Coarse language and sex scene

Director: Rob Sitch
Actors: Josh Lawson, Rachael Taylor, Daniel Henshall, Felicity Ward, Christian Clark, Jodi Gordon, Ed Kavalee, Rob Carlton, Lachy Hulme

For 27-year-old Ben (Josh Lawson), life couldn’t be better. A well paid job, friends, parties, girls and nothing to tie him down. But when he is invited back to his old school to join several other ex-students including Alex (Rachael Taylor) and Jim (Ed Kavalee) in talking about their personal achievements, something goes wrong. Ben is the only speaker not to be asked a question by the school kids. This triggers a year of soul searching and looking for answers in all the wrong places.

From his best friend Andy, whose solution is that they both take another holiday, to his mentor Sam, who loans him a sports car in the belief that there's nothing like excessive speed to resolve emotional turmoil. Not even Ben's father or friends, Nick and Em, can offer much in the way of meaningful guidance. Of course, it's not easy seeking enlightenment in nightclubs, or on the ski fields of New Zealand, and when you start dating a Russian tennis star things can get really complicated. As the poster boy for a generation desperate to tick every box, Ben begins to suspect that the meaning of life may well reside in the things he's already doing - and a girl he used to know.

Any Questions for Ben seeks to solve the very conundrum pondered since the advent of cinema, if not art and human communication itself: what are handsome, wealthy, young men really supposed to do with their lives? Before Woody Allen awkwardly fretted over his well-paying jobs and unrealistically gorgeous sexual partners, and eons earlier than a recently dumped John Cusack could flick his coat collar up in the rain and walk away from his ex’s window, there must have been a caveman who thought there might be more to existence than just ‘hunting’, and wondered whether the female mate he had clubbed and dragged back to his cave was in fact ‘the one’.

It’s odd that the team at Working Dog – including director Rob Sitch, and his co-writers Santo Cilauro and Tom Gleisner – would make their first film in almost twelve years about such a tired cinematic trope. But even though Any Questions for Ben never really produces any unique answers to make it a revelatory rom-com, it has an easy, low-stakes charm, and is buoyed by its very talented cast of performers.

Josh Lawson – long deserving of a vehicle – stars as the eponymous Ben, a 27-year-old strategic brand manager whose sense of self is as vague as his job description. Any lingering doubts he might have about his lot in life are quietened by an impressive cash-flow and the parade of models into his bedroom each night. It’s only when Ben is invited to speak at his former school’s assembly as a seemingly high-achieving graduate that his concerns rise to the surface. Why are the students so interested in asking beautiful Yemen-based United Nations lawyer Alex (Rachael Taylor) about the ways in which she’s changing the world, but have no queries about his recent vodka rebranding exercise? Ben’s struggle to define his internal confusion as anything other than ‘weird’ means no one can quite diagnose his malaise; not his dad (Rob Carlton, an uncanny spitting image of Lawson Sr.), not his rough-around-the-edges mentor (Lachy Hulme), and not even his super supportive buddies (Felicity Ward, Christian Clark, and, considering the horrible acts he perpetrated in Snowtown, a surprisingly adorable Daniel Henshall). But this is no Shame-style spiral into depravity and despair. Ben’s quest is suitably subtle, and takes place over the course of one procrastination-heavy year. This is how identities dissolve; not with a bang, but with a whimper.

Lawson deserves much of the praise for making sympathetic a character who could be considered the poster child for ‘first world problems’ (feeling ‘weird’ about one’s life is hardly a priority in this age of Occupy-Whatever). The script and performances are appropriately low-key, and recall the fine dramedies from Jay and Mark Duplass, such as The Puffy Chair and Cyrus, as well as other low-budget mumblecore movies Hannah Takes the Stairs and Mutual Appreciation. Perhaps the production is a little too slick considering the understated nature of the material; giant chunks of the picture feel like music videos or wine ads, and the semi-recurring titles on the screen describing each character are mildly annoying. Perhaps this is Sitch and company’s attempt to extend themselves aesthetically after mastering minimalist comedy in their previous not-as-pretty features, The Castle and The Dish. Any Questions for Ben doesn’t deserve a place next to those two in the hallowed pantheon of Australian comedies, but it’s a sweet, unassuming and occasionally very funny film.

