Strong violence, drug use and coarse language

Director: David Michod
Actors: James Frecheville, Ben Mendelsohn, Jacki Weaver, Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton, Luke Ford, Sullivan Stapleton, Daniel Wyllie, Anthony Hayes, Laura Wheelwright

Armed robber Pope Cody (Ben Mendelsohn) is in hiding, on the run from a gang of renegade detectives who want him dead. His business partner and best friend, Barry "Baz" Brown (Joel Edgerton), wants out of the game, recognising that their days of old-school banditry are all but over. Pope's younger brother, the speed-addicted and volatile Craig Cody (Sullivan Stapleton), is making a fortune in the illicit substances trade - the true cash cow of the modern criminal fraternity - whilst the youngest Cody brother, Darren (Luke Ford), naively navigates his way through this criminal world - the only world his family has ever known.

by Simon Miraudo,

For anyone who still thinks Australia only produces boring films about the outback, Animal Kingdom should come as a welcome gunshot to the head. Here is a crime drama that makes Blue Murder and Underbelly appear about as confronting as an episode of Ship to Shore. It’s unflinching, gut wrenching and expertly executed, to the point where Samson and Delilah and Balibo seem like a light-hearted Nick Giannopoulos double feature by comparison. And it has me filled with such patriotic pride that I have been moved to fill the past three sentences with no less than six Aussie film and TV references. I’m getting it out of the way early, because simply calling Animal Kingdom “the best Australian film in years” is hardly enough praise for David Michôd’s brutal crime drama. This is a film worthy of the world stage; to limit its worth as simply an Australian export would be an insult.

That’s not to say Australian films are lacking in quality. Last year we were treated to Samson and Delilah, Lake Mungo and Mary and Max – three of the finest films this country has ever produced. It’s just that Animal Kingdom hits you deep in your gut, the way in which few films ever do, regardless of their nation of origin. I can’t recall the last time I was so captivated by a thriller; perhaps No Country for Old Men. You know the feeling – the growing dread, the sweat on the palm of your hands, the distress of the inevitable. You would bury your head in your hands, if only you could tear your eyes away.

Animal Kingdom is told from the perspective of Josh Cody (outstanding newcomer James Frecheville), a somewhat bewildered teenager caught in the middle of his family’s devastating cycle of revenge. Following the fatal overdose of his mother, Josh moves into the home of his estranged grandma Smurf (Jacki Weaver) and uncles Darren (Luke Ford) and Craig (Sullivan Stapleton). The newly orphaned teen finds the house to be the center of operations for the Cody crime syndicate. Darren and Craig, along with unstable older brother Pope (Ben Mendelsohn) and thoughtful family friend Baz (Joel Edgerton), once made up an unstoppable bank-robbing team. But the police are now well and truly on their tail – not even a brief hiatus from the life of crime will keep the Codys safe from justice. Tragedy strikes, and the family kicks into vengeance mode. As the death toll between the cops and robbers grows larger, Josh finds himself forced to pick a side. Does he dare align himself with the increasingly disturbed Pope and ferociously protective Smurf, or can he trust Senior Sergeant Nathan Leckie (Guy Pearce) to pull him out of this mess?

Writer-director Michôd’s story seems to have been inspired by 1) the 1988 Walsh Street shootings, a real-life revenge play that took place in Melbourne and 2) William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Titus Andronicus, a similar tale of retribution that gets way out of hand (Animal Kingdom is – thankfully – more restrained than Big Willie’s mutilation and cannibalism-happy drama). Amazingly, Michôd’s tale never dissolves into a sprawling mess. The events of his film progress naturally and the relationships always feel real (yes, even Smurf’s disturbing proclivity for kissing her sons on the mouth).

Michôd’s astoundingly assured direction separates this film from traditional crime dramas. These days, hand a director a screenplay for a movie about criminals, and they’ll either turn it into a over-inflated epic brimming with self-importance, or a flashy, trashy, substance-free montage of blood and boobs (see: every episode of Underbelly). Michôd’s direction instead recalls the work of Gus Van Sant, particularly his dreamy 2007 picture Paranoid Park. He’s a fitting director to draw inspiration from; few filmmakers understand teenagers like Van Sant, and now, the same can be said for Michôd. In fact, Animal Kingdom can be read as a tale of a boy becoming a man. The film begins with brief narration from Frecheville’s Josh, in which he explains how the events we are about to witness simply happened around him, as if he is trying to paint himself as an innocent spectator – a young boy who didn’t know any better. As the film progresses, we see just how intricately involved Josh is with the whole ordeal, culminating in a shocking finale - or shall we call it 'a coming of age'. Needless to say, the haunting memory of that opening narration will remain a disturbing worm in your brain.

