This is the worst movie I think I have ever watched, and I've watched some corkers. Senseless violence, very little plot and historically inaccurate. Can I give it less than one star?

I found this an interesting interpretation of the ancient Indian/Mayan culture but it was a very blood thirsty and gory movie and I had to close my eyes and turn away in many of the scenes where the violence was just too much. I would only recommend this to someone who has a very strong stomach and would never suggest any younger person should watch it.

I actually like this movie. A bit different because you have to read subtitles. Very sad and visually beautiful. I watched the behind the scenes footage and they really went out of their way to be as accurate as possible with the Mayan society.

I don't give 5 star reviews lightly, but I just had to with this film, although it did make me rather uncomfortable in places and I don't recommend it for everyone, certainly not the squeamish. Mel Gibson's a bit of a sadist and makes great horror films (Braveheart's and The Passion of the Christ's torture scenes come to mind). But by the end of this pulse-pounding, absolutely amazing-looking, breathless chase movie you will feel changed in some way. Remarkable. I hope Gibson gets back on form some day.

If you're looking for a nice relaxing movie then avoid this one. The action and drama don't stop and the violence is brutal and relentless, albeit a little unrealistic as no-one could survive what the central character suffers and still run at the speed he does. The sets and costumes were truly magnificent.

The film is unfair on the Mayan civilisation as it focuses on only a small part of their culture, but it doesn't really matter as it could have been any group of humans who descended into this level of depravity.

Interestingly enough the ritualised sacrifices were made to appease some god, and several characters said prayers to some other gods, but it didn't make any difference to what events unfolded. At the end of the movie the European invaders came to shore in boats displaying the Christian cross. The poor jungle people were just replacing one tyranny by another.

Whilst Mel is off the A list for his personal misdemeanours this movie is quite good. You have to be interested in the Incan (may have this wrong) history to appreciate the nuances. My boyfriend hated it. The violence will be offputting for some. A Braveheart for the South Americans. The behind the scenes extras are a treat.

Awesome. Looks amazing. Superb production, casting, cinematography. Brutally violent, graphic and unflinching. The storyline depicts the raw savagery and simplicity of a lost culture. It is gut-wrenching, emotive and adrenaline charged. If you are concerned about subtitles, don't be, you'll hardly notice them.

This was a really long movie. I was so tempted to just turn it off, but I really wanted to see how it ended. This is the story about a tribe of Mayans living in the rainforest, who are brutally attacked by another tribe and then taken away to be murdered. One man survives and goes back to the camp site to rescue his pregnany wife. I'm surprised that he could run through the forest for so long when he was injured by a spear! The fight scenes are quite graphic, considering they are only using spears and other hand made implements, not guns or anything like what we have today. The first part of the movie can be quite humorous, but the rest is quite serious.

I reluctantly decided to watch this movie, only after so many people had raved about it, but unfortunately I should have trusted my instincts. Talk about melodramatic! It was an unneccessarily violent soap opera! The writer and director only seemed to have one aim in mind and that was to pull on the heartstrings of the viewer and this unfortunately seemed to take precedence over creating a plausible and intelligent script. I'll tell you what though, with the life and death situations the lead character got himself out of, if I were him I'd have gone and bought myself a junge lotto ticket!

Totally inaccurate when it comes to Mayan history and to the arrival of the Spanish. The best way to view this is not as fact but as an allegory of modern day USA. The Durant quote at the beginning about the inward rotting of an Empire is the key, and the head of the slave traders looks amazingly like the standard Hollywood Marine Sergeant!

This is pretty much an exotic, epic, vaguely historic chase movie. But it's done so impressively that one can't help but wonder if Mel Gibson is leaving himself anywhere to go after this. If you can appreciate the intricate details of costumes and sets that lend to the tale of one man's struggle for himself and his family to survive, it should be no trouble getting lost in this movie. Further appreciation comes from watching the behind the scenes features, just to see the true efforts that Gibson has gone to with the making.

I never expected to like this film. I rented it out of curiousity with every intention to watch it in fast-forward. Instead, I was gripped from the opening scene and it only got better. What a fantastic film this is - the tension, spectacle and humour are beautifully balanced. The attention to detail is uncompromised, and the action moves from fascinating to unrelenting action. Basically a straightforward action movie with the good guy vs the very bad guys, just set in a different time period. All with the predictable ending for this type of film. Mel picks and chooses from historical fact (but mostly fiction) to help the plot along but there's nothing revolutionary or new here. It's also worth saying that the Mayans and their history are done a huge disservice here. I wasn't expecting a documentary but the Mayans are totally misrepresented whilst passing it off as some kind of historical document of the fall of their civilisation. Anyway, actors are good, locations are beautiful and the action scenes are well done even with Mel's sledgehammer direction at times

Although the story is cliched (eg. hero saved at crucial points by a lunar eclipse, a waterfall and 'white gods' etc), it nevertheless holds your interest due mainly to its fast pace, costuming and cinematography. Though quite violent Gibson doesn't linger on the violence like he did in Braveheart (which I found tiresome).

