Despite the fact that there is lots of blood and cruelty in this film, I did like it. Colouful feast for one's eyes: costumes, make up (including body make ups/tattoos, skin scarifications, ear lobe alterations, nose piercings, etc.), jade, turquoise, etc.Filmed in the Mexican jungle. Lots of action (chasing and fighting). Spoken in Maya language, with English subtitles. Some extra features included. Highly recommended for most viewers!
(This film is also available in Blue ray format from Quick Flix!)
This is the worst movie I think I have ever watched, and I've watched some corkers. Senseless violence, very little plot and historically inaccurate. Can I give it less than one star?
I found this an interesting interpretation of the ancient Indian/Mayan culture but it was a very blood thirsty and gory movie and I had to close my eyes and turn away in many of the scenes where the violence was just too much. I would only recommend this to someone who has a very strong stomach and would never suggest any younger person should watch it.
I actually like this movie. A bit different because you have to read subtitles. Very sad and visually beautiful. I watched the behind the scenes footage and they really went out of their way to be as accurate as possible with the Mayan society.
I don't give 5 star reviews lightly, but I just had to with this film, although it did make me rather uncomfortable in places and I don't recommend it for everyone, certainly not the squeamish. Mel Gibson's a bit of a sadist and makes great horror films (Braveheart's and The Passion of the Christ's torture scenes come to mind). But by the end of this pulse-pounding, absolutely amazing-looking, breathless chase movie you will feel changed in some way. Remarkable. I hope Gibson gets back on form some day.
I would recommend this movie its edge of the seat viewing for adults.
FOUND THIS ONE TO BE a VERY GORY SELF INDULGENT BLOOD FEST!
WELL SHOT WITH A REALLY COMPELLING PACE...
This movie Apocalypto, what a major feat of logistics......cleverly filmed, exceelent locations and VERY REALISTIC. I give it 12 / 10 ...Way to go Mel Gibson, a true craftsman in movie making.
Another brilliant masterpiece from Mel Gibson. Very eye opening and blood thirsty, but if you can get past that, it is fantastic.
If you're looking for a nice relaxing movie then avoid this one. The action and drama don't stop and the violence is brutal and relentless, albeit a little unrealistic as no-one could survive what the central character suffers and still run at the speed he does. The sets and costumes were truly magnificent.
The film is unfair on the Mayan civilisation as it focuses on only a small part of their culture, but it doesn't really matter as it could have been any group of humans who descended into this level of depravity.
Interestingly enough the ritualised sacrifices were made to appease some god, and several characters said prayers to some other gods, but it didn't make any difference to what events unfolded. At the end of the movie the European invaders came to shore in boats displaying the Christian cross. The poor jungle people were just replacing one tyranny by another.
Too gruesome for me-only worth watching for the gorgeous Jaguar!
My sons liked it thoigh
Great work of fiction.Fast, furious and entertaining.
Made better by the fact that Mel Gibson didn't act in it.
I didn't like this one for numerous reasons.
it is such an amazing movie on Mayan civilization
This is one of the best movies I've EVER seen even though it's bloody its appropriate.
This movie kept me interested from start to finish. There were hard to watch seens, but it kept me on the edge of my seat. Very well done!!
A good movie worth watching
Whilst Mel is off the A list for his personal misdemeanours this movie is quite good. You have to be interested in the Incan (may have this wrong) history to appreciate the nuances. My boyfriend hated it. The violence will be offputting for some. A Braveheart for the South Americans. The behind the scenes extras are a treat.
The first half was beautiful, compelling and drew you into the characters....unfortunately the second half was like a sequel to Rambo. Way to stick with your formula Mel!
Interesting adventure movie but nothing original here.
Awesome. Looks amazing. Superb production, casting, cinematography. Brutally violent, graphic and unflinching. The storyline depicts the raw savagery and simplicity of a lost culture. It is gut-wrenching, emotive and adrenaline charged. If you are concerned about subtitles, don't be, you'll hardly notice them.
Fantastic movie by Mel Gibson, have not been disappointed yet with his Directoring cuts! If you have an interest in MAYAN culture, etc you'll like this one. Thoroughly enjoyable
Not too Bad, Pretty gory as movies go , but story line was good. Was busting at the seams for him to get back on time to save his family.
This was a really long movie. I was so tempted to just turn it off, but I really wanted to see how it ended.
This is the story about a tribe of Mayans living in the rainforest, who are brutally attacked by another tribe and then taken away to be murdered. One man survives and goes back to the camp site to rescue his pregnany wife. I'm surprised that he could run through the forest for so long when he was injured by a spear! The fight scenes are quite graphic, considering they are only using spears and other hand made implements, not guns or anything like what we have today. The first part of the movie can be quite humorous, but the rest is quite serious.
