Loved it. Great Aussie movie. Acting, story, everything. Gritty and confronting. A must watch.
one of the best movies that I have seen. I was drawn in and could not take my eyes off it. It is ages since I have seen a really good Australian movie and I am reminded that Australia can produce really good cinema. This is well worth watching , the kind of movie that you are still thinking about days after watching it!!!
Easily one of the greatest Australian movies of all time. Jacki Weaver's performance in this is among the best I've ever seen!
Better than expected, good casting, maybe went for a little too long
A powerful and disturbing movie that rings very true, relating to what we read in the news most weeks. It shows how human being can inhabit hell lives and not even know it. Scary.
Certainly not uplifting but what a great movie. The characters are so real and Jackie is superb in the role of the mother in this extraordinary, sad family.
Disc is almost unwatchable
Good tv drama, that is about it. Actually enjoy the channel nine's under belly series in comparison to this.
well i was very disappionted with this movie all the hype it got from the critics well i thought it was useless but thats only my thoughts
Really good Australian movie, some of us are so use to Hollywood Acting. Animal Kingdom is just how it was in the criminal scene in the 80's. The characters were familiar.
Gritty Australian drama. Loved the ending. Great story
I rarely give 5 stars. Not everybody's cup of tea. Excellent dialogue, acting, filmography. Lion King meets Scarface.
OMG - Jackie Weaver's mother was frightening.
Powerful film, not for the light hearted, great acting
My husband was keen to see it, I wasn't sure and I think my concerns were justified, it was not my sort of movie.
Probably true to life for the criminal world but rather depressing. If you want an uplifting movie, skip this one
What utter rubbish. It is so slow and uninteresting and the dialogue is pathetic. I would not recommend this film in any way. There was no redeeming feature to it at all.
excellent australian movie
I have a new love/hate relationship with Ben Mendelsohn - he was so brilliant he made quiver with disgust. A violent, evil and chilling movie - yet brilliantly compelling.
Very poor film, was not helped by the fact that the disc was unplayable, from about 2/3 of the way through.
Amazing, suspenseful film. Keeps you drawn in. Sad that so many people seemed to completely miss the genius of the film and rate it slow and boring. It was anything but.
Was looking forward to seeing this movie with some fantastic aussie actors however was disappointed as slow in many parts and no real surprises.
A good Aussie crim flick, with strong performances throughout especially from the young lead. Jackie Weaver also very good & I'm pleased for her she got an Oscar nomination, but the stand out for me was Ben Mendelsohn with one of the best pieces of work I've seen from him for a while. Good overall but I'd still rate Matt Saville's "Noise" as a superior exploration of the disturbing criminal underside of Australian urban life.
I can see why Jacqui Weaver was nominated for an award for her performance in this movie - definately played the protective lioness very well. While watching this movie I couldnt help think it was the same director as the First Underbelly Series. Very well done
Boring to the point of annoying. Spent most of the time watching it on fast speed just to get it over with. Possibly should not have bothered even doing that. Yes it is Australian and yes it has some good actors in it - but doesn't make it good.
OK a bit slow but not bad
excellent storyline and good acting
Fantastic Australian Movie. Kept me watching. Deserves all the accolades it has received.
good directing, subtle drama, didn't like the open ending, like what;s going to J after shooting Pope?
Another classic Aussie crime thriller, with a trace of Underbelly to keep us guessing! Is there a link?
watch the boys, much better movie than this
Great film. Definitely recommend this one.
Australian films don't often get it right, but when they do...they get it soooo damn right!
GOOD AUSSIE FILM. WORTH A LOOK
Excellent movie. Casting for this movie was very good. Joel Edg at his best. I can't believe we waited so long to watch it. Recommended reviewing.
In its defence I have to say that it may have got better, we could only stand it for about 20 minutes and that was about 15 minutes after we thought we should turn it off. It had no plot, acting was real bad, the screenplay was amateurish, even the camera work was poor. This has sent Australian movie production back 15 years. Not even worth 1/2 a star. If you are the sort of person who likes underbelly you may like this.
Really good movie enjoyed
Slow starting and a bit sleasy so nearly turned it off. But it turned out to be a good movie
Accomplished film by a group of very hard working Australian film makers. Well done!