3/5

This movie was a struggle to watch and boring indeed. Yes, I get the comedy - some laughs - especially around the rotating girlfriends and the balloon scene is memorable too. I did understand that the film is about a jet-setter with an empty life. But unfortunately "Any Questions for Ben" just didn't rise into any kind of substance to hold an audience. The breaks between scenes with titles of "one week later"/ "2 months later"/ etc seemed to suggest it was filmed for TV (to include the ads) which I found frustrating. Overall 2 stars: 1 star for including Arabic successfully and tastefully, and 1 BIG star for the beautiful coverage of Melbourne! Watch out for those landmarks and popular spots.

this movie was like lots of hick-ups, as the main character Ben cannot commit to any thing he does......so on it went. Not till Ben realized and finally settled did the movie slow down and was okay, so see it through its not that bad.

This movie was pure boredom. There were only TWO good things about it. (1) it showcased Melbourne really well - more movies should do this, and (2) the extra scene during the credits where Ben is talking to the immigration officials. If it wasn't for those two things, I would've given it 1 star.

I can't understand how it is rated 2.5 stars. It's an excellent movie. Well acted and a good story with likeable and well developed characters. I enjoyed getting a taste of Melbourne too.

Was OK. Did not really like the way it jumped about. Came across as if made for TV and they built in the add breaks.

This is a very funny film however the comedy is quite subtle and this may account for the reasons that it has not received good reviews. It is an interesting look at our narcissistic consumer driven culture as personified by Ben. Visually it is stunning - makes Melbourne look wonderful. Persevere - you won't be disappointed but its not an 'in your face' American comedy / romance so be warned

Movie was a bit disjointed, probably like Ben's life that was being portrayed. Reasonable with some good bits and other bits where the movie just seemed to be rolling along gong no where. One of these where you expected more after seeing the trailer - which probably had most of the humour.

I truly enjoyed this movie. I must admit that I tend to stay away from Aussie Movies because so many of them have been disappointing in my experience. I found it to be entertaining and funny and I especially enjoyed the music. I guess others are too young to appreciate the music in this flick. At the end of the movie I had to go back to the start to see who the writer/s were and was a little surprised. Cilauro, Gleisner and Sitch did a great job in my opinion.

The protagonist Ben is his own antagonist but it is apart from that a rather enjoyable and well made Aussie film. More for the Gen-Y viewing demographic as it touches on social and relationship selfishness and the sense of entitlement that the new generation feels they have over the older generation. Needless to say, it offers a small brief window into the psyche of the young and successful but I do wish the lead character Ben was a little more likeable.

A very contemporary, sharp but most importantly enjoyable insight into the life of overpaid, oversexed, over-indulged Gen Y's facing the horror of some laughable First World problems. Lawson's character with its self-deprecating humour was great...the film reminded me of when Australia used to make numerous Australian films that were fun, good-natured and positive (ie late 80s till mid 90s a la The Big Steal, Emerald City etc etc). There was a time when Australian films weren't depressing turgid politically-correct garbage but made you feel good....this harks back to that era. Great stuff.

An initially awkward Australian film beautifully shot in Melbourne warms on you quickly. The characters are all extreme versions of people we all almost know. The problems that the lead character, Ben, faces all stem from a successful career, VIP status in all the best bars, and a constant string of girls - making it a movie that is easy to relate to. The central theme of the film - like so many before - is the question of having the courage to make big moves. This movie does not disappoint and in a Love actually kind of way makes you think about about life and love for a lot longer than the prescribed 114 minutes. Featuring a cast of recognisable Australian actors whose names I don't know (including a tidy lead actress) there is something for everyone who hasn't executed their life with perfect clarity, confidence and conviction. And for those of us with ears a soundtrack including Gyroscope, Angus & Julia Stone, Ella Hooper, Kram and You am I make the majesty of Melbourne, angst and pain all that more beautiful.

Whilst I enjoyed this movie, I found Josh Lawson's character - Ben - getting more & more annoying as the movie progressed. Whilst funny in parts, I thought it could have been a lot wittier, given who wrote it. The soundtrack was the best part of it!!