A good movie with a bit of everything, sad, blood and guts and action.
My favourite movie of all time!!! this is sick!!! Definatly watch it is an amazing movie, good job mel gibson, also the leading actor is hot.
Very disappointing. It should have been marked that it was spoken in a foriegn forgotten language and could only be understood in English if you wanted to read the sub script. It wasn't that interesting.Big Failure for Mel Gibson.
I wasn't expecting great things from this and was plesantly surprised. Spectacular cinematography and casting of non-actors allows you to be swept up in the story, regardless of the language issues.
Started this movie expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised in the end.
The scenery, natives, customs depicted and language were all great. I'd recommend this movie.
Very Good, I thought mabey there could have been some more ass kicking but i did enjoy it had me on the edge of my seat and you are missing a great movie if you dont see it!
I reluctantly decided to watch this movie, only after so many people had raved about it, but unfortunately I should have trusted my instincts. Talk about melodramatic! It was an unneccessarily violent soap opera! The writer and director only seemed to have one aim in mind and that was to pull on the heartstrings of the viewer and this unfortunately seemed to take precedence over creating a plausible and intelligent script.
I'll tell you what though, with the life and death situations the lead character got himself out of, if I were him I'd have gone and bought myself a junge lotto ticket!
great!!,great directing, great research to produce a great movie that takes you back to a beautiful, but savage land
It was watchable.. I suppose.. if you like extreme violence and reading subtitles throughout
Loved it. Mel Gibson is a far better director than actor, and the detail in this film is extraordinary. The costuming is by far the best I have ever seen in a film. Violent, not for kids, but necessary violence to convey tribal life in South America. Gripping and very enjoyable.
I enjoyed this. Bloodthirsty, highly believable (especially the city-scenes) and very watchable. I was out of breath by the end. NOT for the sqeamish or kiddies. A good ending and very appropo the title.
Totally inaccurate when it comes to Mayan history and to the arrival of the Spanish. The best way to view this is not as fact but as an allegory of modern day USA. The Durant quote at the beginning about the inward rotting of an Empire is the key, and the head of the slave traders looks amazingly like the standard Hollywood Marine Sergeant!
I didn't like how the story unfolded, I felt like it wasn't very well pieced together and seemed to go off in random tangents. It was overly gruesome, may be in an attempt to make up for the poor plot.
Grossly violent but then that, we're expected to accept, is how pre-columban life was for the peoples of central america. Other than that a fairly predictable chase movie formula set in the jungle.
I HATED IT! (Well the part I saw) It didn’t capture my interest in the first 15mins. Maybe if you watched more of it you might begin to like it but for me personally 15mins was enough. Natives run though the forest and stuff with subtitles is not my kind of movie.

Fantastic, brutal, gripping a story that reminds you of the horrific things that humans do to each other in the name of religion
Well shot and very authentic looking. Gee, Mel Gibson loves the blood and guts with this one following up other splatterfests such as Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ.
for some reason the start of the film didn't quite work for me - yet once it kicked into the sacrificial hooha - i was in.
There's quite a bit hidden in this one & some excellent ideas & history if you can see beyong the fight or flight theme & have read a few books etc
Well made, great atmosphere. I was surprised to find I loved it.
This is pretty much an exotic, epic, vaguely historic chase movie. But it's done so impressively that one can't help but wonder if Mel Gibson is leaving himself anywhere to go after this. If you can appreciate the intricate details of costumes and sets that lend to the tale of one man's struggle for himself and his family to survive, it should be no trouble getting lost in this movie. Further appreciation comes from watching the behind the scenes features, just to see the true efforts that Gibson has gone to with the making.
I normally hate watching movies that are not in English and hate viewing subtitles. This movie, however, was excellent, didn't mind at all that you had to read it to understand, excellent, kept me on the edge of my seat.
Over the top gore. Unanswered events, like how can he run faster than his hunters with 2 large puncture wounds and blood loss?
Mel Gibson seems obsessed with violence. Movies like Passion of the Christ seem to go into unnecessary gory detail. Likewise Apocalypto. Which is a real shame because it is undoubtedly a good movie but I found the violence so off putting that ended up turning it off after an hour.
Quite an enjoyable adventure movie. The hero is actually saved by a natural occurance. Then he has to brave a death run and gets help for a black panther(jaguar). ends with him & his family going of to live happily(?) ever after.
Loved the movie. Only down fall is you have to read the movie, so you have to watch it at least twice to really enjoy the whole experience.
