This movie sortof flatlined the whole way through. It had the promise of something special but didn't deliver.
It is probably one of the poorest movies I have ever watched . No story line , poor acting , extremely poor dialogue. If you want to waste a couple of hours of your time watch this excuse for a movie
A well made cowboy movie. great. a pleasant enough way to spend a bit of time
Yahoody, a great western that deserved more time at the movies....did it even appear? Dean Semler did the photography and Ed Hharris did just about everything else including singing some of the credits. The Ed and Viggo combo worked a treat with a surprise Jeremy Irons, a long way from Brideshead Revisited, as the baddie. What's not to like? Some say Rene, but she was pretty unobtrusive, which is just how I like her. A classic.
Rather stilted and somewhat baffling. Get rid of the "dorgorn" female
i found this very good worth while watching
its nice to watch a cowboy movie
Good solid Western, although the Renee Zellweeger character was irritating and lowered the whole tone of the movie. Worth a watch if you like Westerns, which I do.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz o was that a movie i fell asleep
Not the best western type show we have seen- also sound on tv had to be put up very high
Definiely not my sort of film. Couldn't go beyond the first minute!!
Beautifully shot by Australian Dean Semmler. The story is at heart a study of a friendship between two inarticulate, emotionally stunted men and the movie doesn't try to soften its criticism. The characters' limitations unfortunately limit the movie, which, otherwise is a 'standard' Western. Enjoyable if that's your thing.
One of the better Westerns out there. Great Characters and and interesting story line with a twist.
Good Western with a twist. Lovely photography especially the western close-up shots with the end credits! Ren?e Zellweger looked a bit strange with a puffy face but she was OK ..... well worth a look for any Western or High Noon fan!
it was painfully slow and quite boring, characters failed to engage so we didn't really care what's going to happen to them. there was time and era for western to shine but if someone tries to make one today, it better has a very strong action and character driven story behind it or nobody will care to watch.
A very solid western-not action packed, more a character study but very well done indeed.Ed Harris
Enjoyed this movie, even though it was slow at times, not a lot of action, the actors were good. Would not watch again.
hmmm, I am sure the book was better.. The movie was slow going, and sometimes bordering on boring.... I am guessing the director was trying to capture the atmosphere of a small town.... but yeah THAT is boirng.
Mostly two men speaking... a few shootings, lots of beautiful American scenery.
The actors prsented theri characters well, combined with the American scenery makes this movie wort watching.... just
Would have gotten three stars if the pacing was better. The film could have done well being trimmed by 20 minutes. It's an actors show with quality on all levels (Mortensen, Harris, Irons, Henriksen and the always special Ariadna Gil).
The one actor who really stands out in this film is Ariadna Gil, check out her body of work - Pan's Labyrinth, Alatriste, the Worst Years of Our Lives and Belle Epoque, hopefully she'll do more english movies.
This film also marks the return of Aussie Dean Semler to the western genre. He's the best.
I can't say that I hated this movie, but I wouldn't bother watching again. The cast was great, but a found the movie quite slow. It did get more interesting as the movie developed, but only barely.
Well thought out western. Brilliant acting. A tad slow but enough gun action and good storyline to get it through.
this film had good moments and some great acting but overall didnt connect. just missed the high points and was a dissapointment with such great talent behind it just sucked big time but i still love my western films.
If you want an action movie go elsewhere. If you want a quite well acted interesting story that, mostly, hangs together then give this one a go. Yes, maybe a bit slow but the characters have depth esp. Zellweger's character. Unlike other reviewers I don't see any gay undercurrent in this movie, it never even crossed my mind when watching it. One lame shootout that stretched credibility but overall I enjoyed it.
slow as, then ended suddenly. really like Ed and Viggo as actors, but they didn't add anything to the film.
great modern western very good story line
You'd think Viggo Mortensen western movie would equal awesome, but this was surprisingly slow and boring. Still, good cinematography and costumes.
This Western has it moments but lacks the sort of mythic quality that made Leone's classics so memorable. I particularly liked the approach to the gun fights which are over in seconds. Mortensen is convincing as usual but Harris less so. 3.5 stars
for the most part the acting was good, with the exception of Renee Zellweger who can't seem to make her face show any other emotion other than 'sucking on a lemon.'
Awful. Couldn't get past 45 minutes of this over-acted cliched story about not much
Really enjoyed this classic western movie, although I felt the female characters could have been fleshed out a little more. A more realistic portrayal of gunfighting made for a grittier offering as well - three stars from me.
old fashioned ( ina good way ) cowboy movie.
Not bad for a movie set in the old west, good actors aswell.
About time we had a decent western not driven by tired Hollywood formats. The characters were real, but not caricatures or unbelievable.
The plot is a good one - one that I can believe in, for a change. Some may say anti-climax, but I think that may be because a dose of realism tastes plain after sugar-coated Hollywood pap.
I loved the ending. The sacrifice made by a long-time friend and companion (the two are not the same) is a very poignant thing. The female role is excellent, but I don't have time to explain my view fully.
All in all a refreshing and extremely well made movie. A western, and characters, I can believe in for a change .
Why did they bother making this movie? Just plain pathetic!
I found it difficult to stay interested in the story, plus it was very easy to see where it was going so why bother watching.
I thought this was great - very like a good old western but a few modern quirks that would not have been in there if it had been made in the 50's. Yes - there is an element of predictability and certainly could be a gay sub-text but it is a well told story and follows the classic sort of line. Very watchable.
Westerns are a pretty rare beast these days, and good ones even more so. This was very watchable with quality leads in Ed Harris, Viggo Mortenson and Jeremy Irons (who seemed to be channeling Daniel Day Lewis) but I can give or take Renee Zellwegger these days. That whole pursed mouth thing always looks like she has a mouthful of sour gummy bears.
Tries hard, but cannot escape its own predictability any more than it can its flaming gay subtext.
