I definately recommend you see it at least once on the big screen, you won't regret it.

This will be a movie you will never forget. One that must be seen at the cinemas to truly capture it's scope and magnificence. The story itself has many deeper meanings, and so many concepts like connection with nature and all living things were put forth, but not only that, you ended up feeling this connection through the Na'Vi and their pain eventually becomes your pain. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how good this movie is: from the visuals, acting, script, editing and the emotional drive behind all aspects of the story, there are no letdowns. Just do yourself a favour... go and see it at the cinemas. You won't regret it.

Before I start, I acknowledge the ham-fisted leftist politics of the film upon which theh film is based. I am not a sci-fi/fantasy fan (save LOTR) but 45 minutes of this 3D film, I may be a convert. The story is a simplistic good v evil/unsuitable-boy-meets-girl epic but the sfx are incredible not only for their beauty and believability but the amazing creative lateral thinking of Cameron (come on, did you imagine connecting rider with mount in that way?) Cameron does an incredible job creating a whole world (think Middle Earth), complete with warring/friendly tribes, flora and fauna, language, history and culture. Although Avatar probably won't fire the synapses of its audiences, it will change what viewers expect. A new standard has been set. The acting was as expected given that the characters aren't particulaly complex but Sam Worthington was a convincing ex-Marine. You have seen nothing EVER to compare with this film.

This is how I scored this so called 'epic' movie which in fact turned out to be so poorly acted and scripted that it only showed once again that today's awards for films are a farce. 'Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the ... public,' said Mencken. Mencken's right and James Cameron is a very rich man. Avatar is visually stunning and is worth seeing for that. However, the screenplay is cliche-ridden, trite and derivative - Lord of the Rings Meets Star Wars, with references to Robocop and some early computer war games. The ecological message is delivered with the subtlety of one of the war machines of the baddies. Beautifully delivered rubbish.