Although the disc that was sent to me didnt work, my friend had a copy and i watched it with them
I never expected to like this film. I rented it out of curiousity with every intention to watch it in fast-forward. Instead, I was gripped from the opening scene and it only got better. What a fantastic film this is - the tension, spectacle and humour are beautifully balanced. The attention to detail is uncompromised, and the action moves from fascinating to unrelenting action. Highly recommended.
ok but a bit of "not going anywhere". glad i saved the money on the movie in cinema.
Not what I thought it would be by all the talk about it. Basic story. Good acting.
Basically a straightforward action movie with the good guy vs the very bad guys, just set in a different time period. All with the predictable ending for this type of film.
Mel picks and chooses from historical fact (but mostly fiction) to help the plot along but there's nothing revolutionary or new here.
It's also worth saying that the Mayans and their history are done a huge disservice here. I wasn't expecting a documentary but the Mayans are
totally misrepresented whilst passing it off as some kind of historical document of the fall of their civilisation.
Anyway, actors are good, locations are beautiful and the action scenes are well done even with Mel's sledgehammer direction at times
This is a good movie, but not worth the hype that surrounded it when it came to cinemas.
The story line is pretty basic, but the acting makes a pretty predictable movie watchable. I enjoyed the movie, it's pretty graphic at times. I've watched it once, but probably wouldn't watch it again if I had a choice.
This is a really good movie. It is bloodthirsty and cruel and makes you wonder how humans can be so cruel to each other. It is not for the faint hearted. Mel Gibson seems to be a great director.
sorry i didnt like it we turned it off after watching the first 5 min
Visually stunning. Awesome, raw and natural performances. I found I sat through this without ever once wanting to get up or even needing to. Great movie. Moved a lot faster than expected. I'd say better than Passion of the Christ.
This is a real blokes movie my husband enjoyed it, me not so much.
Although the story is cliched (eg. hero saved at crucial points by a lunar eclipse, a waterfall and 'white gods' etc), it nevertheless holds your interest due mainly to its fast pace, costuming and cinematography. Though quite violent
Gibson doesn't linger on the violence like he did in Braveheart (which I found tiresome).
Violent, but completely in context to the time the film was set. Heart stopping chase! Really enjoyed it.
Enjoyed the movie... Got gory at times...
Action thriller set in ancient times. Lacks emotional depthand suffers from a superficial handling of content. Visually engaging.
I enjoyed every second of this movie. It held me captive for the whole time. I cried, I laughed, I empathised, I cringed. It was just great and well directed.
The making of was the best part. The actual movie consisted of watching people running through the jungle!
Very blood thirsty movie, not to watch with those who have a week stomach. Good strong story about love, family and the will to live. Great for a guys 'boys' night in.
Had me at the edge of my seat every single moment! May be a tad too gruesome but still a must-see!
Awesome. Mel Gibson must have a thing for blue paint and violence, its a gut-wrenching ride full of action, suspense and heart break.
Only watched about 5 minutes of this, didn't like it at all.
The production design is superb, and the actors deliver their dialogue in subtitled Mayan, but despite all the anthropological drag, this is really just a crackerjack Saturday-afternoon serial with a final chase scene lasting a trifle too long.
Interesting study of the power struggles in a jungle community. Subtitled.
extreamly well made, realistic.
Usual over the top Mel Gibson production. Unnecessarily violent - one heart being torn out is enough. In some ways a remake of the old "Naked Prey" which had a more credible character not doing a marathon while bleeding nearly to death. None of the finer characteristics of Maya civilisation were shown and I can see why the descendents of that empire were upset with the film. However with all that a good action flick with more than the usual passing effort put it into an historical context.
A real surprise! We had no idea what to expect, so were a little breathless at the end. Simple plot, fast and punchy action. Very very good film making.
It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It was an interesting watch, although at times a little sickening, I had to watch it it to the end, but it wasn't my type of movie.
Beautifully but very graphically shot, I found this engaging but almost unbearable at times to watch. Highly recommend watching this although like me you may have to fast forward through the very graphic bits.
An interesting movie.....didn't quite flow in parts for me...some parts seemed quite drawn out whilst others I felt it needed to move a bit quicker....lead actor is excelent as is the woman who plays his pregnant wife.....subtitles movie, but that seems to go hand in hand with the movie and not detract from it......the subtitles were every expressively and well written....quite violent in parts....
Very brutal but we all loved it! A love story in disguise...