Great acting, the story was a little old but I thought it was still a good aussie movie. Ben Mendelsohn is Menacing in this movie and really captured this character.
Depressing and cover-your-eyes cringeworthy for so much of the story, and scary because of how much of it is a true story! (my narrative went 'Oh no, no way, oh don't.....seriously!')
Can't fault the actors, although I'm not sure how difficult it is to portray a bogan crack killer or an immoral ocker grandma, but I was dissapointed that Joel Edgerton didn't feature more, as his was the only character I half liked.
I wish Australian films could be spectacular without being so gritty, however well executed this was like an overblown version of Underbelly something-or-other and I was left with a nauseous, oily feeling in my stomach after watching it. Some might say that's a successful film because it makes you feel 'something', but that's a feeling I'd rather skip, thanks.
This film was hideous. Having lived outside of Australia for 5 years - to return here to have reaffirmed my disgust at the lowlife films Australia produces - all Australian films depict low lifers, losers or films like Wolf Creek etc - it's no wonder many overseas countries look down on us. Continuing to make garbage films like this will totally kill off Australia's tourism industry too. Makes me ashamed to be Australian.
It was ok, not enough background information as to how each person was in that predicament. It was just average. I was expecting a bigger role by the main female that was nominated for all the awards.
My husband however thoroughly enjoyed it so its definately more of a blokes movie
thought it would be a lot better than it was
Well acted, but got lost in the angst and realism which many Australian films feel they must show.
Completely bloody over-hyped and over-rated... and so s l o w
Disappointing, not as good as I thought it would be.
Everything was done badly!
very good movie. kinda sad in places.. especially with the girl :((
Awesome movie & a great piece of Aussie film making! Highly recommended!
Ben Mendelhson does creepy better than anyone.
Though very good, I'm not sure why Jacki Weaver received an Academy Award nomination
Great acting, Australia is full of talented actors.
Not knowing anything aboout the plot or liking the Underbelly series, I expected I would not watch it through. Excellent casting, understated but powerful performances, and suspenseful throughout, it was very good. As another reviewer says, one of the best Aussie movies of late. James Frecheville, has a brooding quality that reminds me of young Marlon Brando or James Spader. Guy Pearce renewed my appreciation of his talent. If I forget I'm watching actors they are doing a very good job and the whole cast were strong. To those who say its slow, you missed a lot.
Hubby loved this movie. A good Aussie flick, with some great acting in it. Horrible to see what we can do to one another and how the crime world thinks and operates (even though fiction). Enjoyed the movie
I really liked this movie. A good Aussie film with depth, excitement and drama. Recommended definitely.
Like a lot of Aussie films it can be a bit slow at times but the whole thing is amazing.
I wanted to watch this because it is Australian, and because of the hype about the movie, as well as Jacki Weaver's talked about performance. Well, I was disappointed. The acting was good but the movie was uninteresting and lacked some punch. Jacki Weaver didn't leave me with a good impression, I didn't think she was anything other than just ok!! Love Ben M. I wouldn't recommend, or watch again.
I had no idea what this movie was about, except that it was Australian, and there was so much hype about it, I decided to add it to my queue. I found it slow, almost to the point of boring me, for most of the movie. Towards the ending is where I found it to be the most interesting. I feel sorry for the poor kid, being thrown in to a family like that, but in the end, Pope gets what he deserves. Not sure if Jackie Weaver did this fantastic job that deserved her going to America to look for more roles. Her character was deceitful, conniving, stupid? How can she how see that her kids are actually guilty of these things?
Jackie Weaver was exceptional. An interesting insight in to the underworld in Melbourne. Very close to my heart as I am a serving police officer. Jackie Weaver definitely deserved her Academy award nomination. True portrayal of the situation with the Armed hold squad breaking the law to get results. Well written
Hard to say good movie - one part in particular was especially disturbing. Could have been better, too many loose ends for my liking. Never seen Ben M so scary before!
Good Aussie movie. It took awhile to get going. I thought all the actors were good and it was well balanced . Plot was good although i wasnt sure where the cop/boy relationshipwas was meant to going.3.5/5
What a disappointment! Dragged out plot. Mediocre acting by Jackie Weaver, Ben Mendolsen and Guy Pearce, totally unconvincing after seeing this movie could not understand what all the hype was about.
