What really happened in 1974 in a house in Amityville, Long Island may be open for discussion. There is no doubt, however, that the supposedly true story, as told by Jay Anson in his bestselling book, remains fascinating for anyone remotely interested in the paranormal or, simply, a good haunted house yarn. From the book came a movie in 1979, followed by a “prequel” three years later, a third film that added 3-D to the thrills in 1983 and five TV movies with the word “Amityville” in their titles but little else that bore any resemblance to the original story.

In 2005’s The Amityville Horror, we return to the haunting that bred all those imitators.

When George and Kathy Lutz (Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George) and their three kids move into what they believe will be their dream home, they are unprepared for the nightmare that will follow. A year earlier, the house had become the scene of a gruesome crime during which a young man slaughtered his parents and four siblings while they slept. The man confessed to the crime, claiming that “voices” in the house had driven him to the murders.

Shortly after the Lutz family moves in, bizarre and inexplicable events begin to occur when terrifying visions and haunting voices confront them. It seems that something evil still lurks within the house…

They really missed the mark with this remake. The original (although clearly untrue) tale of The Amityville Horror was fascinating and the original film from 1979 did a good job at recreating it for the big screen despite it not being perfect, but the creators of this remake have no idea what the purpose of the original film was outside of scaring the audience. There's no attempt at recreating that infamous haunted house story and within no time it just descends into your typical Hollywood horror territory. There's nothing here that you won't find in any other Hollywood ghost movie. Watch the original, skip this.

This remake is infamous in regards to the real Geroge Lutz who tried to sue the makers of the film for showing him in a bad light and also trying to discredit his true life story. A family moves into the haunted house and strange things happpen. Since the original was very average it wouldnt had taken much to better it but thou the acting is good and the effects are def the star of the film with slightly more blood and gore then the original and some nifty house effects the direction conetrates more on the husband than the more interesting events in the house. Even then pig is replaced with a pasty faced girl and many events are even more ignored but as a different vision on how the director seen the story (esp. since the lawyer was a piece of work and no doubt paid people to say it was a hoax and nobody really knows the truth and never will) its a good but great remake and theres far better. But the ending is fairly lively.

Great acting by cast and especially Melissa George. Good movie. Not gory and not too scary - more like a thriller than horror.

Wasn't hard for the remake to be better than the original, which is not to say this is great work. The lead males decent into madness was reminiscent of the shining which was annoying. Either tell the Amityville story or a composite of every haunted house tale ever told just don't name it after the former.

This movie always scared me as a kid and the remake kept me on the edge of my seat, making me jump at the least suspecting times. More of a thriller than a blood and gore movie this movie is one not to be missed.

This is a remake in the true words, if you have seen the original (and who hasn't) this is a carbon copy of the original. The only changes come right at the end and they are only minimal, so is it worth watching if you have seen the original? maybe but dont expect anything really to grab you and blow you away.

Fantastic movie that scared not through blood and gore but pyschologically. The fact that it was based on a true stroy also added to the fright.

Ryan Reynold's yummy body seems to be the star of this show - given the many gratuitously topless scenes. But its a fun remake with all the classic horrors thrown in - priests being attacked by flies, the eery boathouse etc. The true story has been thoroughly discredited of course!

This movie delvers the scares. It has got a better casting than the original and stars Alanis Morrisettes new partner Ryan Reynolds as George. Kathy is played by our own Melissa George, remember Angel from Home And Away? Well here she is in her first major American role.