Attempted to represent some elements of Myan culture, which is generally poorly covered in the popular media despite being rather unique. Unfortunately, appeared stylised at times with glossy Hollywood-type hyperbole. Lots of graphic violence and suffering - a bit too much for my tastes with little added to the story line. Very simple story line. Don't watch this movie if you want to feel good or escape the stresses of everyday life.
This is one of the best movies I have seen. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.. very tense and very graphic. Fantastic!
A great movie by Mel, if not a tad gory for the nippers at some stages. Well acted and draws you into the story with the huge scenes outside of the forest. At first I thought meh... then couldn't stop watching.
We really liked the how fast paced the movie was and all the effort that went into the costumes.
Brilliant! Brutal and emotional. If you can get passed the initial violent scenes, then you can enjoy the journey of the main character. Much like his other movies, nothing is hidden to the viewer. The music was also brilliant.
I don't know how long this movie went for - but I was gripped from start to finish. I thought it would be just blood & gore - but it had a fantastic story-line - brilliant!
A very good movie that tries to get away from the normal run of the mill storylines. Interesting how Gibson incorporates some of the historal aspects into it. There are a few moments that seem a little contrived, but overall very good.
Awesome movie... The end was not as expected.
Beautifully filmed, fast paced and extremely brutal story.
Wonderfully told story. Quite graphic, but realistic. Great cinematogrophy, fantastic, one of my favourites.
Good story but a pain having to read the subtitles, overall not a bad movie.
Gratuitously violent. Pretentious. Over the top. Family values and decapitations. What's not to love?
Need a strong stomach to sit through it, predictable ending, nice chase scenes, Mel Gibson needs therapy.
just so realistic, excellent movie
yes another tale of man being wronged and man granted the opportunity to get back at wrong doers, but without a doubt this movie is so KICK ASS I actually cheered when one of the characters I truly loathed got his I actually felt releived,The whole movie was captivating from start to finish and I felt a sense of loss when it was over this movie had been severly under rated well done Mel, encore'
Anyone who has seen 'Passion of the Christ' and 'Braveheart', will know that Mel Gibson pulls no punches when he's in the Director's chair, and 'Apocalypto' is no exception. This brutal story of a brutal people, the Maya, is totally believable from opening scene to closing credits. You are instantly drawn in and totally unaware you are watching actors. None of the leading cast were known to me and I thought that Gibson was taking a page out of Werner Hertzog's book, and had casted 'unknown locals', as Hertzog did for both 'Fitzcarraldo' and 'Aguerre, Wrath of God' although both these movies had a well known actor, Klaus Kinsky, in the lead roles. But in Apocalypto, this appears not to be the case. All the cast are totally believable however, and the fact that the dialogue is subtitled (as it was for 'Passion') with the characters speaking what I assume is the language the Maya spoke, adds to the believability. The production design, costumes and makeup are flawless and obviously highly researched. When it would have been easier to use cgi for some of the locations, like the temple, Gibson chose instead to actually build them, and this was a masterstroke.
It's basically a 'chase' movie, but how the chase is resolved is totally unexpected, but works brilliantly.
While not being particualrly impressed with Gibson's 'off screen' antics, nor his opinions, you have to give him credit here for this tour de force. Not for the squeamish, but it IS a story about the Maya, after all. The Extras are also worth watching as they give a real insight into just how much effort went into the making of this amazing movie.
Excellent! Totally kept me on the edge of my seat, and heartbreaking...
It is an incredibly ambitious and an amazing visual feast about the fall of the Mayan empire, however I found it gratuitiously violent a little "Mad Max" in its approach, so that knocked some of the shine off it for me.
WOW!! Amazing story, totally believable and utterly compelling.
Gibson's directing and vision is bordering on genius.
Probably the best film I've seen this year. DO NOT MISS THIS.
Good story line, but lost some reality 2/3 the way through. Otherwise an entertaining movie.
Plenty of violence - too much running through the woods - long time to say little
this movie is bloody but so intense u wouldn't want to stop watching.
Its is a fascinating movie.
Mel Gibson pays incredible attention to detail in Apocolypto, as he has been known to do in other films he has directed e.g The passion of the Christ. His choice to have all actors speaking in the local native languages does give the film a sense of authenticity, which is fine if you don't mind subtitles. Personally I found the film both brilliant and brutal, so brutal I could only make it through the first hour before becoming too distressed to continue watching. I learned alot about the indigenous cultures of South America, and one day hope to go back and see the rest of this incredible film.
Excellent. I thought it was going to be a gore fest (Graphic in some parts) A good storyline to hold it together.
One for the boys or not too squeamish - very explicit and brutal but great story and sets/costumes.
Excellent, great hunt chase but a cop-out ending.