A poor film from the folks who bought us 'The castle' and 'The dish'. It is neither funny, nor dramatic and largely fails because the central character is a self-absorbed plonker with all the charm of Dengue fever. It also felt like the producers were on commission for every song they could jam into the soundtrack and every scenic shot of Melbourne they could weave into the storyline, such as it was.

The best and funniest part of the whole movie was the credits when he was quizzed by the Customs staff. It was the only part that actually seemed natural. A bit sad really. Did Stitch and Co. finish up and walk away without watching it?

I really enjoyed this movie, having watched it on a plane recently decided to see it again. Very aussie, lots of fab people in it and some great scenery in Melbourne. I do understand that people are saying the Ben character is a bit narcissistic, but take the ride with him, it's really not a bad movie at all!! Fabulous soundtrack backs up a fab film. Suggest watching it!

I saw this at the local cinema. So Aussie and a fantastic sound track. Check out who the director is. Casting is mostly good, although the 'Ben' character can get a bit annoying at times. Basically, it is about a single male having a good time and who should be wearing a Tshirt with the words "It's all about me" written on it (narcissistic personality, for the psychology students). Eventually, he grows up and realises that the great love of his life has been right in front of him all the time. .......but is it too late?? Yes, a predictable plot but watch it for the great photography of Melbourne and the real Aussie character. Make sure you stay tuned for the credits at the end, as you watch 'Ben' trying to explain to Customs certain things.

Charming and lovely - just an enjoyable film requiring not much effort - certainly not brilliant but enjoyable none the less. We all tend to have the questions of 'What is my life all about' and this is done from the aussie, male perspective. I liked it.

This is the WORST movie I have ever seen. Its was boring, predictable, dull, slow moving and poorly acted. Basically a Doogie Howser lookalike with a self-indulgent lifestyle picks up women out of his league and has monotonous conversations. The star is for the iconic Melbourne scenery.

Fast-moving, energetic, funny, philosophic, romantic, realistic and very Australian. What's not to like? The lovely Melbourne settings are a plus, together with a couple of exotic destinations, a fine cast and a somewhat unpredictable story. The quest for finding meaning in life is treated both with respect and some irreverence.

While this movie was well acted and directed (although the editing could have been a bit tighter), we didn't care what happened to any of these characters. It might be enjoyable if you are a 20-something, wealthy corporate type who is tired of sleeping with hundreds of different women, but otherwise my advice would be to give it a miss.

I like Working Dog and most of the associated actors they cast in this movie. The soundtrack was great! Overall it was a good movie but I felt it dragged on a bit too long, we kind of got the idea very early on that Ben changes careers/houses/girlfriends as often as he changes his underwear - how many times can you rehash that? Despite this, I did really enjoy it and would recommend it.

Really enjoyed this movie. Nice caste of characters and scenes. Bit over the top like most aussie movies but it had its quieter moments also. I thought it was a good story and the script was great. Only gripe is the muffled dialogue at times but that seems to be a feature of all modern movies.

I've got a question for Ben... Why is he such an idiot? A man in his late 20's wonders why he can't follow through... Keeps getting new jobs, new apartments, new girlfriends... He finally comes to his senses and wants to make things a bit more permanent. Good sound track, much better than the acting.

To me it was an Australians version of 'Four Weddings & A Funeral' without the gorgeous Hugh Grant ! ! ! Would make a great add for the Victorian travel bureau with The Melbourne Cup. Yarra River Cruise, Carols By Candle Light, Australian Open Tennis, Champaine Balloon Flights and everything for the travelers to do list! ! ! ! Over all a pleasant enough storyline with the usual Aussies love of sex scenes & drinking in bars? ? ? ?

Wow, never did I think I would watch a Working Dog production that I would fast forward through as much as I did this. I got to an hour and hit the FF button to 'watch' the rest.. I'm not sure whether to say this came across as nothing more than a major advertisement for Melbourne, or, that un-intentionally it may become one of the best movies made for a drinking game. Have a shot for every time you get a Melbourne/Melbourne skyline shot, and when you have an unnecessary song played. You would probably need at least two bottles of something for the first half hour, let alone the rest of the movie. And yes I am a Sydneysider, and no I have nothing against Melbourne, was there a few months ago and it was lovely. But the constant shots of Melbourne and soooo many songs were serious overkill. Not even the wonderful Lachy Hulme could save this for me.