Fantastic movie, fantastic acting, well written, well filmed, absolutely worth watching.
World class movie. Great acting and storyline. I was reluctant to see this movie initially due to the subject matter, but found myself entranced with the story and actors. It had true grit and believability. I can see why all the hype was generated from this flick.
The best Australia film I've seen in a long time.
This was a fantastic movie and a great take on a true life story. Brilliant Aussie Actors...will purchase this DVD because i loved it soooo much!!!
Typically Australian made gangster movie. Had enough after half an hour. Am amazed by the hype it received, which was also the reason I selected it for my queue. Australian film-makers should stick to what they do best and that is animation!
An excellent Australian film. Great casting. So realistic you feel sick for the main character!
Terrible movie, very slow, acting was good, but was very bored with movie.
We really enjoyed this film. It was a well written and the actors portrayed the characters extremely well. You had to watch the film without distractions to keep up with the storyline, which kept us glued to the couch. Great movie.
I realy enjoyed this movie, especialy as it is Ausse, and a true story.Jackie Weaver was brilliant as smurf.Loved it.Virginia Katz
This movie was a little over hyped for me by friends, so I expected more. But hey, I'm not you, so check it out.
I loved this film. Very emotionally draining though. And and caused me to swear at the characters (one of my friends commented she has never heard me swear so much.. lol). Another of my friends who watched it with me said she liked it but found it very uncomfortable viewing. Jackie Weaver was brilliant. They all were really. We were all very glad we saw this one.
i found it very slow more like a tv mini
Jackie Weaver was good but couldn't save a film that showcases criminal and depraved behaviour in a "family" setting. Revolting.
No where near as good as all the hoohaa made it out to be, very disappointing.
I thought this film was excellent. The acting was good. It was sad to see an innocent boy be drawn into the family circle and what they did, especially to his girlfriend. I think it was "based" on a family in Melbourne, but the story did not fit true events.
Realistic Australian crime story.
We hired this to see what all the hype was about. I'm usually not a fan of Australian film as I usually find them predictable and boring, but this was very good. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the characters of Pope and the mother are silently chilling. A nice surprise!
very tough, gritty picture of Melbourne gangland life. Script, acting and production was wonderful. Very high quality film.
DISC WAS NOT WATCHABLE, FREEZING CONSTANTLY. DO NOT WANT A REPLACEMENT, AS I WENT TO VIDEO STORE AND HIRED FROM THERE.
Loved it !! Great Aussie Film
it was so boring i couldnt be bothered watching it right out.
the characters were just way too dull.
I didn't particulary like this movie too much swearing for me. I know the story was based on true events but I thought it was over the top with the language. My husband liked the movie he saw passed the language.
There's a dark, brooding mood underlying this entire movie. You sit on the edge of your seat just knowing that something sinister is going to happen. Great Aussie flick!
I enjoyed Jackie Weaver's performance. Not my type of movie!
My fiance really liked this but I wasn't that sure about it. To me, it felt like another Underbelly, with more slow motion and mood music. I can't see how the makers put the disclaimer at the end saying that the movie is not base don any real events and any resemblance is purely coincidental when the whole film is clearly based on Walsh Street and the Pettinghill family. I thought it glorified them and made them out to be half decent people, when we know that most of them are murderous junkies. I struggled to separate the movie from the real life events, so maybe that ruined it for me. If you have no knowledge of Walsh St, then you might enjoy it more.
fantastic, loved it, underbelly but with tangible characters
Abrasive and unashamedly Australian. I found the whole thing gripping, un-nerving and very hard to watch!
After all the hype this film was a let down. Although it kept my attention I expected more from it.
Took a while to get into the movie, then enjoyed it.
Gritty aussie drama. Great characters - almost didn't recognise Ben Mendelsohn. All players did justice to their roles, not just Jackie Weaver! Riveting, did not expect the ending.
This is another superb example of what Australia has to offer. This hard hitting, true life drama is well worth adding to your list.
Fantastic Australian movie.
Anyones neighbourhood.
