Depicting American suburbia quite accurately (men collecting guns; teenage girls collecting money for plastic surgery, real estate agents projecting success in order to be successful, etc.) but also with a touch of surrealism (several red rose petals fantasies/scenes) ...I liked both the script and the cinematography and most actors delivered very well. Will be interesting to see more films by the same director...Worth viewing, for sure!

If you thought your family was mixed up, this movie will make you think again. Just a bunch of very weird people. Don't bother, there is no intertainment value.

Weird movie but I enjoyed the typical suburban meltdows and hard-to-watch scenes. The ending you would never suspect. Good acting throughout.

A very good movie, that makes you think.... It said it was a comedy, but i did not find anyting funny. If anything it makes you sad, and makes you think of your own life..... Excellent acting and all of us can identify with the individual characters - especially the 'mid-life crisis' male and females out there. Definitly a must see, and a listen to the narrative at theend....

Definitely worth watching. Acting is solid if not outstanding. Storyline is defintiely thought provoking. Has its share of tragi-comedy moments.

A very well acted, written and produced movie. This is a dark look at a family, how they relate to each other and how the dad wants to change. Definitely not a "happy" movie for everyone to watch.

I hated this movie soooo much. I don't know why it was such a success, other than over-the-top marketing which made it seem like it was good (...just like Moulin Rouge). Sick story line and dribble.

The American dream crumbles before your very eyes in this rare observant flick which has a cast to die for (Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Mena Suvari, and Chris Cooper for starters)..........Spacey, a regular suburban guy in advertising changes his whole life view when events unravel in his family over a short span of time, proving ultimately liberating, but paying with his life.......

After a slow start we persevered - finding that the subject matter, whilst incomprehensible to us,was intriguing and fascinating in a strange sort of way. The unbelievable destructiveness of the relationships was both poignant and yet compelling at the same time. As the film progressed we hoped it could come good because there was cause for hope amid the pathos in that family. The ending provoked much discussion afterwards.

Stunning and original. Casting is perfect and no weak links in this amazing film. Director's commentary shows that the ego of Sam Mendes is out of control and he is his own biggest fan - my pity goes out to his wife Kate Winslet.

This is one of the few movies I would give the full 5 stars. I am not sure what else I can say other than it is truly amazing, and truly beautiful. And I could watch it again right now! It was a little unusual I suppose, perhaps it is aimed at people who have seen both the ups and downs of life.

Gripping, engrossing, surprising, this film makes demands of viewers. It plays with you, frame by frame, till you are mesmerised into a total cooperation with the inevitability of the story. Great art. It works on the big screen - I hope it is just as effective on the small screen. In one well-known scene, the film succeeds in keeping audience attention on a meditative sequence as a plastic bag wafts in the breeze. Ah, life.

Very average. Some great lines but unlikeable characters and a stupid ending (I will not ruin it by explaining why) which allows film to avoid ramifications of how other characters would have to deal with the behaviour raised.

A simply brilliant movie, kindly and poignantly poking a finger at our plastic, consumer-laden society, applicable to any suburbia not just American suburbia Amidst all of this a group of everyday but complex individuals try and make sense of a world of changing boundaries and values. This movie has every emotion, joy, boredom, anger, lust, sadness, greed, jealousy, fear, sensuality, hope, dry wit, overladen with a grander theme of the meaning of life It has unsurpassed social relevancy, humour, drama, sensitivity unusual in many modern movies, love and passion, beauty and finally a sense of holistic story telling capped with a much unexpected, tumultuous ending, still leaving the viewer hopeful, with a realisation that striving for one’s beliefs and the meaning of life are universal and integral to a fulfilling life A rich and rewarding movie exprience, highly recommmended!

I'm a huge fan of Kevin Spacey and am yet to see a movie of his that I don't like. The girls are both very good and it's great to see Annette Benning in a well written role again. Fantastic script and very well directed. Worth the awards that it won.

I am a great fan of Alan Ball (the writer) but this was still a hard film to watch. None of the characters are loveable, all are significantly and unpleasantly flawed with the possible exception of the most unlovely of the lot. I persevered because the cast was such a stand out and I must admit it did get better, but it took a long time. Everyone's "case" was put pretty well, so even though I didnt connect with any of them I couldnt write any of the charcters off.

I just found it depressing - I'm a Kevin Spacey fan and he was the only reason I continued to watch till the end. His performance probably made it worthwhile for me, but if you don't like him, don't bother.

Not too mcuh beauty about this strange movie (maybe not at the time it was made) centred around the 3 household members, they were all "different" as well as their neighbours. You had to sit through it to see what happened (or to see if if got better).

The movie is great. It makes you think. It encourages you to think about change, about not accepting the drone of life and about seeing the things we ignore everyday, the "beautiful" things. Funny, honest, loved it!

An intensely human look at American family life. Kevin Spacey makes it look so easy, which is the real art, isn't it?