I was very disappointed. I hoped for a film that would entertain but also teach something about the Maya civilisation. Instead it was an excuse to show terrible violence by strange people, without any explanation about why it was taking place. A waste of what could have been an interesting theme.
Good idea pulled down by heavy-handed treatment. Jungle chase scenes exciting but Mayan gore was overdone.
Quite slow to start but it is well worth perservering. It was a real eye-opener and a very human story.
Fantastic - amazing scenery, story maintained interest throughout, a little violent perhaps, but certainly not enough to cause anyone to miss out on seeing this fab film.
Great production and story. Poignant scenes of family life and horrifying scenes of sacrifice and gore are both gripping. The ending is stunningly simple and totally effective.
Really marvellous movie, which kept me enthralled from beginning to end. The casting of the actors was outstanding and the attention to detail of the costumes was superb, showing just how much research Mel does for all his movies. What an amazing jungle setting it was with a beautiful waterfall and a rapidly flowing river. Amazing to know some of the actors were Americans, they fitted so very well in to their Indian roles.
Great epic. Had me in hook, line and sinker. Did not notice subtitles. Just loved it.
a movie to be enjoyed, very gripping
Mal Gibson is a very good director.
thoughly enjoyed it. top movie, good acting lovely scenery. Very well written and good storylines.
Although this movie has subtitles, I found it very enjoyable.
This movie is very brilliantly crafted. Despite the fact it is in subtitles, you are emmersed in the story line as it progresses to it's end. Visual effects were awesome with a 'gutsy' storyline.
Mel Gibson epic movie with 700 extras, 200 makeup artists, filmed in Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. It makes you feel like you are there, experiencing life as a Mayan in 1502, and holds your attention from beginning to end. The primitive people believed that the gods must be worshipped and offered human sacrifices when they are angry. Well worth the 2hrs 18mins.
Great story and fantastic cinema photography.
No wonder Mel Gibson drinks!! His penchant for blood, guts and subtitles is obviously taking its toll. Having said that, this was a really good movie with excellent acting by a cast of unknowns and the costumes were unreal. Bloodthirsty to the max but in context with the theme. As usual Mel uses artistic licence and a vivid imagination to depict a time in history where you could only hazard a guess as to how things really were. Well worth watching.
very believable storyline.. beautifully shot. Feel as if you are there...
This was FANTASTIC! Very graphic but it was such a beautiful picture. I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
Story line didnt really go anywhere. This movie didnt grasp me very much
What a pity Mel had such bad press just as this film was being released, I was expecting something a little bizarre and now I'm sorry it took me so long to see it. Brilliant!
This is a beautifully photographed epic. The costumes are amazing as is the art direction. The characters are real and the subtitles don't get in the way at all. It is graphically violent in keeping with the Mayan culture.
An often bloodthirsty saga of the fall of the Mayan empire. Not for the squeemish.
Very real , just enough gore,,,,,,,,,,
This movie had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The cast were flawless giving a much believed account of how they lived. The story was action filled mixing well with the emotion of the story. Great movie, loved it.
A little violent but worth watching.
Visually stunning, a little overboard on the gore at times but this can be excused for a great adventure love story.
So much for allegations that white man "enslaved" these natives. They were already slaves in their own societies. This film surely convinces us that white man was justified in ending the cruel and barbaric practises of these ancient civilizations.
Great Flick I asked a friend did he mind the sub totals he said "oh yeh ...i forgot ...there were sub titles"
Fantastic movie, not one that I would normally borrow, but I loved it!
WOW - a tour de force! From Mad Max!
This movie is completely subtitled, this gives it a realistic and good effect if you don't mind reading
Loved it. Thought that the subtitles would ruin it but they didnt, excellent.
Huge production, brilliant movie, paced, exciting, from the first scene you are transported into the deep jungles of Mexico and the Mayans. A must see
Loved this movie. Not normally fond of excessive violence but it was within context of time depicted - and no swearing! Scenery, costumes, music and acting all fabulous. Am going to buy DVD to add to my collection of absolute favourites. Not many films I watch more than once but this is definitely worth watching again.
Despite initial reservations about having to watch a movie with subtiltles this turned out to be an exceptional film. Gibson sure knows how to tell a story and tell it well. The abundance of action and gore may put some off, but I thought it was a necessary part of the story and heartily recommend the DVD to all.
OK but disappointing, I expected a far more different/better type of film from the trailers.
Why the hype?, it just a native being chased through the bush by other badder natives?.
This is the Best Movie I've seen in years. I was enthralled. Loved the story, the scenery, the color, the fact that you forgot you were watching actors... This is an amazing movie! 5 paws without a doubt