All though this movie had good reviews i felt there wasn`t a very good story to keep
me involved then it stoped playing about 20 mins into the movie
I finally got to see it! It pretty much lived up to all the hype and had me on tenterhooks towards the end. Excellent understated performances esp by Ben Mendelsohn (middle-aged, aggghhh!) and the young male lead. Superb ending. And yes indeed, crime never pays!
Brilliant movie. While being Australian it wasn't blatantly shoved in your face, the references were subtle though still reminded you exactly of what it was, i.e. tv shows, accents, car references etc. This movie was beautifully shot, the performances by actors were both believable and gave the viewer a sense of relation. It portrayed the gritty life of a crime family but did so without going into the over-the-top theatrics of nowadays films. A definite must for anyone into Australian film, or even anyone who wants a down to earth crime drama.
A rather dull exposition of an unmemorable family
Probably a well made movie drama but not entertaining about a loser family. One needs to be in the right mood to watch this one.
Great film. Was actaally not looking forward to it as thuoght it might be full of gratuitous violence etc.. but it was not an American 'gangster movie.' It was extremely well done - charcater development - great.
Intelligent film. Recommend
A great Aussie film of families and the edge of the law: Underbelly for suburbia.
Not quite right, compared to the real events. A good story.
Very well done but chilling
I can't understand why Jackie Weaver would be nominated for an Osca,I wouldn't say her acting was anything special, this is a B grade movue
Very scary -realism made it more so.
I found this film all absorbing, from start to finish. The film is character centred, and each of the characters played their part exceptionally well. Above all, I pay tribute to the production and camera work, which allows the viewers to think and work out things for themselves. Brilliant piece of work.
wow great aust film i was glad to have seen it similar story to that of underbelly.
Did not enjoy this movie at all, it was so slow,I kept waiting for something to happen! As for Jacki Weaver being nominated for best actress in it - eh?? She hardly HAD a part! Disappointing and over rated.
Very disappointed in the movie too much swearing and voilence.
Really enjoyed this movie, however kept freezing - quite annoying
The worst movie I have ever sat through!!!!!!!
Has to be one of my top 5 worst movies of all time!
Don't know why Jackie Weaver was nominated for an Oscar.
Very basic "Underbelly " movie
Fantastic held my interest right to the end excellent talent love the way ordinary people from that almost secret layer of underworld in City Australia are portrayed not necessarily formally educated but exceptionally street smart people/characters
Not sure what all the fuss was about over this one.
a good movie that kept you watching, all about a crime family, doing robberies and murders in Melbourne. Good characters especially J, acaertainly worth watching
Grim tale of a Melbourne crime family containing a few sociopaths who get custody of a 17 year old nephew and suck him into their battle with the cops. The tension created by edgy complex supporting performances counterbalances the presence of a pretty inarticulate protagonist. Melbourne is only just recognizable -- this could be any Australian suburban landscape. I should add that the movie works as well as it does BECAUSE of the inarticulateness of the lead character -- we don't know exactly what he is thinking and that builds suspense (as in A Prophet).
We did not enjoy this movie at all, whilst the acting was quite good, it did nothing for us
This is a superb, slow-burn drama. If you are looking for a Hollywood-style mindless action flick with 2-dimensional characters, look elsewhere. This movie has a rich tapestry of characters, and a drama that unfolds throughout. Ben Mendelsohn is a standout, with a haunting and memorable portrayal of a character with a sociopathic disorder. Jacki Weaver is also sublime as the matriarch.
Well acted by a great aussie cast. A tight film with every scene intergal to the story but ultimately a depressing tale.
Enjoyed This Aussie Movie Jackie Weaver was at her best
V. disappointing. all talk and no action
Interesting. Ben Mendlesohn excellent. Something lost between the script and the direction resulting in lack of punch.
Not bad for an Australian film. Didn't make me cringe.
Well, what can I say. What an excellent movie and everyone should see it, especially since it's Australian. The best.
A good gutsy movie that keeps your attention with plenty of action.
I enjoyed the movie. What a sad life some people have. It makes you appreciate your own good life!