Frecheville’s performance is not the only stunner. Mendelsohn, Sullivan, Ford, Edgerton and Weaver all convey the different sides of the criminal coin with uncanny proficiency. Have these five actors ever been better than they are here? Pearce is also suitably understated as Sgt. Leckie. I haven’t even mentioned the many other Aussie actors who also give pitch-perfect performances in their minor roles. The whole film feels like a showcase for home-grown talent. Cinematographer Adam Arkapaw constructs some vivid and lingering shots, while editor Luke Doolan (Oscar nominated director of short film Miracle Fish) creates some of the most intense sequences this side of Zodiac. Everyone brings their A-game. They know it won’t be long before the rest of the world sits up and takes notice of just how spectacular Animal Kingdom is. Thankfully, we Aussies get to enjoy it first.

5/5

A good Aussie crim flick, with strong performances throughout especially from the young lead. Jackie Weaver also very good & I'm pleased for her she got an Oscar nomination, but the stand out for me was Ben Mendelsohn with one of the best pieces of work I've seen from him for a while. Good overall but I'd still rate Matt Saville's "Noise" as a superior exploration of the disturbing criminal underside of Australian urban life.

In its defence I have to say that it may have got better, we could only stand it for about 20 minutes and that was about 15 minutes after we thought we should turn it off. It had no plot, acting was real bad, the screenplay was amateurish, even the camera work was poor. This has sent Australian movie production back 15 years. Not even worth 1/2 a star. If you are the sort of person who likes underbelly you may like this.

Depressing and cover-your-eyes cringeworthy for so much of the story, and scary because of how much of it is a true story! (my narrative went 'Oh no, no way, oh don't.....seriously!') Can't fault the actors, although I'm not sure how difficult it is to portray a bogan crack killer or an immoral ocker grandma, but I was dissapointed that Joel Edgerton didn't feature more, as his was the only character I half liked. I wish Australian films could be spectacular without being so gritty, however well executed this was like an overblown version of Underbelly something-or-other and I was left with a nauseous, oily feeling in my stomach after watching it. Some might say that's a successful film because it makes you feel 'something', but that's a feeling I'd rather skip, thanks.

This film was hideous. Having lived outside of Australia for 5 years - to return here to have reaffirmed my disgust at the lowlife films Australia produces - all Australian films depict low lifers, losers or films like Wolf Creek etc - it's no wonder many overseas countries look down on us. Continuing to make garbage films like this will totally kill off Australia's tourism industry too. Makes me ashamed to be Australian.

Not knowing anything aboout the plot or liking the Underbelly series, I expected I would not watch it through. Excellent casting, understated but powerful performances, and suspenseful throughout, it was very good. As another reviewer says, one of the best Aussie movies of late. James Frecheville, has a brooding quality that reminds me of young Marlon Brando or James Spader. Guy Pearce renewed my appreciation of his talent. If I forget I'm watching actors they are doing a very good job and the whole cast were strong. To those who say its slow, you missed a lot.

I wanted to watch this because it is Australian, and because of the hype about the movie, as well as Jacki Weaver's talked about performance. Well, I was disappointed. The acting was good but the movie was uninteresting and lacked some punch. Jacki Weaver didn't leave me with a good impression, I didn't think she was anything other than just ok!! Love Ben M. I had no idea what this movie was about, except that it was Australian, and there was so much hype about it, I decided to add it to my queue. I found it slow, almost to the point of boring me, for most of the movie. Towards the ending is where I found it to be the most interesting. I feel sorry for the poor kid, being thrown in to a family like that, but in the end, Pope gets what he deserves. Not sure if Jackie Weaver did this fantastic job that deserved her going to America to look for more roles. Her character was deceitful, conniving, stupid? How can she how see that her kids are actually guilty of these things?

My fiance really liked this but I wasn't that sure about it. To me, it felt like another Underbelly, with more slow motion and mood music. I can't see how the makers put the disclaimer at the end saying that the movie is not base don any real events and any resemblance is purely coincidental when the whole film is clearly based on Walsh Street and the Pettinghill family. I thought it glorified them and made them out to be half decent people, when we know that most of them are murderous junkies. I struggled to separate the movie from the real life events, so maybe that ruined it for me. If you have no knowledge of Walsh St, then you might enjoy it more.

Brilliant movie. While being Australian it wasn't blatantly shoved in your face, the references were subtle though still reminded you exactly of what it was, i.e. tv shows, accents, car references etc. This movie was beautifully shot, the performances by actors were both believable and gave the viewer a sense of relation. It portrayed the gritty life of a crime family but did so without going into the over-the-top theatrics of nowadays films. A definite must for anyone into Australian film, or even anyone who wants a down to earth crime drama.

