Beneath the floorboards of a sprawling mansion set in a magical, overgrown garden in the suburbs of Tokyo, tiny 14-year-old Arrietty lives with her equally tiny parents. The house is occupied by two old ladies, who are absolutely unaware of the existence of their miniature tenants. Arrietty and her family live by borrowing. Everything they have, they borrow or make from the things they have borrowed. Essentials like gas, water and food. Tables, chairs, cooking utensils. And treats - a sugar cube here, a scrap of material there. But only a little each time, so the ladies do not notice.

A 12-year-old boy, Sho, moves into the mansion while he waits for urgent medical treatment in the city. Arrietty's parents have always warned her - 'never let the humans see you'. Once seen, little people always have to move on. But the adventurous Arrietty doesn't listen, and Sho discovers her. The two begin to confide in each other and, before long, a friendship begins to blossom.

A sweet kids movie. Didn't quite enjoy as much as similar movies Ponyo (4.5 stars) or Tatoro (4 stars). It was a little slow in parts. Kids lost concentration.

I look forward to each Studio Ghibli film as they come out. This one had me in absolute wonder from the start; the animation is stunning, the backdrops of the artwork paintings for the moving figures to be superimposed, the movement of the characters, and all the little intricicies (you could watch this film over and over and pick new things up), all add up to another masterpiece of excellence. What I love best are the little subtleties. I remember a part when Arrietty is startled by a sudden gust of wind, and it's really only a wind gust, but her reaction is so realistic. Ghibli films are so profound for this subtle intricacies. It's a totally charming story.

His masterpiece to date... the texture came alive on this film. A non-Hollywood ending which was great. A great statement about human nature and material consumption

A beautiful piece of work, far superior to the American movies. This is retelling of the old story The Borrowers. It is in English as well as Japanese, and just as appropriate for child audiences as the beautiful old books. Borrow it. Watch it. It is good.

While Dreamworks and Disney have sold out to the toy companies producing big budget spectacular displays devoid of substance, the Japanese industry has stayed true to its roots and showsn that animation is a medium for story telling. In this way they have produced magic.

Studio Ghibli has a great knack for telling a story which you genuinely love the characters, and doesn't follow the cliche hollywood staples you would expect the story to follow. You sometimes meet characters just for the characters sake. A beautifully told and beautifully illustrated story that the entire family can enjoy.

What a lovely film! My 7 and 4 year old daughters and I were captivated by this wonderful story, so beautifully animated and told in such a subtle, understated way. Best film I've been able to share with my kids in a long time. I've not seen any of the other Miyazaki films before but now I'm really keen to seek them out (thank you to the other reviewer for listing them!).

Not as good as other Ghibli in our view. The ones by the master Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Pom Poko, Tortoro, Nausica) just have something to them that is missing in Arrietty. Still good though.

If you haven't seen Studio Ghibili films before, get ready for treat that people of any age will love. This is not anime like Akira, the style it is more like animated paintings, lovingly drawn and never computer animated. Seek out all the films from this studio, they are at the peak of the animation genre, effortlessly blending music, storyline and imagination. May I also recommend YOU DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER as it gives far too much away. I also encourage you to view the original Japanese language version with subtitles to get the full experience. Enjoy!