While the movie is completely unoriginal in story and plot, and is therefore pretty inevitable, it does have five star acting from the whole cast. Ben Mendelsohn is the standout actor, while Jacki Weaver is merely a supporting actor. It has to be said that the film is not well made, and has lots of boring bits. Frankly, I've seen better tv show. I found it easy to stop and start the movie whenever I needed a break from the computer, and you can't do that with a really great movie.
I thought it was a dreadful movie. So boring it was like a copycat of many other movies.
Excellent Aussie movie drama, well-paced, realistic and riveting scenario ! Perfect film for watching on DVD, and Jackie Weaver's nominations well deserved. This film may even qualify for being in our Top Ten Aussie Films !
disappointed after all the good reviews and award nominations this movie was a let down ,slow and painstaking to watch at times ,the last half hour something actually happened
This was a dark movie with great build up of tension and menace. Ben Mendelsohn was brilliant as the psychopathic criminal (where is his Oscar nomination?) while Jackie Weaver was oily and evil as the mother who created a dysfunctional family (but I don't think she was on screen enough to warrant the Oscar nomination).
I hadn't been caught up in the hype of this movie, it had been recommended by a friend. I had no idea what I was about to watch so had no expectations. This movie was excellent, it was so strong in delivering the message of how things can turn out for one innocent life because of the family he was a part of. Loved the ending!
It takes a while to really get to grips with what is happening in this movie. It then becomes increasingly apparent where good and evil lie, but it's not as obvious which will prevail. Australia has always done cops and crims well on TV - it's good to see that excellence transferred to a movie.
Rented this movie for my husband who gave it two stars and said it was slow and boring, to the point where he fast-forwarded through parts of it. Five minutes into Public Enemies with all the gunfire and his response was "This is more like it," so maybe it was the lack of action in Animal Kingdom.
After the hype of this Australian movie, I was initially disappointed.
It is quite a slow movie, and also a little predictable. The music was telling us, some one was getting killed...
However, when the movie was over, I thougth about it, and this movie left quite an impreossion.. About a young man, that is in an environment and gets shaped by it. ....
slow movie, true, but the acting was excellent, the scenes were realistic.. It still 'grabs you' and you want to know what is gonahappen next...The scenes were quite realistic (I have been there)
Have alook and tell me if you agree!
I was slightly disappointed after all the hype. Ben Mendleson is excellent, and Jackie Weaver stands out as the manipulative, over protective Mother, who is probably the root cause of all the issues and lifestyles that the sons have!!
Although there was some tension and inevitability built up throughout the film, at times it labours along, with too many time filling bits of silence. Having said all that, it is still worth a look.
Nice cinematography, and strong performances from all. It was slow and dreamy in parts it felt like it was trying to over dramatise some scenes.
It left me a little disappointed and wanting more . . .
awesome australian movie, incorporating the best of aust more intelligent and less commercial than underbelly, didnt know what was coming for the whole movie, really enjoyed, great cast well worth watching
Must be close to the worst film I've ever seen.Hard to follow at times.
Bit slow , could have been better paced , great performances but the script has gaps where there is no dialogue. I think that is an Australian mistake because this does happen a lot in Australian drama .
Underbelly bits put together to make this film. Barely disguised!
3 stars
Has to be the most over rated australian movie ever! It was OK, but I was expecting much more. It seemed like it didn't go into enough detail at times, although the movie was fairly long. Some good acting performances, but overall disappointing.
Crime family feels the heat of the police and spirals out of control. Better than average example of this genre which doesn't quite achieve the level of tension I would have hoped. I think this is largely due to the uninspired performance of Ben Mendelsohn who can't compete with David Wenham's menacing performance in a similar themed The Boys. 3.5 stars
To say this one of the best Australian films I have seen would be understating it somewhat. I am simply stunned by its power, its ability to tell a story about characters that are so believeable they could be your neighbours. Ben Mendelsohn's Pope is about the most chilling, evil, pathological character I have seen since David Wenham's character in 'The Boys'. I cannot believe Jackie Weaver as Smurf- she could play any character and make the audience completely believe her.
Certainly the subject matter is 'unsavoury' and not very nice, but the quality of this film should be shouted all over the world. Absolutely brilliant!!!
Certainly was over-dramatized in reviews. Put it this way, wouldn't watch it twice.
Seen better Oz movies.
Brilliant! This movie will raise the standards of Australian film.
