American Gangster (2008)

I really enjoyed this movie based on a true story.

A love and cold war spy story. Good acting. Filmed in black and white consistent with the era of the story--Berlin, 1940's, just after World War 2, a city occupied by four powers, bombed out building everywhere. The story and cinematography are inspired by the classic 5 star movie Casablanca, but it is a weak in comparison.

a brilliant script and actors focused at the same time of the vietnam conflict with the drug trade was in full swing even for the troops and the dodgey cops

I enjoyed this movie, Denzel Washington seems to excel in any movie he plays in. Great movie

Thoroughly engaging. Denzel Washington is totally believable as the apprentice turned master gangster. Russell Crowe puts in another good turn as the cop determined to do the hard yards to bring down the bad guy. The supporting cast is excellent as well. Highly recommended.

I have mixed feelings about this film. I was interested because it was a true story. I always find Denzel very charismatic and Russel Crowe extremely adept at adapting to his characters. However, there was something irritating about this film. Maybe it was the mood that was created, I'm not sure, couldn't quite put my finger on it, because it didn't feel like a true story, it felt like Hollywood, I know that's a strange thing to say, maybe it was the way the gory and sleazy bits were portrayed. Get it out anyway, its very entertaining even though in reality its an idictment of our society and its values.

I was not disappointed with American Gangster Denzel Washington was great it was a surprise to see him play the bad guy but as always did it well and Russell Crowe as his nemesis was wonderful, I no people may say that the violence might have been to much but that what it's like I lived in that time and when that underbelly was going on if they had just lived the life as normal and not splashed the money around then the cops would have left alone it just goes to show you if you take up a life of crime they will get you.

Compelling. While this film is violent in parts, Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe play their respective parts brilliantly. Washington, in particular, maps the unravelling of this character perfectly. A long movie, but one of the better offerings out there.

This is a great movie. The fact that it is a true story just blows your mind. Russell Crowe does a great job as Richie Roberts. Denzel Washington portrays the drug baron very well. Great casting. Keeps you enthralled throughout the entire time. Well worth watching.

Gangster movies are fun because I am not a gangster and don't know any gangsters. This is one of those movies.

Superb. Crowe just keeps getting better. Washington is a bit too likeable a mass murderer, but it is Ridley Scott's movie, and I cannot remember his last dog, or if he ever has done one.

Absolutly fabulous. Denzel Washington is a brilliant actor followed by an excellent true story. couldn't walk away from tv screen.

Everything about it was fantastic. Just when you think Denzel has hit his peak he pulls out another corker.

A great story, well told. Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington are brilliant as usual. Definitely worth a look - this one kept my interest from beginning to end.

This is a movie based on a true story where one honest cop's hard work and persistence led to the downfall of a powerful narcotics importer and the arrest of many corrupt police officers. I chose the option of watching the unrated extended version so I can't review the theatrical version. This movie does have blood but not overly. It is a good movie which I recommend. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, two brilliant actors teamed up, proving once again that their acting skills is no overnight show boat express.

There was so much time spent on character development, the plot trudged along at a snail's pace and made the whole thing a bit 'ho-hum' for me. You certainly ended up knowing the influences that drove almost every major character in the film, but the small snippets of adrenalin were spread pretty thin during the 2.5 hours waiting for it all to play out. It was one of those movies that I don't regret seeing, but won't bother watching again.

Sensational. Great performances from Crowe and Washington but you wouldn't expect anything less.

How can those people call themselves cops when they outcast an honest cop for handing in money he found? They are no better than the crims. Glad to see all the bent ones got caught in the end. All up a well made and enjoyable film to watch.

great movie added to by the 70's era so well portrayed

A thoroughly satisfying movie. Convincing performances from Denzel Washington as the utterly competent drug lord and Russell Crowe as the solid, uncompromisingly honest cop. Both men are exceptionally good at what they do. The Washington character could win any number of entrepreneurial awards conducting a legitimate business. He corners the market on heroin by following a text book approach that would impress any MBA graduate. Sell a product that is better than your competitor’s at a fraction of the price. Crowe on the other hand is the text book honest cop. He gets into trouble with his colleagues for handing in a bag full of drug money (apparently the standard approach is to dish it out amongst your mates). A good story, well told and based on astonishing facts.

A gritty, realistic and thoroughly enjoyable film.

Denziel outshines our Russel here..a movie that shows crime can pay and the cops are bad too....a believable and fast action movie..can't wait for more of the same.
