Boring, I can see why the film industry loved this piece of navel gazing. I love film but this was too self conscious to be enjoyable.
Well made film but why rehash the old Hollywood movies that are insufferably lame? The genteel poverty of Valentin an insult to those who lived through the depression. Romance absurd - a male wish fulfilment.
I don't care what other reviewers say, I thought this movie was great. It took about 30mins to get into it but it sucked me in. It is a lovely 'tip of the hat' to silent film and makes it accessible to those who don't watch this genre regularly. I loved it!
Is it audacious or not? A silent black and white film starring two unknown French stars that took home the best picture Oscar and a few others. Is this a result of the Weinstein Bros. marketing genius? Probably, but it isn't a bad film, just a safe film. Lovingly recreating all of the cliches of silent film lore in real Hollywood locations, the Artist has a feel good story arc and some ingratiating performances (yes, including from the dog). However, it lacks the depth of the best silent cinema (Murnau's Sunrise etc.).
One word – disappointing. Silent B&W film by a French director. Shouldn't have won the Oscar.... Touted as 'art' or something fresh but its just a gimmick; A silent film tribute with a slightly irritating score.
An unusual film with great acting especially the little dog. Not sure how it won the Oscar 6/10
Must be the most over-rated film of all time. How did it even get nominated for an Oscar - it's terrible. A hackneyed, cliched story told in a tedious, deeply contrived manner. I couldn't even finish it. Just woeful.
