Following their collaboration on the acclaimed Ghost World, filmmaker Terry Szwigoff and comic artist/screenwriter Daniel Clowes re-team for this offbeat satire on the pretensions of the art world. Art School Confidential follows talented young artist Jerome Platz (Max Minghella) as he escapes from high school to a tiny East Coast art school. Here the boyish freshman's ambition is to become the world's greatest artist, like his hero Picasso. Unfortunately, the beauty and craft of Jerome's portraiture are not appreciated in an anything-goes art class. Neither his harsh judgments of his classmates' efforts nor his later attempts to create pseudo-art of his own win him any admirers. But Jerome does attract the attentions of his dream girl, the stunning and sophisticated Audrey (Sophia Myles), an artist's model and daughter of a celebrated artist. Rejecting the affectations of the local art scene, Audrey is drawn to Jerome's sincerity. When Audrey shifts her attention to Jonah (Matt Keeslar), a hunky painter who becomes the school's latest art star, Jerome is heartbroken. Desperate, he concocts a risky plan to make a name for himself and win her back.

After adoring 'Ghost World' I was let down by Zwigoff's attempt with this film. It had some very funny and strong moments, but it was unclear what the film was trying to achieve in total. This is a mediocre affair, quite disappointing.

this is not your ordinary fartsy movie. it shows art in a different perspective and from many angles within that perspective. From a blossoming "wet behind the ears" artist who thinks the world is his oyster to all the "past it" artists this movies characters will really draw you in. you may even feel compelled to pick up a paintbrush yourself after watching this... (caution synopsis follows) murder mystery flic. *Gasp* [yes, not really all about art]

Good movie overall, but I thought the details about art school and art students are exaggerated/ blown out of proportions - or maybe that's just a movie technique that's always been used.

If you are stuck for movies - maybe watch this. Does depict the true BS of art and art school. However it is quite lame.

Interesting inside look to students choosing the arts as a career, particularly in the case of Jerome who appeared to be a normal lad trying to expand on his obvious artistic talent and how the influence of some totally radical people affected his outlook. Good role play by Max Minghella as Jerome, who thought he knew what he wanted out of life, which became screwed up with reality of the art world. John Malkovich was excellent as the tutor - love the tone of his voice. The end was very appropriate in terms of the art world - your work is more valuable when you capture the attention of the public either by death or misdemeanor!!