Usual over the top Mel Gibson production. Unnecessarily violent - one heart being torn out is enough. In some ways a remake of the old "Naked Prey" which had a more credible character not doing a marathon while bleeding nearly to death. None of the finer characteristics of Maya civilisation were shown and I can see why the descendents of that empire were upset with the film. However with all that a good action flick with more than the usual passing effort put it into an historical context.

Attempted to represent some elements of Myan culture, which is generally poorly covered in the popular media despite being rather unique. Unfortunately, appeared stylised at times with glossy Hollywood-type hyperbole. Lots of graphic violence and suffering - a bit too much for my tastes with little added to the story line. Very simple story line. Don't watch this movie if you want to feel good or escape the stresses of everyday life.

Anyone who has seen 'Passion of the Christ' and 'Braveheart', will know that Mel Gibson pulls no punches when he's in the Director's chair, and 'Apocalypto' is no exception. This brutal story of a brutal people, the Maya, is totally believable from opening scene to closing credits. You are instantly drawn in and totally unaware you are watching actors. None of the leading cast were known to me and I thought that Gibson was taking a page out of Werner Hertzog's book, and had casted 'unknown locals', as Hertzog did for both 'Fitzcarraldo' and 'Aguerre, Wrath of God' although both these movies had a well known actor, Klaus Kinsky, in the lead roles. But in Apocalypto, this appears not to be the case. All the cast are totally believable however, and the fact that the dialogue is subtitled (as it was for 'Passion') with the characters speaking what I assume is the language the Maya spoke, adds to the believability. The production design, costumes and makeup are flawless and obviously highly researched. When it would have been easier to use cgi for some of the locations, like the temple, Gibson chose instead to actually build them, and this was a masterstroke. It's basically a 'chase' movie, but how the chase is resolved is totally unexpected, but works brilliantly. While not being particualrly impressed with Gibson's 'off screen' antics, nor his opinions, you have to give him credit here for this tour de force. Not for the squeamish, but it IS a story about the Maya, after all. The Extras are also worth watching as they give a real insight into just how much effort went into the making of this amazing movie.

Mel Gibson pays incredible attention to detail in Apocolypto, as he has been known to do in other films he has directed e.g The passion of the Christ. His choice to have all actors speaking in the local native languages does give the film a sense of authenticity, which is fine if you don't mind subtitles. Personally I found the film both brilliant and brutal, so brutal I could only make it through the first hour before becoming too distressed to continue watching. I learned alot about the indigenous cultures of South America, and one day hope to go back and see the rest of this incredible film.

Excellent. I thought it was going to be a gore fest (Graphic in some parts) A good storyline to hold it together.

I was very disappointed. I hoped for a film that would entertain but also teach something about the Maya civilisation. Instead it was an excuse to show terrible violence by strange people, without any explanation about why it was taking place. A waste of what could have been an interesting theme.

Good idea pulled down by heavy-handed treatment. Jungle chase scenes exciting but Mayan gore was overdone.

Great production and story. Poignant scenes of family life and horrifying scenes of sacrifice and gore are both gripping. The ending is stunningly simple and totally effective.

Really marvellous movie, which kept me enthralled from beginning to end. The casting of the actors was outstanding and the attention to detail of the costumes was superb, showing just how much research Mel does for all his movies. What an amazing jungle setting it was with a beautiful waterfall and a rapidly flowing river. Amazing to know some of the actors were Americans, they fitted so very well in to their Indian roles.

This movie is very brilliantly crafted. Despite the fact it is in subtitles, you are emmersed in the story line as it progresses to it's end. Visual effects were awesome with a 'gutsy' storyline.

Mel Gibson epic movie with 700 extras, 200 makeup artists, filmed in Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. It makes you feel like you are there, experiencing life as a Mayan in 1502, and holds your attention from beginning to end. The primitive people believed that the gods must be worshipped and offered human sacrifices when they are angry. Well worth the 2hrs 18mins.

No wonder Mel Gibson drinks!! His penchant for blood, guts and subtitles is obviously taking its toll. Having said that, this was a really good movie with excellent acting by a cast of unknowns and the costumes were unreal. Bloodthirsty to the max but in context with the theme. As usual Mel uses artistic licence and a vivid imagination to depict a time in history where you could only hazard a guess as to how things really were. Well worth watching.

4 stars. This is a beautifully photographed epic. The costumes are amazing as is the art direction. The characters are real and the subtitles don't get in the way at all. It is graphically violent in keeping with the Mayan culture.

So much for allegations that white man "enslaved" these natives. They were already slaves in their own societies. This film surely convinces us that white man was justified in ending the cruel and barbaric practises of these ancient civilizations.

Despite initial reservations about having to watch a movie with subtiltles this turned out to be an exceptional film. Gibson sure knows how to tell a story and tell it well. The abundance of action and gore may put some off, but I thought it was a necessary part of the story and heartily recommend the DVD to all.