I found this film all absorbing, from start to finish. The film is character centred, and each of the characters played their part exceptionally well. Above all, I pay tribute to the production and camera work, which allows the viewers to think and work out things for themselves. Brilliant piece of work.

Fantastic held my interest right to the end excellent talent love the way ordinary people from that almost secret layer of underworld in City Australia are portrayed not necessarily formally educated but exceptionally street smart people/characters

Grim tale of a Melbourne crime family containing a few sociopaths who get custody of a 17 year old nephew and suck him into their battle with the cops. The tension created by edgy complex supporting performances counterbalances the presence of a pretty inarticulate protagonist. Melbourne is only just recognizable -- this could be any Australian suburban landscape. I should add that the movie works as well as it does BECAUSE of the inarticulateness of the lead character -- we don't know exactly what he is thinking and that builds suspense (as in A Prophet).

This is a superb, slow-burn drama. If you are looking for a Hollywood-style mindless action flick with 2-dimensional characters, look elsewhere. This movie has a rich tapestry of characters, and a drama that unfolds throughout. Ben Mendelsohn is a standout, with a haunting and memorable portrayal of a character with a sociopathic disorder. Jacki Weaver is also sublime as the matriarch.

While the movie is completely unoriginal in story and plot, and is therefore pretty inevitable, it does have five star acting from the whole cast. Ben Mendelsohn is the standout actor, while Jacki Weaver is merely a supporting actor. It has to be said that the film is not well made, and has lots of boring bits. Frankly, I've seen better tv show. I found it easy to stop and start the movie whenever I needed a break from the computer, and you can't do that with a really great movie.

This was a dark movie with great build up of tension and menace. Ben Mendelsohn was brilliant as the psychopathic criminal (where is his Oscar nomination?) while Jackie Weaver was oily and evil as the mother who created a dysfunctional family (but I don't think she was on screen enough to warrant the Oscar nomination).

I hadn't been caught up in the hype of this movie, it had been recommended by a friend. I had no idea what I was about to watch so had no expectations. This movie was excellent, it was so strong in delivering the message of how things can turn out for one innocent life because of the family he was a part of. Loved the ending!

It takes a while to really get to grips with what is happening in this movie. It then becomes increasingly apparent where good and evil lie, but it's not as obvious which will prevail. Australia has always done cops and crims well on TV - it's good to see that excellence transferred to a movie.

Rented this movie for my husband who gave it two stars and said it was slow and boring, to the point where he fast-forwarded through parts of it. Five minutes into Public Enemies with all the gunfire and his response was "This is more like it," so maybe it was the lack of action in Animal Kingdom.

After the hype of this Australian movie, I was initially disappointed. It is quite a slow movie, and also a little predictable. The music was telling us, some one was getting killed... However, when the movie was over, I thougth about it, and this movie left quite an impreossion.. About a young man, that is in an environment and gets shaped by it. .... slow movie, true, but the acting was excellent, the scenes were realistic.. It still 'grabs you' and you want to know what is gonahappen next...The scenes were quite realistic (I have been there) Have alook and tell me if you agree!

I was slightly disappointed after all the hype. Ben Mendleson is excellent, and Jackie Weaver stands out as the manipulative, over protective Mother, who is probably the root cause of all the issues and lifestyles that the sons have!! Although there was some tension and inevitability built up throughout the film, at times it labours along, with too many time filling bits of silence. Having said all that, it is still worth a look.

Nice cinematography, and strong performances from all. It was slow and dreamy in parts it felt like it was trying to over dramatise some scenes. It left me a little disappointed and wanting more . . .

Bit slow , could have been better paced , great performances but the script has gaps where there is no dialogue. I think that is an Australian mistake because this does happen a lot in Australian drama . Underbelly bits put together to make this film. Barely disguised! 3 stars

Has to be the most over rated australian movie ever! It was OK, but I was expecting much more. It seemed like it didn't go into enough detail at times, although the movie was fairly long. Some good acting performances, but overall disappointing.

Crime family feels the heat of the police and spirals out of control. Better than average example of this genre which doesn't quite achieve the level of tension I would have hoped. I think this is largely due to the uninspired performance of Ben Mendelsohn who can't compete with David Wenham's menacing performance in a similar themed The Boys. 3.5 stars

To say this one of the best Australian films I have seen would be understating it somewhat. I am simply stunned by its power, its ability to tell a story about characters that are so believeable they could be your neighbours. Ben Mendelsohn's Pope is about the most chilling, evil, pathological character I have seen since David Wenham's character in 'The Boys'. I cannot believe Jackie Weaver as Smurf- she could play any character and make the audience completely believe her. Certainly the subject matter is 'unsavoury' and not very nice, but the quality of this film should be shouted all over the world. Absolutely brilliant!!!
